No coolant is becoming standard in steels for better tool life. Carbide is more affected by constant thermal shock from hot to cold.
No coolant is the standard for HM carbide inserts. They last longer that way. For drill bits and HM mill bits you use coolant, partly to
flush the chips away from the cutting edges and partly because those bits need to be cooled.
Ravenbreaker
I punctured the back of my hand with an endmill like the one in #1. 10/10 don't recommend that.
When I was in the ER from having lacerated my hand cutting a bagel, the guy one bed/cubicle over had milled off the top of his thumb.

In my shop we use magnets to hold our parts so the chips stay stuck to the part if they aren't already blown away by an air hose
wouldn't the chips being stuck to the part kill tool life, recutting chips never bodes well in my shop.
We use compressed air to follow the tool to get rid of the chips for the most part
But we also use a hand air gun to help sometimes too, tool life is still pretty good

Do you use carbide?
Yes, but it doesnt matter. The mill isnt heavy/rigid enough to run big cutters at that speed without harmonics.
Well yeah that is the big issue, but if you're lucky a 4mm deep cut with an ø50 insert endmill 25% of the cutter width will work on anything
Oh, and a 45° cutter, they convert some of the cutting force to vertical so they can chatter way less and also give a great finish.
palemachinist
I agree. Machining is not all that pretty, especially if you use coolant.
Or machines from the previous century.
I work in a machine shop and this stuff is every day. Half million dollar machines and the latest CAM and cutters.
I have a 18x48" 1980 comet mill (bridgeport clone) and a 1992 amiak 17x40" amiak gearhead lathe. Net total is about $10,000 :P
High speed machining in aluminium looks just like this if you turn the coolant off.
Not on my mills it doesnt.
RadmanTheWise

And a half-million dollar CNC machine. And fresh carbides on a $2-3000 cutting head...
