This is the main reason why my Switch is a glorified $300 paperweight...

Nov 14, 2024 1:21 AM

As a big nintendo fan, I had to finally stop buying from after Breath of the Wild 2. While I love the games, they are VERY expensive and their "sales" are laughable.

I wanted to play some of the 3ds pokemon games and they're like $200

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The thing about Nintendo games though is if you buy preowned and then sell it after beating you can basically play all the games for free or even possibly make money

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

2011 was when the Wii was on whatever last legs it had left, and 3DS had just barely released. Wii U was still at least a year away. So what Wii or 3DS game from 2011 was listed for $50 but was $60 in 2022 on Switch that fits this context?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Context?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Nostalgia tax: paying premium prices for pixel memories because childhood doesn't come cheap, but neither do Nintendo games.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A year of its online service is a third the price of a year of PSN, and still gives a lot of free shit I can play. It's no Xbox game pass but the thousands of hours I've gotten out of it have been well worth it's online. But Nintendo's business practices often do suck and they are lawsuit-happy right now which is fucking lame.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The Nintendo brand games only go $20 less when they go on sale. Everything else goes dirt cheap if you wait long enough.

I've gotten to the point where I'm watching how much space I have left on my 2.5 TB card to add more games.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

$50 in Jan 2011 is equal to $71.67 in Oct 2024

The Switch can be modified to run backups of games you own

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is why I buy used carts ..

Today's $60 is only $15 in 2011 money...

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’ve picked up a few games on woot for $30-40. And you can buy used games for about that price if you buy on places like FB marketplace.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean, there’s a 3rd option you can go with til they stop overpricing things.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

So.... you're saying you have a Switch to sell?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Getting an emulator and downloading roms... Priceless

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You'll have to look harder now because Nintendo went after BOTH Yuzu and Ryujinx. So stupid. Emulation is legal, they're mad at the wrong people.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean, I don't have to look, I have a functioning emulator

Very few countries use dollar as their currency. You don't have to be a butthole.

Skyward Sword for the Wii can be had for about $20 now if your Wii’s disc drive still works. The Wii seems like it hasn’t hit its nostalgia wave yet.

Twilight Princess on the other hand…

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I bought physical copies of all my Switch games. Recently I've been spoiled with my Steam Deck and decided that I wanted to switch(lol) to digital on my Switch, so I don't have to constantly swap out carts for different games. Looking at the eShop, they still charge full price for Switch LAUNCH titles! It came out in 2017!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

OK, but by then $60 is only worth $49.50 (in 10yo money).

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've seen Pokemon (Soul Silver/Heart Gold, Platinum, White 2/Black 2) at $80 - $100.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I remember big games in Canada for super NES cost $120 after tax 25 years ago. That's how much Donkey Kong Country cost me. A whole cheque

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

You were buying SNES games in 1999?
The N64 came out in like 1996.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In 1999 i was graduating so no hahah it was a wild guess. it was probably more like 1994 or 5. I was working then at my first job. Started when I was 13 and I'm now 43. Remembering stuff like that is difficult but what I do remember was the price

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So did Donkey Kong Country 3 for the Super NES.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You can still buy used games. If they re-release games, that's not zero effort. Work goes into these. But we won't need to justify anything to anyone. If you don't like the pricing, some buy it... Which you don't. All good

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 7

Only if people bought cartridge. Download codes can't (to my knowledge, please correct me if I'm wrong) be resold

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Microsoft tried to make the codes able to be resold over a decade ago but their customers hated that.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The problem exists with used as well. It’s like $5 cheaper, max.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

That depends on games. 1st party Nintendo....$10-15 less often times. Other less popular, better prices. I got a used copy of Zelda BOTW for $40. $20 less than new

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’ve never seen that, but I believe you.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's crazy that 7 year old new Nintendo games still sell for full price. Does this happen with PlayStation and Xbox?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, but almost never.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've been with Nintendo my whole life and I support this. Why? Because this gives them a reason to create timeless games that people will still want to buy 10 years later instead of just following the latest trends and create a product that everybody forgot about after a decade.

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 5

I just end up never buying the games. $60 is a lot of money to gamble on something I may not enjoy. They have no refund policy either.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’ve never returned a Nintendo game

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 39

> Says something stupid.
> Adds "how stupid are you?"

