I walked up my deck and put my hand on the railing once - and put my hand right on top of snake crawling up the same railing. Scared the fuck out of me
I think his shirt got nipped and he jumped back in fear. If he thought he'd been bitten, he'd probably be pulling up his sleeves to check and hollering to high heavens he'd been bit.
Just because they're not native, doesn't mean they aren't there. I found what looked like a black widow in a pack of bananas once. Wasn't taking any chances, it got squished quick.
They're hella chill on the ground. I 'stepped on' one thinking he was my garden hose (BIG boi) and damn near leaped this mortal coil in an adrenaline induced fear. He just kinda slowly slithered off into the arborvitae as content as could be.
The landscape, barn style, and snake species suggests further north than Florida, probably somewhere in the Midwest or Upper South (on either side of the Appalachian mountains).
One of these bastards got up into the metal porch roof we had at the first place we lived in Indiana. I come from Nevada, so when a snake decides to DROP ON MY HEAD I automatically assume bad fucking news. We got Diamondbacks and Mohaves out there, they will fuck you up. That was a fun introduction to places with actual wildlife, lemme tell you.
I had the opposite experience. Moved from a place with one species of venomous snake that was isolated to a small area (New Hampshire) to a place with 4 or 5 danger noodles that can show up in your backyard (Florida).
I bet a part of his cat brain was eager to see what would happen. He's like "I wouldn't do that, mate (but go ahead, knock yourself out for all I care)"
It's really dependent on the cat honestly. But there is a general universal language, like the hissing. But after you have alot of time with one cat, you can start to differentiate their meows for general meaning. I think my cat named my family because she approaches everyone with a different type of chirp. But it could just be like that was the noise that got someone's attention best.
Cats have some general rules of socialization. But they also adopt ways of communicating with their families. If my cat wanted in, it would be next to the door. If it's "meowing" like that, it's solely to get my attention... and if it's sitting on the deck, pointedly looking at something, and I don't pick up the hints... well maybe I'm just a bad hunter.
Cats are very social animals. In the two seconds of meow to snake, I highly doubt I'd register "hey there's danger ahead stop and turn around." Life happens

They are welcome in my back yard. Takes care of the moles.

I could work with snakes for 40 years and still reckon I'd treat them all as venomous, just in case I messed up.
WatchYourFuckingLanguage
That's a great mindset, but there aren't any venomous snakes where I live, so I'm all good in that department.

I certainly hope it wasn't a viper... The guy was bitten.

Black rat snek. They have baby teeth and no venom. They constrict their prey.

It's a black rat snake, so eastern North America.

Snakes are territorial dicks too, they got NO CHILL if you step into the land they have claimed. Cool creatures, but man do they need a Xanex.
RagtimeRaver
At least rattlesnakes can give you a warning ahead of time... sometimes.

For real. Cat sitting a safe distance away, looking at the snake, meows at the dude as he approaches. That’s what you get for ignoring a cat.

It was actually a "mEow" it totally changes everything.

It's the tone of the meow that makes all the difference.

I guess I don't speak that dialect of cat. Sounded more like "let me in" to me

Not to me- cat made no move forward and the tone of the meow faint and descending sells it

I mean, I would never describe myself as a cat whisperer
