Okay but can we backtrack for a second, because how is it that you folks over there have access to things like pepper spray and other personal defence tools, but I've yet to see a single ICE bastard getting utterly wrecked with the stuff when they've been harassing people in carparks and the like? Any armed defense against law enforcement can be met with lethal force here. Pepper spray an ICE agent and be prepared to see a blind ICE agent unloading his weapon into a crowd.

I am all for someone obtaining the means to protect themselves against a very real threat.
My only advice is to make sure no one in the vicinity is struggling and may be tempted by a... one-button goodbye, if you get what I mean. If it's absolutely needed, put it under lock and key for their sake.
Protecting yourself from a threat is important, but don't forget to check in with the people around you to make sure you are doing everything you can to prevent a tragedy.

I think it's about weighing the situation you're in. There are a lot of people who still want a gun (not every time you may need one is a split second life and death decision), but would risk not having access to it immediately in order to protect someone they care about who might be going through a rough time.

There are a lot of folks who only get a gun thinking about a time they would need immediate access to it, and they decide immediate access is more important than making sure a child or someone in pain doesn't also have immediate access to that gun.
Having a safe in your room you punch four numbers in is a pretty quick retrieval system. Some people do more to open their phones.

Pepper gel. Amazon sells it. Unlike pepper spray, gel has little to no fine mist cone, more of a straight line that only hits what/where you want to hit and travels further than spray. There are tradeoffs to all of them but pepper gel is the way to go IMO. Also, buy at least 2 and use 1 for practice somewhere safe--like your backyard at a tree leaf or whatever. If/when you have to use it for real, it should never come as a surprise to you exactly how it patterns or to what distance.

Even if we banned guns tomorrow and got an impossible 99% compliance rate overnight that would still leave roughly 10 million privately owned firearms in citizen hands. Regardless of your feelings on private firearms, one undeniable fact remains: there's no putting the toothpaste back in the tube. Or at least not for many generations.

I have mine because I go out deep into the desert as a lone female. Then I added a shotgun for home defense because I live out in the middle of nowhere, in a giant county and only the county sheriff's would respond to a 911 call and I don't really have guard dogs, I have my babies, I'll defend them to the death (they are 4 big dogs, but they're not here for me, I'm here for them). When the hubby first moved in with me I immediately taught him about my pistol & took him to the range.
