Most of the "nice" stuff people attribute to Jesus, like getting rid of Old Testament law, actually came from Paul decades after Jesus had died.
Paul was trying to recruit followers and the actual message of Jesus wasn't landing with people, so he outright lied about what Jesus said to convince them.
Jesus wasn't the role model people pretend he is. You can only get that idea taking a handful of cherry-picked verses out of context and ignoring almost everything else in the bible.

Had a neighbor of mine say that Kamala Harris was "too liberal", but he's a brown dude who is in the US on an H1-B and his wife barely speaks English. Their twins are in the same grade as my kid and THEY speak English fine, but their younger kid who isn't yet in pre-school has NOT been taught English in the home at all. Not sure what outcome they expect from this, but I've given up trying to explain how conservatives in the US have historically been white supremacists.

This neighbor isn't even hispanic, he's like from Bangladesh or something, I forget exactly (not India). Seemed like a nice enough guy and his kids in the same grade are friends with my kid, but to hear him speak like conservatives would have his back is ridiculous.

My parents, aunt and uncle, and most of their friends are from Sri Lanka, and it's the same with them too. Most of them have voted Republican since they first became citizens, and even all the blatantly racist and anti-immigrant BS the GQP's been doing hasn't made them change. I don't talk politics with them to keep the peace, though sometimes it's hard not to point out that their own party would love to deport them or worse if they could.

Bernie, of course, had been pushing for it his entire life. Even before it was 'necessary', it would still have been very beneficial to have had it earlier. But he was, even then, seen as too far to the left, and he had barely any supporters within the Democratic Party.
As time went on, and things kept going downhill, he's been looking less and less crazy, and more politicians have joined the fight for progressiveness. But the majority of the Party still sees their views as "too drastic", alas.