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Right? It isn't like Nintendo actively hates their fan base and destroys fan works because they can instead of embracing their fans at all(this is dripping with thick, thick, viscous sarcasm)

2 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 4

For context, this was people responding with the same image.

Which is valid.

But it wasn't "people linked to their fav song on youtube and then nintendo took it down", like the pacing of the video makes it seem.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Oh is that why they shut down tournaments for 30 year old games no one cares about outside of the tournaments? What about the fanart they use a DMCA takedown request on?

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They sent a cease and desist to suicide girls because a member put in his user profile that he likes M*****d and Z***a. No pictures of the game, no music, no ROM. Just wrote the name of two game series. N"*****o said this is an unauthorized use of their trademarks, which they don't permit on sites that are not G rated.

(Trademarks censored as N******o has not authorized me to mention them, and Imgur is, if anything, worse than a porn site.)

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why? Do the workers who made the games not deserve money?

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 6

The workers, yes. The managers who exploit them and get rich by exploiting stupid customers, no. If you continue to pay mindlessly, you continue to support that, and that is bound to get worse (as seen countless times already, including the history that brought to this point itself).
It's damaging for everyone, to the benefit of a handful of greedy shitbags.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

So how is stealing the game helping? You're not helping the situation, you are just hurting the workers. Some people work on commission. Whether or not a game sells can determine if a worker keeps their job or if they get the next job.
Also, a game that plays on a Nintendo system isn't necessarily made by Nintendo. There are 3rd party developers that you would be hurting by stealing, not Nintendo

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Not buying (not stealing, that's another matter) helps regulate the market. Whether you like or not that 3rd parties suffer some consequences, that's in itself a consequence for adhering to a sick market that needs to be purged.
Apart from that, you chose all the wrong examples.
People who work on commission can find commissions from other companies.
Games that aren't made by N can play on other platforms.
Then there is the issue of many other platforms being sick as well, and dev companies too.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The person I replied to initially said steal. And how is Nintendo a sick market? Them shutting down uses of their IP that they don't agree with isn't wrong as it's their IP to do whatever they want with.
Not all games are available on all platforms (it costs money and time to make them work on different platforms).
People working on commission should get the money from people who play the game. Also you ignored the part that keeping or getting a new job is hard if your game doesn't sell

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So…screw the company out of money so that all of those managers get fired and they cannot make the next game. Smart. You must be an mba.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They don't get paid royalties, lol. They're already paid by the hour.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You know it can be both? You can be paid by the hour and then also get paid per sale or get bonuses if the game reaches certain sale levels

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, it could definitely be both, but it's really not the case currently. Those bonuses most likely just go towards the higher executives and not the game devs themselves.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The executives that greenlight the next game? Or do you not want any more games, genius?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You are acting like every game developer is part of some huge company. That's not true at all

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The workers were already paid

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 4

Whether or not a game sells can determine if a worker gets to keep their job or if they get another job. Also some people work on commission. Stop pretending that workers don't get hurt

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

All of them? What about indie game developers?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I didn't know there were indie game developers for the Switch. Thought that was all done by big Nintendo

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Not all games on the Switch are made by Nintendo. For the most obvious example, there is Minecraft on the Switch. Minecraft is not owned by Nintendo

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

$50 in 2011 is worth $70.09 today

2 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 3

Yep. The cost of video games has not increased much.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I mean, they removed everything from any box, no more paper, manual, map or anything. I wouldn't even be surprised if i only find a printed paper with a code to simply DL the game without even a DVR or anything else. And paying for a digital version of a game feels different. (less dust, sure, but still.)
And as it is, the need to be online 24/7 to be able to even launch your game is tedious, plus the non guarantee of keeping you game forever when it's digital.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The things you're talking about cost pennies per game.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Overall? Sure. It still makes it way less appealing to spend money on them, even with "so little increase over the last 20y".

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ocarina of Time was $60 dollars when it came out in 1998, which is around $115 dollars in 2024 money.
Yet people still complain that $70 dollars for tears of the kingdom was too much for a Zelda game.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Ocarina of time had extra costs associated with manufacturing and shipping which is time and material costs.. ToK could be downloaded.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Which only matters if your income went up commensurately.

