My favorite weather person will always be Tom Skilling from Chicago. You can see how excited he is about every aspect of his job and seeing him filled with such joy makes me happy
Voldborg was so fucking good! One of the most down to earth people on TV. He got sent so many sweaters and he wore a lot of them with great pride and joy.
If she tried to drag us anywhere, we could just roll over and have a tent peg sticking us into the ground at a moments notice. Though we know she's not lacking in back strength.
On his last day he showed up in a green shirt so we could see through him.
He mentioned he should have done it sooner so we could always see the little island Bornholm, which was always hidden behind him unless he moved to the other side of the screen.
Aye, hence my comment on Swabian dialect. Most people I met spoke Hoch Deutch, some people spoke only in their dialect, and I couldn't tell you why. And some switched depending on whom they were taking to, another German person, or me, a foreigner who only understood Hoch Deutch, at least at first.
There were always hints in their speech on where they come from if you have a good ear, which I do not.
Ok so.... as a Dutch person who grew up on Sendung met der Maus and Löwenzahn....... I think it's this: Ich möchte Sie hier als Muotataler Wetterprophet begrüssen. Und ich muss zugeben, letzten Sommer haben wir sechs „Muotataler Wetterpropheten“ einen schönen Sommer vorausgesagt, und das genaue Gegenteil ist eingetreten – es war ein verregneter Sommer...... So that would be: 1/2
I would like to greet you as the Muotataler weather prophet. And I have to admit, last summer we, the six weather prophets, predicteed a nice summer, but the exact opposite happened. It was a rainy summer. 2/2 Correct me if I got it wrong :P
Someone who lives in a thal. Eeehmmm in a... canyon? Dunno how to translate that. When you live in the mountains where are lower area's, they are called 'thal'. So that guy would be from the Muota canyon.
It's an extremely unlovely sounding language to my English language ear. No offense intended does it sound attractive to a native speaker? I assume it must, if it didn't where would that leave you?
As a German, I don't understand him at all, and it sound horrible to me. Generally speaking, how a language sounds has nothing to do with sounding attractive, it's a pretty bizarre expectation. You can make most languages sound pretty, though some are easier than others (case in point: French has a reputation for sounding romantic despite phonetically being an utter mess that sounds like drunkenly vomiting).
Are you high? Read what you wrote again and see if it makes sense. "And it sounded horrible to me" Followed by "how a language sounds has nothing to do with sounding attractive" I guess you think in German and write in English so that made sense? All I said was it sounds harsh to me. Spanish, Italian, Māori, Greek all sound like music to me. I could listen to people fighting in Italian and be content.🤌 🕊️🍻
We can have opinions on how pretty languages sound all we want, but they don't develop to be pretty. That's what I'm saying. So to expect a language to sound nice, and ask whether they think it sounds nice, is a bit nonsensical. Your question was, basically, "why would it sound like that when language is supposed to be beautiful" when no, phonetic inventory is not selected for prettiness. That's in no way in contradiction to my own preferences.
note: i dont understand a single word what he's saying but it has intense "i should understand this" vibes, impenetrable dialect instead of different language kinds
In Finland many of the tv weather presenters are actually trained meteorologists, so they have a master's degree in physics (specialized in meteorology).
Was going to say the same thing, but I'm kinda positive, that Pekka Pouta would wear short skirt if enough people asked for it. He has that stupid sence of humour in him
Personally I've lived half of my life in Porvoo and the other half in Helsinki, but I did actually study meteorology at university (minor subject, two years), and I know the weather matters a lot in some parts.
In many countries it's someone professional who does the work and a pretty face who goes on and reads the script. But I like it when it's the meteorologist who does it all.
I think it's the same on the USA but depends on place. My city's is I remember when I was a kid my small town got a real meteorologist with a degree instead of just a weatherman and it was a big deal.

Because traditionally they also are the people who make the weather predictions that are shown, based on various sources.

We do that in Norway as well. At least NRK does. Fuck if I care what TV2 does.

That may also be true of the Brit (at least). Just because she's pretty doesn't mean she isn't qualified (of any of them).

Interestingly one of the most best known, Pekka Pouta, took over 30 years to finally finish his studies in 2020 and graduate as a meteorologist.

Because in Finland, weather forecasts matter in a more serious manner. It might mean life or death.

Yeah. 9 months per year the weather try to kill you. And _can_ do that in minutes.

Yeah. I live here. Just 4-5 weeks when someone died to exposure.
