Whippany, NJ (named after the Lenape tribe of indigenous Native Americans who originally inhabited what is now the Whippany River valley in Morris County, New Jersey. Their name derives from the Lenape word Whippanong, which translates to "place of the willows" or "place of cattails" -- I can attest to the willows bit; we had a willow tree next to our house that grew so big that as a teen, I could climb that thing and see over the top of our bi-level house. )

There was a factory in my hometown that was part of the Phelps Dodge Corporation. They produced coated magnet wire for use in I thing the production of transformers. Whatever it was they used to coat the wire had a very odd, but distinctive odor. I can't even really describe it other that "hot chemicals". When it rained, that smell was pervasive. You could smell it for miles. I've never come across anything else like it.

A huge (50,000 employees) chemical plant on this side of the river, and a cellulose factory on the other in the 1960s. Luckily, we moved to the place with the cleanest air in the country around 1970 when said chemical company needed a place to manufacture dust-free stuff. The waste burning plant upwind (in a neighbouring country) was only built 4 years later, but their smoke plume usually missed our village until we moved house in the 1980s (yes, downwind of that waste burning plant...).
