The ‘pure’ religious belief of (mainly but not exclusively Christian) people living say 200 years ago when to believe in an all powerful deity was at the bottom of their whole existence has been diluted both by the ‘pollution’ of being surrounded by non-believers and those of other faiths and also by the continuing barrage of science explaining pretty much everything that, in the past, would have been caused by ‘God’. Christians are okay with absolutely anything that increases their power. Anything from the Bible that's embarrassing or inconvenient to Christians is an allegory, a metaphor, or is being taken out of context.
For example: Jesus told the Rich Man that if he wanted to go to heaven, he had to sell all his possessions and give the money to the poor. Christians today will tell you that those were specific instructions for that one rich man, and NOT specific instructions for all rich men.
