Source: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/paycheck-protection-program-small-business-missed-coronavirus-hot-spots/
I know small business owners who desperately needed the "Paycheck Protection Program" money and can't get it because there's none left.
Good, hardworking, honest, decent people and their families are on the verge of losing everything because scumbag vultures like Ruth's Chris, Potbelly and Shake Shack abused a system meant to help small businesses. Absolutely shameful.
Taxicat
Apparently they consider up to 500 employees as a “small” business.
TheFlyingB
I have two juice places and we did receive that stimulus money. I am using that money to keep our places open while losing money.
TheFlyingB
It’s for paying my employees and that is what I’m trying to do
Beleg7
Remember when Democrats were pushing for better oversight and it got called partisan bickering?
Beleg7
This isn’t a bot sides issue. Democrats aren’t great about this either, but they’re a lot better than Republicans.
mychangingtides
How you demonstrate your anger at a corporation taking money from small business is DO NOT eat at the substandard steakhouse. Buy local!
ChipWallace
Big problem with defining a small business as 500 employees or less...that's a hell of a spread. What about the mom and pop stores?
usersayswhat
Restaurants got an exception for 500 or less at a single location
wildpackoffamilydogs
SBO here. Yeah, could have used that money, but here's the break down: 2 companies with max 500 people to be considered small business; 1000
wildpackoffamilydogs
employees, right? 75% HAS to be spent on payroll over the following 8 weeks. So 20M x .75 / 1000= $1875 / week/ employee. Wait a minute...
wildpackoffamilydogs
That seems a bit high for what their employees are getting in general. Where's the rest going? Burn them!

Welcome to the real world. Where the rules are all made up, and the points don't matter.

Unless you are already rich. Then you get to make the new rules and bend the established ones to your favor.

Sorry but it’s not the real world. It’s A world resulting of very bad political choices.

Have you read any history?
CoeurFranc
I’m an historian.

No, we just gotta elect the right guy!
Mirkattisnotameercat
I genuinely wish that was true
donglover33
I think humanity has outgrown politics. I trust corporations to provide services more than the gov. We should have UBI, people vote with $s.
IAmFeatherWeightHearMeRoar23
Which is why people should take their hard earned money somewhere else.
GaySocialistLiberalMuslimCommieAtheist
That and have oversight like dems wanted but not only got blasted for, but then trump fired the oversight people.

My girlfriend and sister own a small business (6 people total)that was approved for this loan but they did not receive the funds...

Don't be mad at the corporations, be mad at the policies that make rubber stamping these requests possible.
Balarezok2
My friend you vastly underestimate how much rage I have to spread around. But I promise I’ll save the best for the politicians
millicentfrastley
Those corporations paid good money for those policies!
wiskyfan
I’m mad at Ruth’s Chris thank you very much
leroy666
Nah. Be mad at the corporations, too. Greed will always take advantage of stupidity. Look at your country’s government.

"It's fine to be an exploitative asshole as long as it's within the letter of the law" is in fact an attitude that's poisonous to society.

Trump fired the inspector general that was supposed to watch over the 2T, and said he himself (trump) would keep track of it.

The SBAs official definition of small business goes up to 1500 employees and $33M. Susan the stylist competes with them for that loan $$
NotMyUsualOnlineName
Meanwhile labor laws regarding pay define a small business as less than 50 employees or less than $1M.
millicentfrastley
The owners of Ruth’s Chris Steak House gave large campaign contributions to ... oh, you’ll just have to guess.

So trump... why did you take all that money and fire the dude that was gonna justify the use?
ChipWallace
By the time I was allowed to apply for the PPP they ran out of money...this is grade a bullshit!
simonripley
Allowed by who, your board? Your bank?
indrindri
Bank I’m sure. My parents own a small business, struggling to keep their 4 workers employed while not taking any pay themselves and they 1/
indrindri
Applied as soon as Wells Fargo allowed, and by the time Wells Fargo got to their application, they were out of stimulus money.
simonripley
That sucks, I'm sorry. You guys need a better bank. 1.6 million applications were successfully taken before the cutoff occurred.
ChipWallace
Wells Fargo here too...same scenario.

Assholes. We applied for our two small restaurant/bars and received nothing.