2 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 3

I’m sorry you make bad life choices. That’s not Nintendo’s fault.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel like the original meme just used domain expansion to become about wage gaps and economic trends, and not just a meme about video game costs.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

So it doesn't matter if your income didn't change at all? What?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The commenter was saying that the original price of $50 was actually “worth” more than the current price of 60, but as a proportion of your available money to spend, this only holds if your available money went up by the same amount (40%). If your income remained the same or close to it, then 60 is still a greater percentage of your spending money, at the time of purchase. If your income did increase by 40% then hey, that 60 is actually proportionally less and so it’s “cheaper”. But it didn’t.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

So…. Nintendo is responsible for lack of ability to earn more money? Seems like they have other things to worry about than hire much money to make. But yeah…totally makes sense to blame Nintendo. You’re wicked smaht.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In fairness 50 dollars in 2011 is equivalent to 70 dollars today- So technically its cheaper contextually?

2 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 5

And median income went up as well, so there is a better income vs price ratio now.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 5

Yes if we just hold our hands in front of our face and look specifically at that - and nothing else - then scream loud enough that would definitely start to represent the full situation.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

And they cost exponentially more to make

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

You genuinely that stupid? Games are far more profitable for these companies than ever. It's a download. No box, no disc, no manual, just 99.9999999% profit each sale.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

Fantastic if your housing costs didn’t double during that same time period

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

hey that's not nintendo's fault, they're not running a social welfare program

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is it Nintendos fault the cost of housing increased?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, Nintendo sucks when it comes to pricing. On the flip side, though, their games aren't plagued by micro transactions, DLC, season passes, and all the other enshittification that the other major publishers are pushing. So, it's a trade-off.

2 years ago | Likes 272 Dislikes 9

I see you haven't heard about Fortnite.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 10

Fortnite is not a Nintendo game. How is this relevant to the comment?

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

their games are plagued with online feature that they shut down after a couple years, voluntary... and sometimes because they fucked up (hard coded ip of third-party servers)

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

They've always been behind the curve on net code. It's almost like they don't want people who play their games to know that the internet exists.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Xbox 360 came out in 2005 and had better online. They're literally decades behind.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You ever hear of smash bros? Good luck if you ever want to try it.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They’re starting to dip their toes into it though. They’ve already done paid DLC for their last two main Pokémon games and Smash Bros characters being DLC also

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes they are, they sold dlc for BOTW then gave those features for free in TOTK. Smash bros dlc was terribly priced, mario kart sold tracks and for a huge price but said "hey you get it free if you pay monthly for online which also should be free". Nintendo does nothing but gouge its customers moreso than it's competetors.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

May I direct you to Pokemon?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"not plauged by DLC" aren't Smash Bros and Zelda and Pokemon like their biggest games?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Zelda isn't plagued with DLC. BotW has one massive expansion for a very reasonable price, and TotK has none. Pokemon is made by GameFreaks, not Nintendo. Smash Bros is the only one I agree.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nintendo's online still sucks assssssssssssssss

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't understand why people complain about micro transactions, DLCs, etc. Just buy the part you want, ignore the rest. For majority of single player games, I buy the base game and never touch DLCs. The existence of those extra products have zero impact on my experience with the game.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

The "zero impact" part isn't exactly true. For example, if micro transactions for in-game currency exist, you can be damn sure that getting the currency through play will be made more of a slog. The publisher is always motivated to tip the "standard" game so that the extra purchases look more attractive.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The only game it had such an impact in way was in Shadows of Morder, and they changed it after the outcry.
And even if it did happen in other games, I obviously didn't notice it, so it had zero impact on me.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Right, zero impact on you, and that's fine. Other people have definitely observed changes in modern AAA games. Modern Assassins creed games are huge offenders. Modern Forza/Gran Turismo progression systems suck compared to earlier entries, so you're more tempted to buy cars. Halo 5 and Halo Infinite are basically micro transaction shops with half a game attached.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, that was my comment - a personal observation on the topic at hand. I don't speak for anyone but myself. And in your example, I have played just the AC games, and there had no impact either. Could enjoy the games without ever looking at the shop.

