Them Crooked Vultures (2009 - ????)

If you liked this post, check out my new one: 5 Bands to Marinade the Brain:
http://imgur.com/gallery/zta7C

Members:
Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana)
John Paul Jones (Led fucking Zeppelin)
Josh Homme (Queens of the Stoneage)

I have no idea what we did as a collective species to deserve this band. They have the ball-busting awesome sound of a revamped prog-rock Led Zeppelin. Some of their songs can drone on a bit, as Josh Homme is on lead vocals... But, you take the good with the bad.

Sounds like: That feeling you get when you upgrade an app on your phone from a really old version, and the new app is kickass, user friendly, intuitive, and doesn't crash. I guess many of us don't know that feeling, though.

The Hollywood Vampires (1970-????)

Members-
(Oh boy here we go)

John Belushi
Marc Bolan (T. Rex)
Keith Emerson (ELP)
Keith Moon (The Who)
Ringo Starr (The Beatles)
John Lennon (The Beatles)
Joe Walsh (Everything)
Mickey Dolenz (The Monkees)
Alice Cooper
Johnny Depp
Joe Perry (Aerosmith)
Duff McKagan (GnR)
Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine)
Ke$ha (ew)
Zak Starkey (Ringo Starr's son)
Marilyn Manson
Paul McCartney (The Beatles)

Less of a "band" and more of a "club," every teenage and early-20's girl lost their fucking minds this year when they found out Johnny Depp started a band. Not quite accurate. Alice Cooper, Ringo Starr, and Keith Moon started the Hollywood Vampires Social Club in the 1970's as a drinking gang. The only requirement was to outdrink another member to get in. Some of these members were not permanent fixtures of the group, but the list of people who passed through is impressive.

Sounds like: That party you went to when you were too young to drink, but did so anyways. You're lying on the bathroom floor, and your buddy Jake is at the door yelling at you to let him in because he really has to piss. You crawl to the door, and pull yourself up, and walk down the hall, bracing against every wall. You walk outside and there's a fire. Two dudes are playing guitar and another has bongos. They are just fuckin' JAMMING. Maybe it's because you're drunk, but they might be the best band ever.

The Best (1990-1994)

Members-

Keith Emerson (ELP)
John Entwistle (The Who)
Joe Walsh (Everything)
Jeff Baxter (Steely Dan)
Simon Phillips (Toto)
Zak Starkey (Ringo Starr's son)

The star that burns the brightest, burns the shortest. The Best is fucking impossible to Google, because of their name. Seriously. Google "The Best Band" and tell me what you find. Far as I can tell, this group probably started in a smoke-filled room after Joe Walsh lost a drunken bet to Jeff Baxter.

Side note: Jeff Baxter left Steely Dan to be a missile defense consultant for the Pentagon. Not bad, huh?

Sounds like: A group of only-children, raised to be the best at their craft, but competing for the spotlight subtly, while a tone-deaf David Lee Roth struts around like a tarted-up peacock on ecstasy. All-in-all, pretty good.

The Travelling Wilburys (1988-1990)

Members:

Bob Dylan
George Harrison (The Beatles)
Tom Petty
Jeff Lynne (Electric Light Orchestra)
Roy Orbison

This band is basically just George Harrison dicking around with some of his best friends (without Eric Clapton). Basically, Georgie had made a lot of friends in high places by being with the world's biggest band. And when a member of the world's biggest band says "hey, wanna get together and record some stuff, see where it goes?" Step 1: STOP dancing like a little girl and get your shit together. Step 2: Get to that recording studio. Joe Walsh could not be reached for comment.

Sounds like: That stoner circle at your high school that used to bring guitars every day.

Cream (1966-1968)

Members

Eric Clapton
Ginger Baker
Jack Bruce

Eric was in the Yardbirds at the time, but felt a little put-off by the tight constraints of the band. Ginger was in another band, and was in the same boat. So, why not form a band, huh? Sometimes, shit is that simple. Even though Ginger and Jack fucking hated each other.

Sounds like: That black light rainbow poster in your parent's basement came to life, and wrapped you in it's weird felty-feeling warmth.

The Dead Weather (2009-????)

Members

Alison Mosshard (The Kills)
Jack White (The White Stripes)
Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stoneage)
Jack Lawrence (The Greenhornes)

Jack White can play drums. That's kinda the point of this band. It feels like Jack woke up and went "eh fuck it, imma drum today," and so he did. During a Raconteurs show, Jack lost his voice, and asked Alison to take over for a few songs. She did such a good job (according to Jack. Personally, I dislike her) that they talked about forming a band on the spot, with former Raconteurs members.

Sounds like: A kid-friendly version of NIN. Alternatively, a parallel-universe version of Smashing Pumpkins where Billy Corrigan was born as Billie Corrigan; a rich young white girl who's trying a little too hard to rebel against her totally oppressive parents. They're just trying their best, Billie. They love you.

