The difference between men and women is that, if given the choice between saving the life of an infant or catching a fly ball, a woman will automatically choose to save the infant, without even considering if there's a man on base.
I could guess, if it was a ball tossed by a player and not a foul ball she's doing something to indicate I want one. But I'm really reallllyyy reaching to make it make sense.
I think you nailed it. The ball is moving slow enough he's able to adjust his glove quite a bit to catch it so clearly the ball is not a hit ball but a thrown one.
I don't think that was the thought process, as dad preps to catch, you can see he straightens up which causes the kid to begin to fall back. The hands go up to catch herself and correct her balance on his shoulders.
Having spent many years carrying my kids around on my shoulders, I can assure you the eye area is just the place they grab to hold on. It's hand level, I suppose.

By the time the ball's that close you're already moving into position and it's too late to make corrections.

Interesting that she saw the projectile coming and tried to protect his face. Her spirit was in the right place, I think.

Protect face or holding on so she doesn't fall?
atrielienz
I dunno. It doesn't seem like she's scared of falling. He doesn't lean back or anything and neither does she.
PorneliusHubertII
It's a reflex, you don't usually think about correcting your balance but your body will try to correct you.
