I had a border collie husky mix, who lasted 17.5 years before the arthritis was obviously more than she could handle and we made the call. She was a sinister mix of brute strength and intelligence, who learned to jump the fence from a neighbor’s dog. She was excellently behaved, aside from her younger years where she just wanted to roam. After about 2, she knew not to rush out the front door at a given opportunity, but jumping the fence was fair game until she was 6 or 7.
Huskies are great dogs, for the right people. Too many people hear "high energy" and think of a golden retriever or a labrador when they want to play fetch, and that's not right. You can get that, too, but it's more the fact that in order for me to have a "calm" husky, we walk a minimum of 10km per day, do multiple puzzles, have playtime, and he gets nearly-unlimited outside time with his brother. And he's still a bossy little shit, who will absolutely get himself in trouble sometimes.
Yeah they're working dogs. They were bred for cold and pulling sleds.. so you need to run that energy off somehow. If you really want a husky but can't walk them you can hire services for that. I've been thinking about doing that when I move. I've always wanted a husky and shiba inu. I know I don't walk enough for a husky but I'll have plenty of land soon and the ability to hire a walker if necessary. I'd have 4 dogs at that point so they might run each other out lol.
I had a coworker who had a theory that huskies are all the next reincarnation of Teenage girls who died and came back and I cant help but think she was on to something with that theory.
It's really just working energy. They were bred as sled dogs. So they love cold and love to run. Give them a way to run off energy and release some chewing tension and they're actually quite lazy cuddly dogs.
Mine was energetic from the day I rescued her til the day she got sick, which was like a 3 months ago. 5km runs 4 times a day up until 11 y/o, then around 3.5km per run for a year, until she got sick, now it's like 2-3 short walks.
I thought I'd done my research. I thought I'd gotten an understanding by dog-sitting a husky. My neighbours growing up had two that I spent a lot of time with. I was still not prepared for the first time my sweet, obedient, OH SO SMART little boy visibly heard me and decided, "No," when asked to do something he'd done perfectly before.
This same boy learned to open zippers by himself when we were camping and he decided he wanted to see what that weird noise was in the dark.
They all behave differently, but LOUD is a common trait among huskys. A pet is going to be a new member of your family. However you get your animal. do yourself and the animal a favor and meet them first. socialize with them. See if it feels right. Rescues can come with a lot of problems but the rescues I've had in my life have been the most loving animals I know.
I love dogs, had them all my life and I take training pretty seriously - I do a lot of bike riding and want to be able to take them off lead along footpaths and roads, so recall and obedience is critical - and I looked after a husky for two weeks once.
It was the most intelligent and most obnoxiously frustrating animal I've ever dealt with. I never hit animals but I came really, really close with this one. Think the worse behaved 6 year old you have ever seen on 4 legs and 3 cans of red bull.
It depends on the individual dog, just like any breed. Tend to be more hyper but, the clips on the interwebs of the crazy loud ones are actually atypical of most huskies. I've got numbers 270 and 271 of husky, malamute & mixes fosters in my home right now. Of those, I'd guess less than 10 were as loud and dramatic as these. Boy huskies are where it's at. Lazy and cuddly for the most part. White boy huskies we've had are the most chill. 1 of my 7 resident dogs...
This is my baby girl, half staffy. She gives so much side eye and is generally quiet till it comes to walk time then you get the back talk lol. Shes too smart for her own good.
Them being loud is just something they're prone to and then people train them to do it whether knowingly or not then make videos on it. Most huskies are like bursts of energy and then are really chill and cuddly. Just give them something to work off that physical and mental energy and you're fine.
