It's an unusual but valid adjective, Compared to the average civilian aircraft of the time (also dangerous but much more docile) the much higher powered, higher speed and more difficult to fly military aircraft were indeed "hazardous". It would be like comparing a Subaru Outback SUV to a McLaren F-1 Racer.

They did ferry planes with issues (damaged and/or malfunction). Also, when planes rolled off the line of the factory they weren’t always without defects.
The headline kinda sucks, but the article is pretty good.

Women weren't actually allowed in the air force/going to war. This headline is misleading; yes she "flew" the planes, technically, but they were only allowed to move and test them. No combat, no front lines, etc.

The Air transport auxiliary mainly transported planes. So I think the ammunition might have been omitted, to lower the weight, and thus extend the range of said airplanes.
