I see this brought up again and again and again.
Legally, laws got more and more precise because child rapists would escape justice on a technicality around 'imprecise' legal language. And to also reflect severity. A man who touches a 15 year old on their leg is still a creep that should be jailed, but what about the men who kidnap an even younger child?
News media can only report actual charges, not what people think laws 'should' say, because newsrooms can go bankrupt from defamation.

Society set that limit, numerous times and in different cultures, at different numbers. At this point the 'number' that people seem to want to use eliminates an entire class of people, and results in transition from child to adult occurring overnight. Europe handles it good imo; Yes they have some very low sex allowed ages, but they do come with age-gap laws, because most Europe countries accept teenagers are going to fuck irrelevant of age limits, hence the often low age, but the caveat is the age-gap. A 30 year old bedding a 16 year old is still going to see prison.

They're not wrong that that that limit is extremely subjective. In most of the US, it's 16. In Europe, there's nowhere that it's HIGHER than 16.
It's doing a disservice to teenagers to pretend like a 17 year old has the same reasoning and maturity as a 7 year old. That's not excusing abuse of teenagers, it's maintaining honesty. It's also why I prefer using the phrase "young girls" to describe Epstein's victims. It serves as an accurate description without infantilizing teenagers in general.

Hi, person in the EU here where the minimum age of consent is above 16. But also in the EU, the age of consent is different from the age in which certain acts against children are criminalized. Prostitution, abuse and sexual coercion would be considered crimes against children if they are under the age of 18 in the EU.

Caveat for Europe age limit, it often comes with Romeo & Juliet laws (age gap laws). Yes 16 is legal, if you're 14/18 (most of the time). Full adult is still 18 in most Europe countries. You bang a 16 year old in Europe as a 30 year old, you still going to see prison in many of them.

If you read it, you'll check that in the second section, the minimum age of consent in EU is 18 (see international obligations), all lower ones come with caveats, even the 'unrestricted' ones in the EU.

However, as it's at least above the bare minimum, we won't nessesarily want to castrate them as befits anyone choosing to prey on somone below the minum mark, we just shun and/or mock them instead. Still a form of punishment, but less severe because at least they're not a fucking pedophile, like anyone who would try to argue that "if 18 is okay, why is one day earlier any different?"

Did you catch my link about states with no minimum age for marriage? Here it is. Basically, 10-year-olds can get married in many states. In the 1990s, states were raising their age of consent. Where I live, the age of consent is 16. Add in the "Romeo and Juliet" exception, and a 15-year-old can consent to sex with an 18-year-old. Or, for that matter, a 12-year-old and a 15-year-old cab have consensual sex.

Actually, the drinking age should be a little later, since it's based on the idea that alcohol can prevent a brain from properly developing, and the brain doesn't stop developing until the mid to late 20s... I'd be okay with moving the age of consent to that point to. Let's just say 30 for everything and call it good!

It's been soundly debunked that the brain finishes developing in the mid 20s. The researchers who did the study say the results have been completely misinterpreted. There's been a lot written about it if you're interested.
