Okay, so this is actually a baby Mojave desert tortoise. His name is Nanook (like Nanook of the North) because he refused to go into his first hibernation. He liked the cold. Eventually he did hibernate, but not for several months after his brothers/sisters.
Here's the desert. Don't step on baby rattle snakes, watch out for scorpions, and remember that mice like to investigate fire because it's warm. If you didn't bring plenty of water, you made a mistake.
