#3 isn't about being pure, people don't realize how rare music used to be. The only way to have music was to hire a musician or make the music themselves. It's not like today where it's constantly available everywhere. So if you had some access to music then you enjoyed it.

#24 To be fair, modern paganism is COMPLETELY different than ancient paganism.

Modern witchcraft is pretty much "Let's go under the moonlight to grind some herbs and do feel-good magic after grabbing a cup of Starbucks". Ancient witchcraft is more like "Let's sacrifice some animals and human captive to make sure our barley crop is good this year, and hopefully stop the Romans from getting any closer"

#31 happened at my house once. I looked outside and our barn cat was cuddling a raccoon, opossum and skunk on top of the picnic table. They all just decided to take a nap together.

#25 be a Tom Bombadil: love doing things for the process and not the result and you'll be totally unphased by the opportunity to take a short cut

#2 IIRC, after the Russo-Japanese war ended in a humiliating defeat for the Russian Empire, Western political cartoons more frequently depicted a personified Russia as a Chinese stereotype. They "lost" their whiteness in the eyes of countries like the US and Great Britain. I don't think people thought of it in those terms, but it's essentially what happened.

#3 - It would appear that some people think dancing to a fiddle is a lost and impossibly exotic practice from the distant past.

2 weeks ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 1

Im gonna get that experience in a couple weeks! There's a really good bluegrass band called Never Come Down and they're coming back to my town! Incredible fiddle playing is imminent.

2 weeks ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I missed the word "it" in your sentence which gave it a remarkable air of doom.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I can't hear live music and NOT want to dance a little... Even the dude on the street corner with an overturned bucket and a harmonica

2 weeks ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Man I sure can. We got some buskers around here that have clearly trained much harder on the 'show' aspect of the performance than on the craft.

#4 Randall Skipcod or Skipfish

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Go with "skipfish". You've already got the comedy "k" in "skip", might as well add in a comedy "f". On the other hand, including the specific fish eaten has it's merits, comedically speaking.

The answer is no the story's name is the source of the word odyssey, and no Odysseus doesn't have anything to do with journeys. Here's why he is named that: "Since I have been angered (ὀδυσσάμενος odyssamenos) with many, both men and women, let the name of the child be Odysseus".

It's not a terrible summary of turn of the twentieth century white supremacist ideas on who qualified as "white" enough.

2 weeks ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 3

It's a work of ignorance and prejudice and pretends to be nothing else. It's not a "historicla views" map, it's just xenophobe shit.

#33 I love this picture with them both trying their best not to laugh, because you just know this is some classic Jonathan Frakes shenanigans that somehow got put into an episode.

Didn't Marina Sirtis insist on being part of this scene because, for once, it was Frakes getting objectified in revealing clothes instead of her

2 weeks ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

No idea, but more power to her if she did!

It doesn't have to be (though even then "adverb" would be more grammatically accurate), but you're right that that's how the responders are treating it.
