Zoos have banked on this by giving various big cat cubs that have been dumped to tiger moms to raise them

This is VERY surprising because tigers, like all big cats except the freak lions, are solitary creatures. Still, the mothering instinct is strong in mammals.

BBC put up a video about it a few days ago, it's a good watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQFXaoT8QWo

I initially read the end of that as “aren’t biologically tigers” and I was very confused till I double checked.

That'll happen when a population gets critically endangered, survival of the individual's line means nothing if the species dies out. Also looked at from a slightly different angle, raising someone else's cubs increases the chances that the cubs you DO have won't wreck your bloodline by being forced to inbreed due to lack of other available lines.

Apparently when a male lion achieves dominance over a pride and has kicked the previous guy out he will then kill any cubs remaining in the pride. The females immediately go into heat and subsequently have more cubs by the more dominant male. This keeps the strongest genes intact and removes further competition down the line.

A lot of animals do this btw, including mountain gorillas when a new silverback takes over a group. Imagine being as emotionally intelligent as a human and smart enough to use simple tools and learn sign language, and then you have to get along with the guy who killed your children. What's worse, eventually it's mating season and your instincts take over, and he's the only male far and wide so nature takes its course even though you hate this individual with a burning passion. Nature is horrible

Doing a chronological read of the series now. Such a great character.

It could be caused by evolutionary pressure. Their numbers decreasing could cause something where they even start caring for orphans. I don't know, but anything is possible when survival is involved.

I always read that male tigers killing another's cubs was so the female would become more receptive to mating with them. So in this case, them being orphans, there is no incentive to do so.

It's also possible that this has just been normal and this is the first time we've decided to check on a large enough scale to observe it happening.

Us noticing something for the first time isnt' the same as that thing happening for the first time.

That would suggest that they are aware of the longevity of their species as a whole, outside of their own genes; which as I knew was a trait only humans displayed.

Outside of having empathy for someone unrelated, having knowledge of and concern for the continuation of your species.

Maybe, or it could be just that they raise the orphaned cubs because it makes finding decreased numbers of possible unrelated mates easier. Animals shouldn’t be assigned human intentions.

Kill they mean kill. But can't be bothered to say it because they are like soggy wet paper mentally and just can't say what they mean because killing is ... wrong....