Maybe that is the difference, I don't know what is in the shop, so I don't feel I miss out on what I could get.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Smash has season passes for characters pokemon has dlc. The trade off is that you can mod Nintendo games on the console not just on pc. Nintendo has a problem with recycling titles. We haven't gotten a new mainline Zelda since breath of the wild. I loved totk and echoes but they're not a new Zelda. Pokemon refuses to give gamefreak time to make a good 3d game. The enshittification is definitely present on Nintendo in the form of their powerhouse franchises being recycled to death.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Though I love Nintendo's games regardless of if I disagree with the spinoffs of the last 8 years. Its just a shame that our current mainline mario game is from 2017. totk was built on a 2017 game. Pokemons graphics up till scarlet and violet were just recycled 3ds models. Course I'm biased though because they were so strong from 1996-2017 with their 3d games, but have since stopped. Maybe the switch 2 is what they're all being saved for.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They used to be that way, but now they've figured out they can charge premium prices for subscription fees just to get access to classic games, add a ton of DLC to Smash Bros, lock huge chunks of the pokedex behind paywalls.... They're catching up with the rest of the gaming universe slowly but surely.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

Neither Gen 8 or Gen 9 locked the Pokedex behind paywalls. Sure, you couldn't find them in the wild, as they were native to the new areas, but the whole dex was accessible through Pokémon Home, trading, and Raids and the games did not stop you from obtaining them. The dex update was free for everyone. Only the new Mythical and Legendaries would be difficult to get, as only one of each appeared. But they COULD still be traded over.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Pokemon home is a subscription (i.e. paywall)

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Sure. But it also has free usage, as well. And most people THAT invested in Pokémon already have home, not even necessarily for the newest game. And, again, that's not the only option. Literally trading and raids exist, and the DEX (like was originally said) is NOT behind a paywall. Using the semantics game in order to play the victim when there is none is a weak way to support an argument. And let's be real: the people looking for ways to BE the victim were going to find issues, regardless.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most nintendo games do include a singular $30 dlc. But they're almost all worth another half game of content. The only real exception i can think of is smash brothers but also the people begged for it, so I'm not surprised they sinked down

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you want all the dlc for Mario Kart you need to buy a seasons pass.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Cod black ops and infinite warfare zombies one of my favourites. Last one still costs 60 euros on steam. New bo6 costs 150 with all dlc. Has no gameplay footage whatsoever but lots of but this skin ads. And the last video I watched about how they rig with ai so you het easy kills, matchmaking, auto aiming with ai whenever the algoritm understands your patterns of quiting and makes it easy to play for you. Since I know that I'm really done with gaming. Don't like single player that much.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I really don't think their pricing sucks. Companies like Ubisoft and Activision Blizzard will charge even more on release (and sometimes keep the base price high for a very long time too), BUT they will still feature in-game stores with tons of in-your-face-all-the-time microtransactions. So in these cases there really is no trade-off.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

That's a good point! I guess my original statement was based on Nintendo not doing big sales like Steam. But, you're right, if buying on release, big publishers will absolutely try to charge you more than Ninty.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah you get $60 worth of game in my experience

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It feels like they are heading that way, even pokemon has dlc's now

2 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 4

And expansions to DLC.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

? If you mean the two waves that they did, then yes? But it was all one DLC split into two waves. One price.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

DLC =/= MTX

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't think it's entirely headed that way. They're open to the opportunity, clearly, but I think they are more careful about the integrity of their franchises and of the reputation of their company than some other developers (*cough* Ubisoft, EA, Activision Blizzard *cough*). And for example, Zelda BOTW had DLC but they decided not to do it for TOTK and that was despite the game selling really well and a lot of fans asking/hoping for DLC.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I'll also add that the BotW DLC was amazing and huge, for a very reasonable price.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sort of, the dlc are taking the place of extra iteratio s with new content like yellow, crystal, emerald etc

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So the game that required you to buy other games to "catch them all" has a DLC and you think this is a new trend for the Pokemon games interesting.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I do prefer the "DLC on top of the base game" model over the past "Three or four games with the same base map" setup they had going on. Good expansion packs are a thing of all ages, it's shitty small DLC that's the devil.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Aye. The DLC in BotW is well worth its money.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Before the DLC you were forced to buy another 60$ game because of updates and new content. Was usually their third installments. That's why Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Platinum are ao expensive compared to their base games

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pokemon DLC is replacing the old system of "3rd game that comes out later and I just better than the original pair" though, is it's mostly a positive

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's a shame. Though, somehow fitting, as the last couple of generations of Pokémon games have felt below par, relative to Nintendo's other franchises.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

IMO, Gen 8 fits this bill, as was the remake of Gen 4 (which is a shame because I adore Gen 4), but get 9 (in spite of having dlc) had a lovely story

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'm willing to accept it since it means the end of full priced "third versions". In the case of SWSH the DLC was better than the base game anyway.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pokemon is made by GameFreaks, not Nintendo.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

