#2 hits different when, after a quarter of a century, NOTHING makes her happy.

Man, the pearl clutching going on about the munchkins (I didn’t even clock that). These can be rescues. You’ll notice it’s an indoor-only cat. My takeaway is that people need to remember that cats need companionship. They aren’t solo creatures. But yeah, people on this site love a good soapbox. “I’ve been morally superior today. I can rest easy in having done my duty.”

I thought #5 and #6 were one image

Now that would be trippy.
Well OK, #6 is already trippy on its own, but like, trippier.

I will not thank anyone for munchkin cats. Ever. They are a bad mutation that should not be bred for.
Butterupmybuttcheeks
They did not promote them, nearly the kindness of treatment towards them, those are not the same, but it is telling about what kind of person you are in the rest of your life.
Autittuderp
Focusing on one thing that is negative and discounting all the other joyful things is definitely the way. /S

#3 Why is the hedgehog trying to finance a Mitsubishi?
cousteau
There used to be an ad for a car insurance company whose mascot was a hedgehog; maybe that's him.
Yeah, they went and put a hedgehog as the mascot for car-related stuff. :'(

I would love to watch that series again in chronological order without all the flashbacks.

What's the series? I just recognise that it's Milo Ventimiglia aka Jess from Gilmore Girls. 😄

#4 why Munchkins though?
heptadecagram
Yeah. I love this dump so much but downvoted because of munchkins. So unnecessarily cruel to popularize them as cute.
ChuckleVoodooist
I have a friend who rescues animals with breeding deformities. She gets them neutered then fosters until she can find them a good home. They already exist might as well still treat them with love and respect.
Sanivia
#4 downvoted for munchkin content
ToolmanTR
If he was specifically gotten from a breeder then i agree. However, if he was rescued and not gotten from a breeder then i disagree.
Sanivia
i agree with you, however spreading funny-cutey videos is making more people wanting them.

What's going on in #5?

Looks like a peaceful Japanese village in the valley between mist covered hills with hydrangeas in the foreground.
thatlamer
Just a foggy day in a remote (I assume japanese, based on the roofing and kei truck) mountain village.
bittenicht39
This is the village of Ainokura in the prefecture of Toyama, Japan. It is an UNESCO world heritage site and known for its gassho-zukuri houses with steep straw roofs.
It is an image of calm and quiet in this context, I think

#11 I'm convinced that people who have such pristine desks are psychopaths.

Mine looks like that. Like half a day every other year.

#7 Serious question, are fire alarms not a legal requirement in America? And I don't mean just strongly recommended, but actually required by law. Here in Australia all homes are legally required to have smoke alarms installed, & this rule has been in place for decades, so you'd struggle to find any home that doesn't have them. There's a bit more to the laws than that, but the general gist of it is if there's a fire in your home you're gonna know about it without having to be woken up by a pet.
QotU
It’s been a requirement in newly built homes for at least a couple of decades in the states I live in. And insurance companies incentivize them with discounts, especially 24/7 monitored systems.
ChuckleVoodooist
Not a requirement at all. It used to be that you could call the local fire department and they would set one up for you if you couldn't afford it. But that hasn't been a thing in a while. At least not in my neck of the woods.
QotU
As always, states are not a monolith and fire prone states absolutely have them built into the code.
thedarkdesert
Thanks for the info. That sounds absolutely crazy. I can't fathom just how many people must have died because of such lax building standards. Hope that situation improves for you one day soon.
terribleferalfox
The problem is that even in homes that have them, people don't bother to upkeep them. The idea of testing them and changing out their batteries (if they aren't hard wired into the home) is just too much work form some folks, I guess. I'd rather mildly inconvenienced by checking the stupid thing once every 3 months than suffer the consequences of not doing it.
thedarkdesert
For what it's worth, you can now get cheap, good quality smoke alarms that are either wired into mains power, with a battery backup for power outages, or for unwired ones they have a lithium-ion battery that lasts 10 years. They should also beep at you if the battery is low. So they don't require much upkeep, certainly not as much as what you're describing. Perhaps something to look into next time you need to buy a smoke alarm?
QotU
You mean yours doesn’t beep every five seconds at 3 in the morning to let you know the batteries are getting low? And make no mistake, it’s ALWAYS O Dark 30 when they demand that new battery.
thedarkdesert
There's actually a reason for this. The voltage in batteries can change slightly based on the ambient temperature, so if a battery is just borderline, then when the temperature drops overnight, then that will be enough to just push it over the threshold and trigger the low battery warning. Regretfully, this is usually 3am, because that's the coldest part of the night. At least batteries usually last a few years or so, so you shouldn't have to deal with this too often.
thedarkdesert
On a completely unrelated matter, the thing you refer to as "O Dark 30" is what is often referred to round here as "Fuck Off O'Clock". As far as I can tell they have the exact same meaning: middle of the night, when an acceptable response to any sleep interruptions is "fuck off". Since you taught me a new phrase I thought you might appreciate learning a new one too. Thank you for expanding my vocabulary. :)
QotU
I appreciate and will definitely use Fuck Off O’Clock. Very on brand for me.