The US government works to protect the wealthy. this isn't new. It's also still terrible.
Awmph
more precisely: politicians work to protect their donors
wadatahmydamie
Democrats were criticized for trying to stop this.
Everyonesfavorite
I wish businesses forced to close got the funds before others that "may have been effected."
michelle412690
That is such crap. That's Trumps government for you.
IAmAnthonyStark
I’m not defending the companies that did this...but someone please make me feel better and tell me they are using it for paying their staff
IAmAnthonyStark
and not to continue taking advantage of the system. That said...can the money be taken back?
Thatknifeguy
They have to provide proof it was used to keep people employed, otherwise it will be treated as a loan and not a grant.
IAmAnthonyStark
True, but isn’t that only for a specific (and short) period of time, if I’m not mistaken? It still feels dirty.
Thatknifeguy
I'm not sure on the specifics, but I'm sure there's wiggle room to be dirty with it.
IAmAnthonyStark
I’mSure they will find away. Companies that take advantage always find a way to do so. Boo.
NotMyUsualOnlineName
Technically it's a loan that has to be paid back, unless they qualify for the loan forgiveness program. Which is basically "Use the money to
NotMyUsualOnlineName
pay your staff, and don't lay anybody off for four months."
askmeaboutmywienerr
While this is completely fucked, the small biz loan program isn’t fully developed and leaves a lot of uncertainty. Mainly that bizs won’t 1/

kidred2001
How about we stop talking about it and just do it? How do we get started?
zorock
First plan on how to avoid the police, then organize groups. Buy materials separately from different places, and assemble yourself.
kidred2001
Wouldn't it be best to just get the police on our side? They are more than likely just asfedup with this.
DarthGoodguy
Whether they know it or not, people usually join to police to support the status quo.
prrrrrt
They can only use the money if you keep your same level of staffing. If they fire everyone, they have to pay back the money.

I wish it mattered for this. Neither party cares. The democrats oversaw massive wealth giveaways like this during the 2008 recession.

spoodUdimo
Small business owner here: Unfortunately the United States government is incredibly anti-small business. Both parties lie. All. The. Time.
IDontKnowWhatToDoAnymoreAndImTired
Saying "both parties" perpetuates the kind of apathy that lets things like this happen. One side is flawed, the other is owned by big corps.
thepacguy
Same here. 90% of my biz is fall sales and I needed 10k to stay afloat. Got denied because they ran out of money.
ComeOnManYouHadOneJobToDo
Thank, You! Finally someone said. It’s not a one party or the other issue. Both parties are equally shady in doing business.
cybermage256
Wasn't that way in the early '90's under George the First. A lot of pro small biz rules changed since then.
EdwardHarley
That's why this "vote for the lesser of 2 evils" thing is nonsense. In the real world, there is very little difference between them.
ThePointIsMoo
There is more to the real world than this. And while they might be the same on some issues, on others the differences are stark.
SexualPeanut
Yeah, no
Brewchacho
Have you tried just spending a few million on lobbying? /s

Small biz owner here as well. Got rejected today via SBA for PPP loan. Only needed 30k but they ran out of money.

Brennanhasamangina
I had an issue getting mine as well. Have to file differently from now on I guess
schrodingersasymmetric12gauge
Even filing for the COVID stuff in the first place is beyond the capabilities of many small businesses.
Oteneo
not really true - very small business owner here- it was very easy and funded very quickly. those that missed out just waited too long.
Oteneo
but they're adding more money next week, what Ruth's Chris did was dirty but they're caught now and they'll pay for it in PR
GaySocialistLiberalMuslimCommieAtheist
Hahahahahaha, good joke. They SHOULD have been caught by people appointed to oversee the funds... but trump fired them.
Oteneo
i haven't really looked into that. im just trying too keep my business running.

You can only write in someone running. Sanders dropped out of the race

They can ignore them like always though a write in is a protest at best sadly
Pacaruru
They can and did, they call it 'first past the post voting'
DragothMP5
A write in is fine I the primary, but in November a Bernie write in is a vote for trump.

What about a 3rd party candidate vote? The sad part is I have not heard much 3rd party chatter at all this year.
IntentiomalTypo
Fucking unfortunately
hydrogenperoxide
A lot of Roosevelt's decisions ended up supporting the big players and crushing small business like the National Recovery Administration
hydrogenperoxide
He let big business set pricing across pretty much every industry. Crushed small businesses and eventually declared unconstitutional.
hydrogenperoxide
FDR also established red lining in the mortgage industry and returned refugees from the Soviet Union back to their certain deaths
hydrogenperoxide
He wasn't really the great savior everyone makes him out to be. He did some good stuff but lots of terrible shit too
Zujewski
I think they're talking about Theodore Roosevelt, not Franklin.
Baromian
That's the way I took it. But truth be told Taft was the more aggressive trust buster. We need another one two punch like them.
dylanamanhouilhan
People overstate this. Progressives at the time LOVED trusts and Roosevelt was generally very cooperative with them. He hated the Standard
hydrogenperoxide
Glad someone else on imgur knows basic US history
dylanamanhouilhan
Oil suit. Progressives wanted something closer to central planning which big trusts facilitated as they didnt need to wrangle thousands of