DLCs*

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but i look at it a little differently. We're getting a bunch of actual new content a year after release that includes a lot of 100% new story, areas, and Pokémon for less than the game price. As opposed to getting the third installment that's the same game, but with some different story, all the same places except maybe 1, and 3 to 4 exclusives Mons a year later, instead (and at full price). I actually like this way, way more.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Also, if we're being honest, the people who were going to buy that third installment were people who already bought one, or even both, of the other two versions. So any argument that brings up the need to have the base game to get the DLC seems weird. I highly doubt anyone who wants to buy a Pokémon game, wants to NOT experience the main game and wants to ONLY play the DLC. I mean, maybe I'm wrong, but that seems odd.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have games I have and haven't bought the DLC for. Much prefer this over every game costing 90.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The DLC was good though? New maps, new story, tough battles… I was happy to pay more for more content

2 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 4

Have the new 3d games progressed past ps2 level graphics?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't mind dlc when they're actually good, as long as I get a fair amount of enjoyment out of the extra content

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Pokemon already unnecessarily into two full-priced games every time though. So there's that.

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

Just play pokemon showdown for free. Maybe youll learn something about the game other than learning how to play against AI made for children

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 30

There's no AI in Pokemon...

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 5

There's a lot I love about the current generation, but there is no way I can seriously say that this game is nothing more than a buggy beta. Maushold is my cherished beloved, but the state the game is in even after the updates and DLC is embarrassing. Do a Tera Raid battle and look me in the eye that it is functioning as intended.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I can't imagine Pokémon games being held to the same standard as many other AAA games. Thinking about Metaphor getting shit for some frame drops, FF16s Quality Mode dipping under 30, Diablo 4's few bugs that are annoying but don't really impede you.

Scarlet & Violet has a game in there I could love, but the entire experience is marred by technical incompetence that's probably as bad as Cyberpunk was at release. But the just say "Oh the Switch is so weak." DESIGN IT WITH THAT IN MIND THEN?

I didn't play its DLCs, but my wife did. And the second DLC was physically painful at times with the horrific frame rates and the constant graphical issues. I'd rather fight pre-visual nerf Consort Radahn than watch that again.

It used to be included in the base game.

Also, they don't come out filled with awful bugs.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bugs? There's no bugs! How dare you

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I feel like you haven't played any Nintendo games in recent years if you think they don't incorporate DLC. Pokemon, Xenoblade, Mario Kart, their best hitters all do it.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Xenoblade DLC was a whole ass fucking game (and always is). Nobody cries about the EXISTENCE of DLC. Expansion Packs have existed for decades.

Be honest, Nintendo's DLC practices are far more consumer friendly than 90% of the industry. At least for their main titles, I'll grant you they are kinda scummy with their old games.

Out of those 3, only Mario Kart is made by Nintendo. Pokémon is Game Freaks, and Xenoblade is Monolith Soft

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're still Nintendo exclusive. How many times have you heard Halo described as an Xbox exclusive title?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Monolithsoft is owned by nintendo, which is why they did a ton of work on zelda, splatoon, and animal crossing. Saying they're "not nintendo" is like saying the original smash bros isn't nintendo because it's made by hal labs

Oh I didn't realize they bought them. My bad. Make that 2 out of 3 then.

I still need someone to convince me it's worth $60 to buy a 30 year old game even if it has been reworked for the switch. (Link's Awakening which I played the shit out of on the og gray cube)

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

If $60 is a significant amount of money to you, then you arent their target demographic.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

It's affordable but when I'm buying games the inner teenage me who had to think hard about buying stuff comes out and asks "really? $60?!"

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How many times are we going to buy Final Fantasy 7?!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Only once, on Steam with the remastered version. To be fair that's because I borrowed my brother's copy to play it on the computer forever ago, but the first disk glitched so I never got to, well, you know. (Unless you're counting the remake but that seems substantial enough to count as a whole different game. Which I have not bought. Yet.)

UIs are better now, and for lifelong gamers that may not make a big difference, but for newer gamers it can be night and day. I've been introducing my newly-gaming mom to the games I grew up on and loved, and if it's not new or a remaster, she really struggles. The Links Awakening rework was awesome, and she had a blast playing it.