Temple of the Dog (1990-1992)

Members-

Chris Cornell (Soundgarden)
Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam)
Mike McCready (Pearl Jam)
Jeff Ament (Mother Love Bone)

Scroll back up. Look at that picture. Can you just taste the Surge? Can you just feel the moonshoes? Are your tips frosting as we speak? The most 90's thing to ever happen was Temple of the Dog. Cornell was rooming with a dude from Mother Love Bone, and came home to find him OD'd on heroin. He started writing tribute music to his dead friend, only to find it was a little slower than Soundgarden stuff. So, he approached his dead friend's friends, and made a band. Death. Heavy stuff, man.

Sounds like: The way a record store smells.

Velvet Revolver (2002-2008)

Members-

Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots) (RIP)
Slash
Duff McKagan (GnR)
Dave Kushner (Wasted Youth)

Fuck you, Scott. Why did you have to die and prevent a Velvet Revolver reunion? This band formed when they did a collaboration at a memorial concert for a mutual friend and decided to keep playing. God dammit, Scott.

Sounds like: If Stone Temple Pilots had laid off the heroin, done a lot of coke, and stopped trying to relive the 90's.

Chickenfoot (2008-????)

Members-

Joe Satriani
Sammy Hagar
Chad Smith (Anchorman, Elf, Talladega Nights)
Michael Anthony (Van Halen)

What happens in Mexico... Doesn't always stay there. Sammy Hagar owns a town in Mexico called Cabo, where the rivers run with tequila, and the prostitutes have only curable STDs. So, Sammy, Mikey, and Chad were all drunk, and decided to drunk dial Joe. He showed up, they got drunk, and bam. Albums. Some day, they'll all sober up. Somebody will ask Joe to do a reunion show, and he'll say, "Chicken-what? That's a stupid name."

Sounds like: The last time you took your car to the mechanic and you heard that badass music playing in the shop, but couldn't quite place it. It must've been good, because the guy in front of your old Volvo is absolutely KILLING IT on the air guitar with that wrench.

Oysterhead (2000)

Unfortunate Members-

Les Claypool (Primus)
Stewart Copeland (The Police)
Trey Anastasio (Phish)

This... Is just terrible. Bad. I don't advocate listening to this. Even they couldn't stand it. They only did one album. Oh, God, it's terrible. They call it "funk metal." What the fuck does that even mean? Copeland is from the Police, for Christ's sake! He doesn't do Funk OR metal! If anyone has a time machine, go back and convince them to do something less harmful to their careers... Like heroin, or murder.

Sounds like: Dropping acid, watching reruns of 90's cartoons with nature sounds playing in the background at 1/2 speed. And for some reason, Stewart Copeland is there trip sitting you, trying to tell you it'll be alright. But it won't, man, it won't.

This post was upvote-worthy for any single one of the "sounds like" examples alone.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Aww, thank you

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Doesn't Chris Cornell bounce around so much because he's such a diva?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Buddy of mine met him in SoCal. Said he got drunk, vomited everywhere, and started fights.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Called him the second biggest asshole, next to John Mayer.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The Traveling Wilburys' origin story is even more interesting than the OP let on and it let to at least four hit albums "on the side"!

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Don't forget the sound of animals fighting.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Lol at Chad Smith's credits.

10 years ago | Likes 204 Dislikes 1

He has slightly more credibility than Penn Jillette (sp?) and about the same as Will Ferrell.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

I'm relevant!!!!

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Dude! My friend had a chickenfoot shirt in hs, and I always mentioned the will ferrell doppelganger

I chuckled as well.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Thanks, assclown.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Very clever I must say........ Bravo.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A Perfect Circle - though not included - is one of my favorite. Can't go wrong with a Tool/Ashes Divide/Smashing Pumpkins/Puscifier/NIN mix.

10 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 0

I agree with listing it, but listing Tool and Puscifier is really just saying Maynard and maybe one other person he likes that wasn't in APC

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

shit, meant not in Tool. why no edits, why damn you?!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the current Puscifer line up is quite the supergroup

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A Perfect Circle are incredible. Literally one of my favourite bands ever

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Right there with you!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The best suggestion of shit I forgot so far.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Love the Will Ferrel joke you put in there

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I was wondering who would catch that haha.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This is awesome, I've recently gotten into 80's/90's grunge and alternative. Any advice or band recommendations?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Listen to all of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Headphones.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

From what I've listened to of oyster head, I like. Velvet revolver on the other hand, is pretty darn boring

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Eh, different strokes.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

One hundred percent. I like offbeat (pun intended) music

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You forgot Asia

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Didn't forget. Everyone knows Asia, so thought I'd focus more on ones you may not know.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Chad Smith, anchorman, elf lol. Good one. He looks just like will tho

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

+1 for Them Crooked Vultures. I want a second album already...

