I remember the last time I watched a movie on LaserDisc very well: It was 2004. I and a few others were at a coworker's house for a small (less than 10 people) Christmas party. He had a LaserDisc collection and had relatively recently managed to get his hands on a LaserDisc player, so we were watching Ben-Hur. We had paused the movie and were in the kitchen making more snacks when the kitchen TV reported about a tsunami that had hit several countries. We never got to finish Ben-Hur.

I know Blockbuster still means a lot to a lot of people, but I feel uncommonly close to it because I used to work second shift two doors down from one. Frequently I worked weekends. I rented SO MANY MOVIES from there and have so many fond memories. On slow nights I'd sometimes do two movies in one night.

There are two disc types, Constant Angular Velocity (CAV) and Constant Linear Velocity (CLV). You get an hour per side on CLV discs (like the one shown), but only 30 minutes on a side of a CAV format disc requiring you to do multiple disc flips/changes for a movie. CAV however allows frame-accurate pause, single frame step forward and back, and direct addressability to any frame on the disc. CAV discs were cool for animation as you could inspect the frames. Probably for porn too.

In explanation.... CAV laserdiscs had a quite limited time capacity on each side. Many films had a cute turtle graphic to indicate it was time to flip the disc. It was absolute luxury when we got a two sided player. Then again, no more built in bathroom break.

Those things seemed great, but those fuckers were so finicky. Anyone remember CD discman in the car before they included memory buffering (aka, ESP, "Electronic Shock Protection") ? They're like that. People walking in the same room can cause skips. Dust. Fingerprints. Humidity. Fluctuations in power that aren't visible to the naked eye that require a separate conditioner.

Around the same time that player was built I worked in the mastering lab making interactive training video discs that were sent to dealerships and other businesses. It was a pretty interesting process.

I'd rather have replaceable batteries, rechargeable AAs and AAAs are great. My last Samsung remote had to be charged by USB-C which is just kind of annoying. Also means if the battery ever stops working, the whole thing is just e-waste. Though it being a Samsung means the TV probably won't last anywhere near long enough for that to be an issue lmao.

There are USB rechargeable devices using regular rechargeable AA or AAA batteries - at least there used to be. The Logitech Performance MX was one of those. The newer generations use batteries you need tools to exchange but my MX Master 3 has been running for almost 5 years and I have yet to see decreased battery life between charges.

Money. It would cost them an extra ten cents more per unit to make things renewable, and they have a contract with Energizer to send out the remote with those batteries already in it so you subtly infer you have to use that brand every time. Ain’t capitalism grand?

Interestingly enough with wireless computer mice that setup (well just a USB-C cable) is pretty standard, there even are a few that offer "docks". Same for wireless headsets.

A laserdisc movie playing on the family 40” Mitsubishi tube tv looked better than modern 4k TVs in a way. Crisper or deeper or something I can’t explain.

Laserdisc resolution was about the same as S-VHS or super beta, a little over 400 lines. DVD pushed that to 480, the number of visible lines on an NTSC TV. A true 4K source, on a 4K TV, will look better than a laserdisc ever could. The problem is people watch a 4K stream and then complain about that compared to physical media. But physical media, it's always better than streaming.

Not always. There are plenty of films on BD, 4k UHD that are poorly mastered and look better streamed than on disc, eg. The Wandering Earth, Sisu 2, The Beekeeper,

Though even a 4k stream will be better than any SD feed. The OP is probably more seeing the wide difference between what is a high end CRT and an LCD TV. Which even the modern ones with thousands of dimming zones wont meet the black levels of CRT, Plasma or OLED. MicroLED will be interesting but afaik yields on those fabs is still kinda shit.

An LD will also look better on the CRT because it’s the correct resolution. SD content has honestly always looked kinda shit on an HD set due to attempts at upscale.

Oh yeah, it also doesn't help that the majority of people never calibrate their screen. They just use it as is out of the box. Makes a huge difference if you actually spend the time calibrating it with a calibration Blu-ray.
