They tore down the old 70s style with the parking on the front and side and put the cars out back. It's an Orlando SoDo thing. Main Street.

You can still find some that look like the originals.

There's one of these south of Portland, although the original restaurant with the arches is only used for parties and such.
PiffTheMagicDildo
Or, we just grew out of our child vision and cannot see the “kid version” of McDonald’s
jenniferlawrenceisabear
And they took out all the playplaces.
RedStarBeograd
coz most kids play with their smartphones.
Brand new one down the road from me has a play-place.
thats nice, there were 2 near me that had them and both remodeled and took them out. in the winter it was nice to take the kids there.
I think it comes down to state/local laws and how they handle injury claims. Risk might've outweighed the service.
LizardEnterprises
Yeah no, most of them do they just got smart about where they put them in. Space permitting, McDonalds near elementary schools, shopping
centers, and residential areas have them. Ones in college towns and office parks tend not to.

Is it just the depression, or is there just a lot less color in newer designs for everything? The world is turning gray and boring...

I think you're right. A new neighborhood was built near my house last year. Every house is dark grey, like all the joy has been sucked 1)

We had a retro (50s style) McDonald's in my hometown they recently remodeled. I now call it the McPrison.
Strangely, near me is an old version, the newer comb over version and nearby is a “new retro version” Realizing they have an identity crisis

Tbh I prefer the new look. Any super colorful food outlet with stupid mascots these days just looks cheap and dodgy af.

My McDonalds had a Douglas DC3 that you could go eat in. As a kid who had not yet flown, it was pretty sick!
armourman1
Partial marketing scheme, make the image grow with the consumer. As a kid - play place. As an adult or hipster - cafe....McCafe.
Watertowneer200
I think it's more like they realized that the parents were still gonna take the kids there regardless of what the building looked like.
Sheepdroid
That doesn't even make any sense.. you think McDonalds picked you and your generation to start doing this? What about the gen before you?

Correct. McDonalds is now trying to compete with the Starbucks of the world. Come to McDonalds and do you work or be with friends.

McD's has been around for a long time. Did they make any changes to grow with previous generations?
It was part of the baby boomer stage, that's why cars like stingrays have been remodeled from past years to appeal to that generation.
Baalzak
No, because previous generations just died of heart disease.

This type of marketing strategy started in the 90's.
Pokedmeinthecoconut
And it hasn't been working since the 90's because they made the burgers smaller and they changed how they cook the fries.
Macdonald's market cap grew significantly, so, it did work.
So they went 35 years without adapting to changing consumer tastes? Seems odd considering how different the 50s/60s/70s/80s were.
No, adapting to taste is not the same as branding, which is now a universal marketing strategy that began in the 90's.