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

We all do, man

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I actually like Oysterhead, and I suspect that most people who like Claypool will as well.

10 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 1

When all else has been done and said....

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Along comes mr. Oysterhead.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Are we absolutely certain that calling them shit isn't just like saying Primus sucks

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I recommend Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's very Primus

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Primus, except lighter and more mellow, save maybe for 'Shadow of a Man'.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

It's odd. Can't stand listening to Claypool a lot of the time, but love that he's making it happen. Keep Earth weird.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You're from Portland, aren't you? If so, wanna grab some Old Town Pizza?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not, just been a few times.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm like that with a lot of people.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You're probably good people.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

+10000 for Pigface mention!!!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What about Isles and Glaciers? Craig Owens (chiodos), Johnny Craig (dance Gavin dance, Emarosa) Vic Fuentes (Pierce the veil)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

No idea why you are being downvoted. It may not be for everyone but that is an amazing album and the 3 of their voices together is amazing.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean in a lot of ways, Led Zeppelin itself was a supergroup. That's even how they got their name. That would be my favorite of all time

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Damn, you just reminded me that Weiland died. I'm sad all over again and I've not even listened to any STP for a loooong time. Great work OP

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hey, man, thanks. I really appreciate that. This kinda took some time, so it's nice to be thanked. You rock.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

thank you for making me crack open youtube for a bit of an STP flashback :)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Reminder: check out Tiny Music (album). So far from their norm.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

TIL Penn Jillete was in a band called "What the Fuck."

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Really? I love Oysterhead and was psyched to see them on the list.I get it if they're not your taste but damn they're good. Also lol at Chad.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

IM GOING HONGRAYYYYYYYY

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

HE'S GOING HONGRAYYYYYYY

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oysterhead is actually quite complex, from a musical perspective. All of the rhythm sections are well thought out, and difficult to play.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I have no pretenses about that. I'm a drummer, and Copeland's technical proficiency blows me away. But talent doesn't always make good music

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As a musician you should understand that "good music" is completely based on one's individual taste. It's a relative ideal.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'm detecting some hostility. So I'm giving you an up vote and smiling. Have a better day, brother.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'll give you one too. My only point is don't bash a band that harshly, if you don't like it fine.. Just don't declare it's terrible.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

wu-tang yo. also pro era.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Amen, but this list is mostly rock.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What about Audioslave?

10 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 2

I was going to make this comment if it wasn't already here. See also: Brad

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Audioslave is the best

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Its RATM with Cornell as a lead Singer. Wouldn't call it a supergroup, even though I love their first album.

10 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

Hellyeah is Mia it seems

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I agree. I still play that album all the time.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

One of my all time favourite albums. Show me how to live, like a stone, I am the highway, so many classics!

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Like a stone live is awesome

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Velvet Revolver is basically Weiland and GNR tho.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What about Mad Season?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Lain and friends he met in Rehab. I was living about 3 blocks from where his body was found. Sad times. If you like McCready check out this

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*Layne. Dammit.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rur3k2DdDgM - Classic PJ solo.. Damn I miss Lain.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh yeah, I'm all about some "November Hotel". The 12+ minute version from their "Live at the Moore" album is insane.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Agreed. If you can, grab the original studio sessions when they were leaked as "Civilian". Cornell's voice wasn't as blown out or mixed.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You. I like you.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was living in Seattle and found it (napster), burned cd's to give to my friends at the bar. They called me hackerman and gifted beer.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cornell is an asshole though. My friend told the bassist from Soundgarden the band had broken up. Because she heard it on the radio, and he

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

stopped in to rent some videos at her store.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

TOTD is one of the my favorite albums. Matt Cameron of Soundgarden (and now Pearl Jam) was also in TOTD, I believe, and Jeff Ament is...

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Amen

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

...also one of the founding members of Pearl Jam.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fun fact: Traveling Wilburys had a song "Tweeter and the Monkey Man" which ended up being one of the biggest hits of Canadian rock legend(1)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Are you about to say Rush?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hugh Dillon when his band The Headstones covered it in '93. Now Dillon is arguably only known by US audiences as Nick from Left 4 Dead 2 (2)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My favorite Wilburys jam

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

SMILE EMPTY SOUL IS BADASS, I LOVE EM

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Velvet revolver kinda sucked. Then again I never cared much for STP.... so yeah biased...I'll leave...sorry...whatever

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

I didn't like STP either.. but Velvet Revolver was much better

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I feel the exact opposite.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To each, their own, brother.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

While not huge, Hellyeah is considered a supergroup. Combination of mudvayne, pantera, and nothingface

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That was actually my first thought

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oooh looking them up right now. Thank you.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A few good songs but I think all the original bands are better. Moth is a favorite of mine though.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fuck you and thank you you glorious magnificent son of a bitch.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You're welcome, you hatefilled wonderful fucker.
