Humans are so fucked in the head.
Miller16of16
This is pretty cool, but IDK how ethical - many editing methods are lot less precise than led to believe - probably riddled with unintended
IWasACatAllAlong
Id like to have some of those glow in the dark genes, please. I still haven't figured out how to read at night.
OliverKlozoff1269
Also check out green fluorescent protein axolotl. It was introduced in the laboratory, made it's way into pet trade. Source: I breed them
FailedCrate
Actual source on that? Not just a bullshit screenshot?!
Puddingslam
Im still considering feline eggs..

Printf debugging.

*Plasmids Intensify*
rdykgo
That's the most irl example of a debug.log to see if it works
biomechanic2010
Yeah we did this in my undergrad- you create antibodies witha little phosphorescent tail so you can see when they express
evilspyre
Would save tripping up on them on the stairs in the dark
FunInTheFLsun
Scientists should breed mosquitoes to do this. Imagine seeing a glowing swarm in your backyard
HeraldofOmega
Now I want a glow in the dark cat!
PfChaos
Probably more humane to use a glowy Gene as opposed to an antibiotic resistance marker.
Targe0
There are actually quite a few animals this has been done to.
Yayy
I saw this episode of Sherlock
ThrashKetchum
Finally, my dream of going to a rave with my cat can be realized!

I did this at school with e-coli. Was a prepackaged kit. This was also 15 fucking years ago. It also didn’t fucking work :(

Now I’m just picturing a glowing arm pawing under the bathroom door in the middle of the night. Or being awakened by a living night light
cattywumpus
Just their mucus membranes glow, not the fur. Glowing nose, eyes, lips and butthole.
BallDoctor
Why just mucus membranes? Looks to me they're fully transgenic for GFP, so it should be in all cells.
Jawsmine
Total guess, but probably because fur is dead cells, thus no active glow? Only mucous membranes are visable
Fur is protein, so no glow, correct. But it'll express in the skin, muscle, etc. Mucous membranes line your mouth, lungs, gut, etc. :)
So in places where the fur is thinner, I guess they'll glow too, but you'll still have a glowing butthole.
oddizee
I highly doubt they "glow in the dark". They're likely just UV reactive.
mrcatpoop
I would change every light in my house to have the brightest kitty around!
IThinkYouGotAFineBrainJack
Kept thinking I could never live without you by my side
HeavyBaryon
And so you're backFrom outer space
imhereforthefeetpics
Waiting on them human trials
Will never happen because you have to edit the genes in the egg and most places have laws against doing that to humans.
TheVegetable
I'll probably get downvoted for this but I honestly wish we'd just say fuck it and go ahead (with a reasonable amount of caution, of course)
Then you can be the one to look after all the children that come out with birth deformity's then.
I dunno, I think it would be better to have them grow up in an environment where they can be actively monitored by scientists
Then they will grow up with a lot of developmental issues. There are a lot of good reasons why we dont let those kinds of experiments happen
SharkShanker
Cat aids is a thing?
awesomecat42
It's known as feline AIDS, caused by FIV. They can live long happy lives in the right environments but it's best if they never get.
sendbobsandvageneiguess
Yep. Pretty sad
Arcygenical
You're really going to dislike when you hear about human AIDS.
OverMyDadBody
Fluorescent does not mean it glows in the dark, it means it glows in UV light (black light). Phosphorescent is the thing that glows in dark
vanelanjenkins
Came here to explain this as well.
TheyHatesUsCausTheyAintUs
Over my dead body it is!
TheYoungJaywalker
But after absorbing light they WILL glow in the dark
It's possible to make true glow-in-the-dark with something like luciferase, but that would require the injection of a substrate to start it.
or the biological capability for the animal to produce it themself
TheEditedOne
Phosphorescence is a type of fluorescence at least. It's just delayed fluorescence.
SiriLikeAlot
Almost, youre talking about luminescence.
RoTaLuMe

Phosphorescence is not a type of fluorescence, as it goes through a different quantum mechanical pathway to emission
I believe the route to phosphorescence is light gets absorbed into a bright state which then gets converted into a dark state and then back
after some delay, resulting in a re-emission of the light which is delayed, also known as delayed fluorescence. That's how it's used in my
line of work at least.
BlueStripedTwink

TheGoose95
I have a hard enough time sleeping as a cat owner. I don't need an apex predator night light.
lDanielHolm
*Pretty* sure a glow-in-the-dark cat is no longer an "apex predator" in any sense of the word.

HighImpactSexualViolence
He might not NEED it but we sure as hell WANT it.
TheRealJackieDaytona
You don't know what you need!
romicra88
Not much of an apex predator anymore when they're visible at night. Imagine its surprise when it thinks you can't see them in the dark.
ElMrMcNasty
Just imagine waking up to a glowing cat on you chest. "My bowl is empty human, where is my food?" Bowl is full, you just have to stir it.
WarKittyKat
Fun fact: they do that because their whiskers rub against the bowl when they eat from the edges. Try putting their food on a plate.

If you like this sort of shit, check out The Thought Emporium on youtube. He cured himself of lactose intolerance using genetic engineering.
hardytardigrade
That sounds extremely unlikely to be a permanent cure without side effects.
Infected himself with a virus that inserts coding for lactase into his genome. It's been working since he did it with no side effects.
I'm assuming that means no reported side effects for him, yet. That's not the same as no side effects from this treatment for anyone.
https://youtu.be/J3FcbFqSoQY
Yes, nothing from him. He makes it clear in his video that this is stupid and not FDA approved.
SidneyHarbor
That sounds extremely dangerous and risky, but then again I couldn't live without dairy so...I'm doing it if I get lactose intolerant.
For him it wasn't that he missed dairy, it's that he was so sensitive that any amount of lactose (often used as filler) would fuck him 1/2
up. He basically had to bake his own bread and pasta to get away from lactose. 2/2