Regularly sells for $45 on physical cart.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I played it. It's worth it, actually. If you can comfortably spend it, do it.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Idk about "convincing", games are a luxury hobby item, and whether they're worth the price is a matter of perspective. FWIW, Link's Awakening on Switch has brand new graphics that the creators of the OG game can only dream of. If you tell me that's not enough, I'll tell you that's a perfectly valid opinion.

The graphics update was nice, but it's the QoL changes that are spectacular. Why yes, I DO like the shield and boots having a dedicated button like other 2D Zelda games, instead of taking up an inventory button. The CONSTANT switching in the original is just about the only negative thing I have to say about it.

I'm waiting for a crystalis remake that lets you switch swords without pulling up a menu.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Link's Awakening is a remake, possibly one of the worst examples to use as a "rework" being overcharged for. I'm very frugal with my spending on games but that's one example of a $60 "old" game that is justifiable, it's a completely different game than the one from 30 years ago. Same basic map, same story, but the moment-to-moment gameplay is wildly different.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I've been hesitating because I loved it on the Gameboy and I've got tons of unplayed Switch games so kinda hard to justify, but I've been tempted.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is being a 30 year old game relevant? If it's a fun game, it's a fun game. If a person can't easily get their hands on the original version, and/or if they've never played it before, it might as well be a new game.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

If someone can't get their hands on the original, it's probably because Nintendo itself has been attacking sites that distribute it. Don't defend their shitty practices.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Less about the age and more about it being a portable game since those generally cost less back then. Sure Nintendo blurred that line with the Switch (and Steam with the deck) but not every game needs the same price tag across the board. Sure games are expensive to make, but some of their games clearly cost more to make but yet they all have the same price tag so that doesn't feel like justified pricing.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

/shrug If you want less expensive games, support indy devs. Don't look for consideration from big name studios like Nintendo.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Fair enough, and what I already do personally, I just figure that's what the other person was getting at mostly. Only way to really protest is with your wallet. People are free to spend their money on what they like, it's a fary cry from some of the shit some triple a devs pull with releasing seemigly unfinished games at full price at the very least.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I made that mistake with the Mario RPG remaster they recently released. It was one of my favorites as a kid. And it was a lot of fun, but it was still quite obviously a SNES game. Improved graphics doesn't cover the outdated rest of it, not for 70 dollars at least.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And yet you’ll hand over $70 for a madden/fifa/cod game that’s been the same for just as long. Nintendo is not the company to protest.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 11

One should avoid jumping to conclusions. Haven't played a football game since Tecmo Bowl, cod was the OG and maybe the sequel, and I only ever played a fifa game at a friend's house. Now I have bought Chrono Trigger multiple times, so there is that.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’ve never played a madden/fifa in my life. And haven’t played cod since modern warfare 2, the first one. I have on the other hand bought Skyrim 3 different times.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I'm still playing Madden 2005 on my PS2

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nintendo sells basically all their games at $60-70. No matter what. Did it come out yesterday or seven years ago? Doesn't matter. Is it holiday season? Doesn't matter. Is it a small game or a huge one? That's the difference between $60 and $70. If Nintendo had made Vampire Survivors, it would've been $60.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

eh. the switch Estore has some decent deals even on main titles every so often. downside ofc is it is a digital title instead of the physical cart.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Incorrect. Nintendo has released smaller digital only games available on the eShop like The Stretchers, Good Job!, Part-Time UFO, and Kirby's Dream Buffet. These games and others might be $20.00 or less. Other retail games like Switch Sports, Clubhouse Games 51, Everybody 1-2 Switch and a few others retail at $40.00 and have had sales as well. I believe the only game they've charged at $70 has been Tears of the Kingdom. Sony and Microsoft have more games at that price. 1/2

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Also, Nintendo games do go on sale. They've already announced sales on certain games and hardware for Black Friday. https://www.nintendo.com/en-ca/whatsnew/nintendo-announces-black-friday-offers-providing-even-more-ways-to-play-this-holiday-season/?srsltid=AfmBOoomT_60r38S5NLPuCkJlIAzokQRakBTtU03o1tNtV2hduvJqOO_ This stupid criticism of trying to make seem Nintendo more greedy than other developers by saying they never have sales and charge everything from 60 - 70 complete bunk. 2/2

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

If you want to complain that you think they should have even greater price discounts on their games when they do have sales, go ahead and make that argument but don't say they never have sales or discounts on their software. And one game being charged at $70 so far is doing a lot of work to say they charge $60-70 for all their games.
