westellar
I can't help but notice the article highlights red states (notably excepting Texas and Florida) and explicitly notes rural americans will be hit the hardest by this. I don't support it, mind you, but it'd be hilarious if it primarily hurts republican voters.
rainbowsandunicorns575
Trump said that no one would have to vote ever again.
nero4ty2
My wife can’t renew her license for a real id because of her name change since she added a middle name, they won’t accept a passport issued this year with the change, documentation from the ssa or a marriage certificate. IL SOS literally won’t accept docs from the federal govt
rubypilgrim
Well this likely won't impact most far right white men, right? What's the problem? /s Time to re-establish the US government on the West Coast. This one is now invalid. They have discarded the Constitution.
thatiscomedygoldrightthere
So now we can stop saying 'let me see your paypahs ' and 've haff veys off makink you tok' in a ridiculous fake German accent. We can just do something American. Maybe Wisconsin? "Okee, den, lemme see yer peepers, guy."
soup71
Your neighbour to the north has simplified this process somewhat. Do you file a federal income tax return? Please check this box to register to vote. Cut the bullshit.
psmith00
given that passports seem to be most present in Democratic states i'd wager the Repugnicans will declare them NOT to be valid ID when it comes to voting.
viila
Returning to only white landowning men being able to vote, just like the Founders intended.

I still don't understand how to prove citizenship outside of a birth cert, which these fucks are already saying isn't enough. So how the hell? :/ I know it's always about cruelty and disenfranchisement, but like...god damn, man.
imperfectseven
I'm honestly curious what constitutes being a citizen now if birthright isn't a thing. Like, if you are the Nth generation in your family born in the US but N+1 was not then for what value of N will you be considered a citizen and why that value and not 1 fewer?
Subtilico
If everyone would go stand in line to fix all þis paperwork, it would shut down þe entire country for weeks at least. Like a national strike
pgaulrapp
If individuals could afford it, a national strike might actually work. It would have to drag on for a bit, though. How long were we shut down for Covid? Maybe a strike lasting twice that long would do it.
Subtilico
It will be difficult, with soo many people living paycheck to paycheck, that can't be a coincidence either.

as if i needed another reason to never change my name
oldguyexlurker
To those saying we have to fight to gain back the country in four years. THIS. IT'S NOT FOUR YEARS. IT'S PERMANENT. They've laid all the groundwork, overtaken the state legislatures, bought SCrOTUS outright, stacked the federal court system, ousted non-partisan election workers and officials through intimidation and replaced them with people who will gladly change the results to match their personal preference. Doing the same with the military. There is no non-violent way back.

White people get a free pass right? /s
OhIfIMust
“We’ll fix it so you’ll never have to vote again.
foreverinchains
*so you'll never get to vote again.
OhIfIMust
Exactly.
LuminoZero
Make it harder for people to vote and you will not like the alternatives they come up with.
evilspock
Requiring government issued ID, especially highly vetted IDs like a passport, is an old classist trick to exclude poor people and other "undesirables". The correct response is to go to the person suggesting it and punch them square in the teeth. BAM.
kittkatter
Exactly. Poll tax

Jarjarthejedi
So many awful things that we just assume are "normal" here in the USA would cause riots in France if they were even proposed jokingly. :/
psmith00
yeah, America really doesn't have a left. the closest they have is a just barely right of centre.
Bandlith
I can't afford to leave the country, why would I have a passport?
killbillsexwife
So purge them then make it impossible to be Re enrolled
The701
This kind of thing here is why some of my relatives really irritate me with their unyielding thinking of, "Well Republicans can't do THAT, that would require an amendment to the Constitution!" So then Republicans will find a workaround, exactly like this.
StarscreamAndHutch
Wasted effort. Theyre not going to let us vote again.

new crowdfunding initiative idea, the passport project, get a passport for everyone who wants one, for free
JustChargeYourDamnPhone
I’d be curious to see statistics around which portion of the population has a passport. Off hand I generally think of world travelers as more educated and liberal. This could easily backfire tremendously.
mthrndr01
About 30% last I'd heard.
420supercoolusername69
Cons didn’t want to federalize elections before… I wonder what’s changed…
pgaulrapp
What's changed is that they're in charge now, and they're sure as hell not going to waste every opportunity that affords them.
420supercoolusername69
Yes that was the subtext of the comment
TheMoonBnuuy
They're already refusing to issue passports to trans people. Also, I tried to obtain a copy of my birth certificate and was refused because the gender on it changed between the time I was born and now.
blue1987
Yep. This legislation attacks women and trans people pretty much directly.
DancingSwine
Do you think it could be a way to do a population census of trans people ?
SURPRISEscience
They don't have to go to that extreme. All of us that have gone through a legal name change had to re-register with the SSA and have a public court ordered name change. Thinking they won't use this to try and create a pop map of trans individuals would be ridiculous.
TheMoonBnuuy
Exactly. My name change is sealed by court order, like NOBODY can find out. I've been bullet proof on dead naming... but the SSA knows my original name.
Also SSA requires compulsory sterilization (gender reassignment/confirmation/whatever surgery) to change the sex, and if they only have access to more public facing information, all they have to do is have one of those AIs the billionaires love so much go through and flag everyone with a name incongruous with their gender marker.
TheMoonBnuuy
It won't catch the post ops but it will catch the preops and nonops which vastly outnumber the postops just because of expense and people choosing not to because of risks of complications and whatnot.
