Fun fact: the males can continue to mate despite not having a head or being chewed apart mid-copulation
TheShoggothOfMosquitoCreek
"It's not true, as many people think, that female praying mantids always devour their mates. Only a few of the 180 mantid species engage in this shocking practice, and not always under natural conditions." https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/evolution/library/01/6/l_016_05.html

If I was a praying mantis, I think that I'd be gay. It's not that I'm into mentis, but I'd get to keep my head this way. We'd worship each other's bodies, and after having sex; we wouldn't have to check our heads were still upon our necks. The only head that I would give would be the felatio kind, and while my lover wouldn't lose his head - I'd surely blow his mind.

And that's how Timmy became a vicious, sadistic, necrophiliac serial killer of females. Mother Nature is a cruel mistress.

It's interesting how in fiction ladybugs are portrayed as fun little critters, when in reality they are very prolific hunters of aphids and other soft-bodied insects harmful to plants, and thus important for human agriculture.

pay to see early comics...
IceWeaselX
That's a pretty normal business model in the webcomic industry. They can't do this for a living if there's no revenue, and people actively block ads because of how invasive the ad industry is.

artist's got to eat, and frankly this is the mildest form of freemium since you get to see all the content eventually
ArkoneAxon
"What? Man, that's so selfish and entitled! Artists should do everything for the EXPOSURE!" /s, obviously.
ByThePowerOfSCIENCE
nah, don't be self entitled - at least some lieks and hearts

#3 As a fellow mantis, the fact that the teacher didn't see this coming and head it off is a shocking display of unprofessionalism.
PicassoCT
Shouldnt have polished his head, totally tasking for it.
kirby422
Due to the sex-ed strip only having mantis', I was confused as to why the class was even asked that
xmaneds
fantastic use of the phrase "head it off"
mvuptmor992
Head it off? I hate that cliché

Maybe the top eats the bottom's head? Post sex death fight?

I think scientists later realized the females they studied were eating the males, b/c they were underfed in the lab. So, the male mounted them, and they treated their partner as a food supplement. Once they gave the females plenty to eat, they weren't eating the heads of the males as much.

Also stress, some think they stressed those mantises out so the female got the munchies
Alsoalso other insects will cannibalize their mate so the males will often bring food before mating to avoid dying after mating
draracos
Not exactly an insect, but some spiders also cannibalize their mates. Can't seem to recall exactly which ones though, it's been over a decade since I was into that topic... God I'm getting old...
Z0op
Black widow? Hence the name?
Zedrapazia
I've seen that breeders sometimes put a tiny little cone of shame on the female mantis so she can't even try and the male stud doesn't get damaged.
I can't put into words how hilarious I find that.
