I remember when he placed tariffs on metals coming in from Mexico. I was working at a Mexican American company that relied heavily on imported raw materials from Mexico and as soon as he said tariffs would be placed, even before they actually implemented anything, the very next day, we were talking about how the prices were going up that same day because of the announced tariffs. People just don't fucking learn anything ever.

I think they take everything he says with a grain of salt, which makes it possible for them to vote for him without agreeing with his policies... which is some kind of evil genius. Me personally, I'd say maybe the tariffs are meant to increase long-term movement of manufacturing back to the US. But I don't think Trump really cares about the long-term economy. He wants people to love him or hate his enemies right now.

I will never understand why people thought tariffs wouldn't just make products more expensive... Of course that's what they'll do. That's how they work. They make foreign products more expensive so you'll buy domestically manufactured ones. Which requires that you have domestic manufacturing to provide those products. Which we don't, for the most part.

You could have some sort of semantic argument that prices going up in a specific industry, without a knock on effect on the price index isn't inflation maybe? Exactly this was not the Dems fault. This was the fault of a largely ignorant (sometimes willfully) electorate. Harris mentioned the tariffs would out the cost on consumers, economists said so, they could spend less than 5 minutes looking up how tariffs work on Wikipedia. And even that ignores that again nobody should be voting for the openly authoritarian candidate for any reason. Cheap eggs and gas are not worth our democracy.
