TV shows always exaggerated the income of the main characters. A bigger house/apartment makes it easier to shoot a scene. You never want to through out an episode idea simply because "But they can't afford that!"

My grandparents had 12. They lived in a house in downtown St. Louis, with two cars. Every kid that wanted to went to college. They were considered very poor. By the time I was born, they were living in a trailer, even though kids moved out and available funds went up.

What's really telling is that the writers meant to have him appear to the viewers as a "relatable loser". The viewers should be able to laugh at him for being a loser, but still at times relate to him because he was still "one of them". Working in a shoe store, with a stay at home wife, two kids, a car, a two story house with a basement and a garage, he somehow still fit that narrative *at the time*.

IIRC they only had that old Dodge. There were some episodes were a new or different car was introduced, but I think the plot of that season than always circled around how they then lost it again.

There's something called house rich, cash poor. My parents were like this, they were broke because everything went into getting and keeping a house. What was left was sunk on groceries and repairing their crappy old car.
Now on the other hand the characters rarely ever talked about costs for things like mortgage or upkeep of the house but they did often joke about car payments.

About 10 years ago my wife & I took a cruise which stopped in Puerto Rico. We took a tour to the aquarium, which was on the other side of the island. The homes we passed were either McMansions with a shitbox car out front, or tarpaper shacks with a pimped out ride parked in front. It all depends on what is important to you.

Just got back from St Maarten and it was like ... million dollar house, million dollar condo complex, shack with a bunch of chickens and goats, abandoned burned down shack, million dollar house, etc etc. I have pics of the goats and chickens from across the street where we stayed to prove it

$3.25 an hour is $9.37 today. Tell me what job that pays that much you can have a house, 2 cars, 2 kids with hobbies, save for them to go to school, and afford his own hobbies and interests. If I could do that at a $10 an hour job almost nothing about the job itself would be soul crushing. I'd be fucking dancing around the place all day.

Did the math. If he was buying it at 125K and on a 30 year loan that overall ended up nearly costing half again the sale price (187.5k) the monthly payments would suck up EVERY last penny of his paycheck. So yeah I am thinking bought way back. On a 30 year loan with the same would only be about a SIXTH of his $3.25 paycheck.
