At that age, I'd have been likely to do the same whether I accidentally kicked the dog or the stuffed animal. Nearly 70 years later, I remember how distressed I felt when my mom replaced my slippers with new ones because I'd outgrown the old ones. I was afraid they'd think I abandoned them because they were bad.
I love that this kid was taught to love and respect their pet. I get so tired of seeing children yanking on tails and ears while parents just laugh until their kid gets bitten in retaliation.
I told my kid every time he teased our gentle Great Dane that he should never do anything to her he wouldn't do to his best friend. It took him a few weeks but he's like this kid now. if she's acting differently he'll go pet her to try and cheer her up lol.
My "niece" was warned repeatedly not to antagonize the dog (she was 7ish) and ultimately got bitten in the face. They made sure it wasn't serious but they didn't fuss or console her, she was bluntly informed that she brought it on herself and the dog would receive no punishment.
My "husband" is supposed to feed the dogs after dinner, and he left for a while ao I did it and when he came back i still kept track of it and found out he was failing to feed them at least once a week. He didn't even feel a need to apologize to the dogs or set an alarm for himself or do anything about it. After another week with two missed feedings, I demanded that it become my chore. Can't wait til he is gone.
If my cat bites my daughter, it’s a non-lethal bite and came after much antagonizing, and I tell her she deserved it. And we talk about what led up to the bite, including the warnings
Mine never got as far as yanking, we'd step in if it did, but when my daughter was just learning to walk she grabbed the cat's tail so the cat just walked away and she didn't let go so she got pulled over
My siblings and I all used the dog as a walker when we were learning to walk. He was fine with it, and would walk along with us as we clung to his fur. Then one day, my sister crawlsd up and pulled herself up to standing using his nuts. He barked, and turned around to snap, but didn't bite her at all. Just a quick "NO!" to the 'puppy'
I used to nanny for a family across the street from my parents. Our family dog Max liked to sleep in the corner of the sectional in the living room. Baby had just started walking while holding onto stuff, so was making his way from one end of the couch to the other. He got to sleeping Max & before anyone could stop him, he grabbed "little Max" with those razor-sharp baby claws. Max's eyes got really wide, but he just slowly got up & walked away. He got LOTS of treats!
