Hell, Republicans overturned Roe. Trump even bragged about doing it. So what did the public do? Why, blame Democrats for "not codifying it", of course! Never mind that the Supreme Court could overturn any law they passed. People wanted to blame Democrats for something Republicans did, and nothing was going to change their minds.

What Trump (correctly) understood was the degree to which the world voters understand to be true and the world that is actually true are super duper far apart.
Traditionally, a senator would try to introduce a "tough on crime" bill then go say they are tough on crime. However, a senator really just needs to tweet about how tough on crime they are while saying how weak on crime everyone else is.

"tough on crime" is a misnomer and needs to be taken back. It refers to being punitive against those found guilty, and does little to actually be "tough" on any actual crime. It also is a dog whistle for blue collar crime, especially blue collar crime committed by minorities (i.e. brown/black) and never does a thing against white collar crime. To be truly tough on (bluecollar) crime would require we address the most common causes, and those would be poverty, poverty, and poverty.
