I go to Hopkins. Absolutely TOP NOTCH. They saved my dad - preemptively - from pancreatic cancer and my sis in law from breast cancer. I go there for neurology & research. The doctors, nurses, and staff are all SO good. Some speak 4 or 5 languages. Even the young researchers, who seem like babies out of college to me, are incredible people. I'm gonna donate my body to Hopkins when I croak.

My only complaint about the half time show was I wished they had subtitles in english because unfortunately my spanish is pretty poor. But then I wish they had subtitles in multiple languages in all half time show in general so all people watching could enjoy the lyrics. Other than that, I thought it was pretty good and I'm really happy that people from Puerto Rico got such an awesome show representing them.

Something like this actually happened in Alabama a while back, a big fight broke out over some racists jumping a ferry worker and they got sent to a hospital where most of the nurses were black lol.

#8 wow, TIL. Insane that there's multiple languages of sign language, a thing that was created not only after the invention of languages but after the discovery of strangers who speak their own languages. Why wasn't Sign Language like esperanto, a lingua franca for everyone to understand?

Because you can make a sign language intending it to be the one standard, but you can't force other countries to adopt it. Creating the language isn't the hard part.

Deaf people needed to communicate at the same time as hearing people did. Any time you get 3+ Deaf people living in close proximity, some kind of sign language will start to emerge.

(Posted too soon) Additionally, because there is no written form of sign language, it doesn't travel well. It's very common for regions to have distinct languages or dialects. For example, Martha's Vineyard has a large Deaf population and for a long time had a distinct dialect compared to other parts of the US.

Don't get me wrong, fuck Russia. But the Olympic rules are reallllllly strict. The head of the committee reached out and had multiple sit down meetings with the athlete in question to offer what mourning options comply with Olympic reqs. Like armbands or helmet after the official run. Guy refused everything. Slava ukraini for sure but there were opportunities to make the statement just not the exact way he wanted.

The olympics are always political. But this helmet wasnt, it was an athlete doing a memorial for his fellow athletes, its beyond fucked that they did this. Then again, the olympics have always sided with the bad guys and have always made bad guy plays, so i guess this is par for the course.

Um..largely banned due to Russian government encouraged large spread performance enhancing drugs over multiple Olympics. Athletes can complete, but not under Russian flag since its banned over cheating, not politics

They are not allowed to compete under the Russian flag. I think it is great that the athletes themselves are still allowed to compete though.
You've gotta remember the athletes are just people passionate about their sport, and don't necessarily support what is going on.

Sanctions vs. playing/ partaking in a sport are on quite different levels...
Obviously their government doesn't care about either. But, do you really think banning ~20 people from a sporting event they have probably spent their whole lives training and striving for is as hard a hit on the government as sanctions?
The main hit is the representation of the country, which as described above is in-fact banned.

Puerto Ricans, despite the rumors, are not immune to being deaf or hard of hearing. Each language and dialect of sign language is unique, similar to how English in Britain, ireland, Jamaica, South Africa, US, are different

Which isn't much of a switch, because if I'm remembering correctly, ASL already has Spanish syntax. So it'd simply be replacing the words rather than the delivery of the syntax.

There isn't one "sign language" just like there isn't just one spoken language. As others have noted, sign languages have developed in different ways in different places from different origins. Just think of "sign" as a modifier of "language" rather than part of a language's name.

It can, but sign language in different areas can (and do) use entirely different signs for certain ideas/meanings. It's functionally different words, and hence a different language.

Yep in sweden the sign word for Pancake is the same as the name for one of the swedish Counties.... you can guess why it have that name. I would not be supprised if the same sign means something completely different in Denmark.

The most bizarre thing I learned about sign language is that basically each country/ language has its own sign language...I just always felt like considering when sign language was developed someone could have thought to make it one language
