Interesting, thank you. Follow up: is there a “performance” difference in black or white sclera? Is there an explanation for the difference? Does it have to do with animals being nocturnal? As in bats have black eyes, too. I can see the relevance for nv communication but that would be a result, not a reason.
I'm past my knowledge. I'm guessing there's a moderate nighttime camouflage benefit of the black sclera, and a significant benefit for social development of the white sclera. So random mutations with no direct eyesight benefit could still get a big selection bump.
