Drinking is good for you, soon you are unconstrained

Drinking is good for you, here comes the womanizer

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Vodka from Ali Express

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How do they separate the methanol from the ethanol (as well as any phenols)? I didn't see any source of temperature regulation. Drinking that might be able to kill you. The whole "going blind by drinking bad moonshine" idea.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That was heavily overstated during Prohibition to scare people out of drinking illegal booze.
Less risky than raw steak, and it looks like they discarded foreshots anyway.
Most of those methanol poisoning cases were intentionally poisoned alcohol (thanks feds) or scammers who were fermenting sawdust.

Thanks Polish friends, great invention! Swedish Vodka is very smooth too.

blinded by the shite!

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s a lot of work for potato juice. I prefer mashed potatoes

1 year ago | Likes 204 Dislikes 6

Yeah those mashed potatoes looked way too good to not eat.

1 year ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

It's all downhill from there.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

ehhh... boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew.

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Was gonna say, stop half way through the first video, add garlic, butter, and chives and I’m sold

1 year ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 0

Same, even halfway through I'm like "Oh... well that's a LOT of water for mashed potatoes.. you could still turn it into a potato soup.. oh booze ok..." lol

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Also why peel the potatoes if they are going to be fermented? My grandmother never peeled the potatoes for vodka; only clean, cut, boil, and smash.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I made a version of this during lockdown (cos my country decided to ban alcohol sales) using the same techniques but sans the long fermentation process (used normal yeast to speed it up). Guys. It was Not Good. But it worked and I didn't die of alcohol poisoning! Yay me!

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have never seen someone hold the potato peeler like that. Has everyone I know been doing it wrong this whole time?

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Lot of people are taught to always cut away from yourself so might be that.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No: It's the lady in the video who's wrong.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's how I do it

I think she's just really bad at making mashed potatoes and the vodka was a happy accident.

1 year ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 4

I'm teetotal but this was highly interesting to me. Never knew how vodka (or Baijiu) was made.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Just gonna leave that info here. Most vodka are made with cereal, the whole potato vodka thing is mostly a myth in the modern world. Not saying it doesn't get made with potato just that the vast majority of vodka we've ever drink were cereal, corn syrup, maize even fruit based

My babcia made potato vodak for my grandfather in the '30's, US.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup not saying it doesn't happen, but it's really rare to buy a potato made vodka now these days

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1. Make mashed potato. 2. Don't eat the mashed potato. 3. You failed and ate the mashed potato.

1 year ago | Likes 101 Dislikes 1

MMmmmmmmmm mashed potato

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

this is where I fail every time

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

That is exactly my problem

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

3. Drink the mashed potatoes

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's my problem with making vodka - I reach a certain point, and the compulsion to make gravy becomes unbearable. The sausage-and-country vodka was good, though.

Potato quality

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

so...

step 1) have huuuge ass potatoes :D

step 2) mess up the mashed potatoes...

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

I'm wondering what it taste like if you use sweet potatoes

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Boil em, mash em, stick em in a brew

1 year ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

This kills the potato

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Ahhh! Drinking potato’s, my favourite!

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So vodka is mashed potatoes.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Always amazes me how people originally came up with these recipes. Lets grab some potatoes and make some alcohol.

I mean......just drink it straight from the bottle like a grownup. An alcoholic grownup.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Awww. This reminds me of my grandmother.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Needs more vodka.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Remember kids, homemade liquor can blind you. Better hand it over to me so I can keep you (*hic*) safe.

1 year ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 2

How to spoil perfectly made mashed potatoes.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

how is the efficiency of this distillation method versus a typical moonshine style copper still?

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Since there isn't a large pipe for the vapor to go through, you have to heat it up very slowly so it doesn't just escape into the air. A lot still escapes though. Another problem is that you can't really separate the fractions which will negatively impact the taste.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Can I used boxed mashed potato flakes?

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Probably. Those are just cooked and dried potatoes, no?

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The most important thing in this process is the amylase enzyme that turns starch into sugar.
Once you have sugar in solution, yeast will happily turn it into alcohol for you. If at that stage it's drinkable, just skip the distillation.
Source: homebrewed mead from apple juice & honey

Depends on whether they added any preservatives that might kill the yeast or interfere with the starch digesting enzyme. I'd give it good odds of working, but you'd have to try specific brands.
This is why you should run a test fermentation on any new ingredient.
Also, don't do this without a license in the US or the ATF will become deeply unpleasant.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What if I rehydrate the potato flakes with vodka?

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but you get Vodka powder.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Just add Vodka!

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That waste at the "bottling" stage...

1 year ago | Likes 126 Dislikes 4

Also a little worried that they poured the first container back into the other two. I would be worried about the methanol that is produced at the lower distillation temps being reintroduced.

1 year ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 2

I winced when I saw that. Gotta take off the heads and tails!

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Only one of those is for methanol. (Whichever is first, I'm not familiar with the terminology.) The other is just for taste.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It only takes a moment to search. You still want to be separating your distillation, not just mixing it all back together and hoping it doesn't taste awful or make you blind.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I come from a country where distilling your alcohol is very common. I know how we do it. I've never heard of anyone going blind, but I have tasted some truly awful stuff.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’m quite confident that they removed first few spoons. But even if methanol wasn’t removed it is harmful only if there is no much larger amount of ethanol. For example in a wine there is methanol in it, as in all fermented productions.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not sure if they did reintroduce it, they used the spiky one first, then took it out with just little in it. They did reuse it later but I imagine they threw that small bit at the beginning away.

1 year ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I had that concern too. How is that not an issue with this particular process?

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Very much, but you can buy cheap strips of paper-like thing that tells you when methanol stops, by color.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's almost like we shouldn't be taking distilling advice from the same people we shouldn't be taking medical, financial or psychological advice from.

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Random strangers on the internet? But if that's the case howd I get so good at python and astrophysics (I am not good at astrophysics)

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

You've had first distillation. What about second distillation?

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

In college I used to buy bottom shelf vodka and run it through a Brita filter to distill it further. Worked surprisingly well, and saved me a bunch of money

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Mythbusters actually tested that.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And?

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They found that the more the Vodka is filtered, the better it is.
