Far out, man.

I think the most interesting thing about these pictures isn't the clothes it's the hair. Clean, washed hair without 50 products on it. Not an extension in sight. I think sometimes it's easy to see capitalism, and sometimes it's not. Woman, and men, have been convinced they need 50 products to have healthy hair. This goes for skin and cosmetics to. Just look at that natural fuzz on Stevie Nicks in the picture. That's normal hair.
Feralkyn
Most of this hair very much has product in. A lot of it is starting to already pick up the 80s fluff fuzz of fucktons of hair spray. #7 and #8 are good examples lol. The long, middle part hair without much volume product is still gonna have smoothers and stuff (conditioners) but I do like the style a lot more too.

We had hope then.

I was born in 73. All I remember are clogs.

Halter tops were the best...until they ruined them by inventing bras to wear under them.
chichiFregiLover
there s weed somewhere on all those pics
eastend666
What a great time capsule.

Most people in the '70s were not this attractive...
Resistance1000
As if most people now look like today's fashion models.

I miss the era before plastic surgery, fillers, and botox (ubiquitous piercings and tattoos as well, but I know I'm alone on those). I liked it when people looked like themselves, not some idealized version of themselves. You're beautiful. Act like it.

#9 This photo looks like it was straight from the JP Penny catalog, or maybe Sears.

#2 I need to go to sleep because for a nanosecond there I thought this was the Obamas!
The gal’s face looks vaguely like Michelle and the fella’s body type read as Barack’s - then I finally got to the guy’s face and realized my hilarious mistake. It is definitely past my bedtime.

Most of these people are grandparents, if not great-grandparents by now
Cranbananarama
As was the style at the time.
whoopsidaz
I miss this.
RetrogradeLlama
Some of these, yes. Some would never have been seen outside a catalog.
rotodisc
I love it because it came back in the 90s and I loved it then, too. And I love that it’s kinda come back now, as well.
TheRicM
Fashion moves in approximately 20 year recurring cycles, because the next generation grows up and wants to wear what they saw growing up
hadan8088
I'm a 53 year old with 2 high schoolers and the thing I'm jealous of is that so much more is acceptable and cool. There are still cliques but lots of kids can create their styles with what they like wearing and move in and out of the groups. It's like they are their own real life youtube/TikTok channel. There are some that latch on and copy some kids but the smallest groups are the religious ones and the rich ones (venn diagram with 1/3 over lap)-the opposite of my experience in the early 90s. 1
hadan8088
I think it has to do with clothing choices and radio stations. We used to have so little choice that anyone outside the normal channels was weird but now everyone consumes their own stream and finds their own clothing stores/sites. We're small town but I like a big majority of my friends kids. We are in the band and powerlifting booster clubs and go to all the soccer games. We watch who our kids hang out with and I'm pretty positive on the future. 2
BorkSamson
More people are poor now than ever before. There was enough rich kids to form cliques back then. There isn't now. So its basically subsets of us poor people.
Rich people also usually put their kids in diff schools these days. Improvement IMO for regular people to not have to deal with their bullshit.

I was there. We were all skinny as fuck. I miss it.

Back when coffee and half a pack of cigs were a meal, and a bump upgraded that to a nice meal. No wonder everyone was skinny.

The food industry also hadn't leaned so hard into quietly putting HFCS and Aspartame into ALL the food yet to make it addictive. Oncr that started, the childhood obesity "epidemic" exploded.
lordofarda
They also hadn't quite yet engineered food to be as palatable and over proportion as it is now yet. Was starting but not quite to the crack levels of today that made it too tasty and addicting to stop buying and over eating.
Snooj
High Fructose Corn Syrup became a widespread ingredient in food around that time. One could argue it was single-handedly responsible for the change that led us to what you see today.
ThM1ck
Two things happened then- HFCS, and >aspartame<. The food industry has been quietly and often secretly putting aspartame in foods that don't need it- COW MILK is the most common one- since the early '80s. The biggest indicator something is afoot: Donald Rumsfeld (yes, that Donald Rumsfeld) was appointed to an advisory board for the FDA in spite of NOT being a doctor or scientist- he installed a puppet to be head of the FDA. That puppet lifted the block of Aspartame that had been in place -->
ThM1ck
Since 1975- he went full court press to rush it through the approval process *in less than a year*, and once it was done, almost immediately resigned and went to work for Burston-Marsteller... a public relations firm that had no real need for a Doctor. It is also the public relations firm for the corporation G.D. Searle, which just happens to be the company that owned the patent on Aspartame... and also the company whose CEO was Donald Rumsfeld. An IMMEDIATE spike in obesity occurred.
swofromtherock
Many have argued, and were called conspiracy theorist.
Snooj
By stupid people, maybe. It's a well documented fact, as is its highly negative effect on your metabolism.
swofromtherock
Yeah, and the reasons you know that, are people that were called conspiracy theorist.

Yeah and ethanol gas came from the same place of trying to prop up corn farmers. Should have told them to plant soybeans and STFU
MentionSignificant
Corn and soybeans are both supercrops- corn has a photosynthesis pathway that's more efficient than most plants and almost unknown otherwise, soybeans are capable of fixing nitrogen via bacterial nodules. I think the mistake is that we refused to change our diets to eat the abundance directly and they had to process or use them as livestock feed- I'm not aware of a single nutritionist opposed to eating tortillas or tofu directly.

I dig those jeans in #1 and demand four pair.
