I have a bone anchored hearing aid (BAHA) and the skin around the metal post has been irritated. So, my doctor used silver nitrate to cauterize the extra skin to burn it away. It was mostly painless with some stinging.
The hearing aid snaps onto the metal post and sends sound across my skull to my good ear on the other side.
After a shower and some gentle scrubbing
Applied some steroid cream.
MrsGroovy
How does this differ from a cochlear implant?

Dont let this guy fool you sheeple, that's a 5G port from the vaccine. They download your brain while you sleep and change your memories /s

Hey ladies, you can call me on my bone phone.

I always think people who undergo these surgeries (any really lol) are very brave for doing it so good on ya. It looks badass/cyberpunk too.
Licensedsmartass
If you think a bone anchored one is cool wait till you see a CI that is some cyber tech level shit :D
Mithi
Silver-nitrate helps with irritations you say? I'm gonna get some to spray my coworkers with.

So many good scabs
Licensedsmartass
Which one do you have? BAHA 5 or 6?
TheAmateurRunner
I switched to the BAHA 6 a little than a year ago. I really like the sound improvements as well as the Bluetooth updates.

I did a lot of research with silver nitrate. Spilled a sample onto my lap and got it on my hands. Stained my skin purple/brown for months
VickiStElmo
Overall thoughts on it? My MIL thinks it “cures” everything.
depressedscientist
1/3 The only thing that cures everything is death or something that causes death. Silver nitrate is toxic. Typically, all nitrates are in…
depressedscientist
2/3 their ionic form. They can be very reactive with oxygen, which is not good for metabolic processes in the body that require oxygen…
depressedscientist
3/3 my advice is never fall for the “snake oil” fallacies. Everything in nature is about trade offs, nothing is able to be a true cure all.
tinydog
Neat tech, but that looks really irritated.
TheAmateurRunner
Yeah it's not too bad. Once the information goes down it flattens out nicely. I just had some skin overgrowth that was getting removed.

Inflammation*
Rauca
A friend of mine, newsreader/reporter on Spanish TV, recently lost hearing in both ears. Damaged nerve/hairs. I wonder what could help her?
Licensedsmartass
If the nerve is damaged a BAHA unlikely be a help but that is determined by an audiologist. Your friend is more like a candidate for CI
Rauca
At the moment they've only given her over the ear aids but if my Spanish is any good, they are looking at Cochlea Implants.
davyclam
Battery?
Mithi
In the outside device I'd figure. That seem to be the "deliver the vibration" thingy.

The hearing aid snaps onto the titanium post. Here is a old photo I have that shows it: /gallery/17kdD/comment/668126168

I heard sound waves in mountains mess up the frequencies and make these things explode. Mountain do BAHA blast. That's what I heard

It's just a titanium post , so it's good for MRI with the field strength of 1.5T and 3.0T

Had a friend in high school with one and sometimes teachers would try to tell him to put his phone away when he was cleaning the hearing aid

The look on his face when he showed them his head was priceless
brobinson2001
At least they didn't rip it out or cut the cord like a couple teachers did to insulin pumps in 2005 & 2011.
TheAmateurRunner
Yeah, it's cool tech. I've had it for about 6 years so far.
mitharas
Is this just a note convenient option than normal hearing aids or do you need these for a special reason? Looks rad
Abersade
These work differently, using bone conduction to bypass the middle ear bones. This allows the sound to be picked up by the cochlea directly.
BARCODE00110001
What was surgery like? I may one day need this when my hearing declines in old age. I worn HAs since kindergarten.
TheAmateurRunner
Very easy. They are just drilling a titanium screw to th side of your skull. I just had a some dull pain in that area for a day.
SJohnson23
You and I use “just” very differently.
MadnerKami
So are you hearing a difference in terms of direction or do you hear everything as if it came from the same side?
MrsHowVeryDareYou
SAME Q! I have hearing loss in 1 ear and I can’t triangulate sounds for shit.
