This is another example of China Disneyfying its minority ethnic groups for (mostly domestic) tourism consumption. They want to maintain the traditional appearance/feel of the village but as living standards rise, the villagers would prefer a more modern life. This is one of the concessions. (I've visited several other nearby groups in Yunnan, like the Dai, as well as Hui up in Inner Mongolia... the way they package & commodify difference can be unsettling.)
What bothers me is the large and consistent amount of "Most efficient machining from Glorious China" videos. We dont have any reporting from that country but they sure have a solid bureau making sure we only see select parts of it.
One wonders how the original village managed to survive unburned for 400 years. I strongly suspect the answer is "by constantly rebuilding those darn hyper-flammable huts that burned down twice a year"
They moved from slash and burn agriculture to more modern practices according to the article. So my guess would be that by stopping the yearly burns, stuff built up and people got careless about fire.
I imagine those huts would have also gone up in flames due to cooking fires and heating-related accidents. Elderly people with dementia can do a lot of damage that way. In medieval times, there would have been little hope of extinguishing a single burning house of this type before the neighboring buildings caught fire too.
All those Ancient and beautiful traditional Japanese, Chinese, Korean, etc. Temples we always fawn over, are rebuild constantly. Real ship of Theseus situation going on. Doesn't take away from the beauty, just something worth noting when they say it's been around for hundreds of years.

Komodo dragons belong to the monitor family, so I guess there'd be a resemblance. But, I did ask imgur for 'water monitor', so I assumed that any pictures that came up that were reptiles would be them.
