One of the worst thing is people making jokes about how they are "schizophrenic"...Do you even know what a Psychosis is you twat
HighlandPotatoe
I know someone like this... They've really no fucking clue about real mental health issues.
sofcknwrong
20 years ago people mostly suffered in silence - families too. Now they can vent on anonymous Internet platforms and get support and advice.
ImperialWatch
I'm of the thought that nothing really changes. I think some of these people do have depression but they use 'meme's' to be sardonic of it.
They normalize it, just like people did back in the day when all they did was drown it out with alcohol. We just have better methods for
feeling sorry for ourselves. 3/3
JhericFury
While i believe this happens, especially with OCD, don't mistake people who look fine and say they have mental issues as pretending.
lyricallove
Yeah. My doctor was surprised when I attempted suicide. She always thought of me as cheerful, which is why not even my spouse understood 1/2
just how much I was suffering until the suicide attempt. 2/2
Beleg7
And many of the people struggling with real mental health issues will hear this as confirmation that their problems aren't real enough.
Budgetactionbarbie
This is too true. It took me years to get help because I didn't think my issues were valid
denim2500
same, it was so easy to convince myself that i was being overdramatic. it didn't help that the first dr i went to was a complete douche
xthetenth
Yeah, I'm glad my depression didn't have this to use against me. It was bad enough as it was.
LacklusterUsername
WORD. Let's make them feel like no matter what someone is worse off than you, so you don't have real issues(sarcasm)
Gatihaa
Nah, I don't think so. He's talking about the ones who are obviously faking it like all the tumblerites that share their fake PTSD stories.
That's immediately how I took it and I'm a fucking disaster.
I feel like that's a mental health issue in and of itself. If you need attention that badly there is an issue with you psychologically
RyanMcFlyin
True! Conversely, as a marketing manager for a place which helps the development mentally disabled, it's challenging to come up with 1/2
Winterous
Unless you missed an 'of' in there, I believe you mean the 'developmentally' disabled.
Yep- my phone auto-corrected for some reason and I hit send before I saw what happened...
Campaigns which affect real lasting change. Food for thought!

TheVapeCrusader
See u there.
reznorforeverandaday
Just because someone's OCD, autism, whatever does not seem like yours, does not mean their issues are just as real as anyone elses.
*Are not just as real* you know what I mean, I hope.
HarbingerOfDownvotes
nw, just gives us an opportunity to upvote you twice.
sassaire
I have anxiety and depression, and I'm comforted by all the recent memes of it. Makes me feel...less alone, you know? Less fucked up.
kellycorn
Yea honestly they made me be able to more casually talk about how I wanted to commit suicide which led to me getting understanding and help
PiGiSpi
Is this when everyone in the comments starts with "as someone with a REAL mental health issue, I agree!"
Craftykit
as someon ewho's seen these things before, i belive so.
lyinginbedmon
I'm more annoyed by those that use them to dismiss anything someone says. I could complain about a sandwich & it'd be "autistic screeching".
TheManFromNoland
Its ironic how many people are backhandedly bragging about their mental health disorders on this post
MissSiesta
I think imgur is actually a great place for introverts and anyone with a mental disorder to hang out. Makes one feel almost normal again.
LearnSomething
Maybe people just want to talk about it because it's therapeutic.
Which is why I'm pretty open about problems I've had. If someone needs to talk through something, they might feel safe with me.
I'm open with them if someone else brings it up. I get mixed reactions.
Yeah, that's not unreasonable. I figure that the possible value if somebody needs to talk is way worse than if someone doesn't like it.
True.
fatexchangestudent
That's what I noticed too
imasnorlaxIRL
The fuck is there to brag about? It's one thing to share stories and empathize with each other but it's not a contest of whose more broken.
WaitingForTheDoctorAndTheTardis
As op wrote, some of these people can't make friends, and might not have anyone else to share with.
Sharing and bragging are different though~
wellwellwelllookwhoscomecrawlingback
Yes. Also the irony of invalidating another person's mental health because they don't think it's "real", perpetuating their own stigma
zflazeda
We do have a tendency to exaggerate our feelings, but a mild form of something is still a form of. The issue seems complex
cleverbeans
I think it's more that they're critical of how it's being hijacked as a fashionable charity. Big phone company here has done that.
FlightRisk3154
I'm going to need to know exactly how much pizza you have so I can put you on my list of where I can get another pizza from.
It's an approximate amount as it keeps disappearing around lunch time :)
I'll be there just before lunch to steal it...
Is it really a fashion trend? it usually comes across as people trying to find an excuse to make their shitty behavior 'acceptable'
Cyaphas
Excuses are like mental disorders?
No. @FlightRisk314 is disputing the idea that people fake mental illness to be 'trendy', instead proposing that people 1/?
use fake mental illness as a way of denying responsibility for one's actions and behaviour: something distinctly not 'trendy'. 2/2
DoublevBomb
People don't use any of the language that surrounds those issues/conditions correctly, if that's what he's referring to. Nothing new tho.
doinkdoink
Is crippling anxiety cool now? Cause according to my crippling anxiety I shouldn't even be talking to you right now.
SirBrendan
Yes,because it's very noble and conscientious to legitimize suspicion over whether these people have 'real' mental illness. Think it through
My daughter has autism. If companies want to hire diff able people. I don't care if the are doing it for money. End results is acceptance.

Are people wearing bipolar fleece? Maybe a phobia glove?
BunnyGoesHopHop
The bipolar fleece is very itchy.
most of the time it's really itchy but sometimes its super comfortable

Some of my students in their late teens refer to themselves as "alcoholic" because they once got drunk three days in the same week...
SuzetteTheSmoreSchnappsGirl
you should bring in some true alcoholics. the ones that now cant stop drinking or they'll die
EchNa
Struggling myself with Heroin, kicked alcohol last year around August. Addiction is a demon that's killed my fiancé and friends. 1/2

I stopped taking my meds cause I miss dreaming. Fell asleep making breakfast for the kids and almost set the house on fire. I'll be good.
ButchLobster
Or people who started doing (x) because their "hero" did it so why not? One year later they've sold everything they own for dope
I know some people who were like: "I drink all day every day cause I'm an artistic rock star and I'm great!" And then BAM, they're fucked
Smilinnoir
I was like that. Deployment saved me from the BAM.
that's about how mine went - although it was just voluntarily conforming to a stereotype for me
v3rmilion
I drink because I used to be an artistic (wannabe) rock star but thanks to depression I haven't really written anything in three years :/
Write about your depression. It helped me work through a lot of stuff!
It was bad writing, and I knew it, but I wrote it with the intention of not sharing it. I was a wannabe novelist
corruptcore
I know a crazy amount of morons that call themselves alcoholics because they party more often than most people.
gerontophilia
Drink and drugs tend to burden people with poor mental health.
Nah, it's the other way around. Substanse abuse is not a problem but a symptom
exactly!
more likely, their mental health/neurochem makeup was shaky to begin with and alcohol/drugs flipped the switch
zamielvanweber
For the third time this week I was so terrified of sleeping I refused to take my meds. Isn't having mental health issues grand?
Astha
I'm afraid to sleep because of the night terrors I have 4+ times a week.
why nightmares or something?
I suddenly and firmly believe if I sleep I will die. My meds make me sleepy so no meds = no sleep = "success."
ahhhhh gotcha.
disidi
I've had that same issue for years now. You have to accept you'll die in your sleep and come to peace with it before konking out. Sucks
It is a not-rational reaction due to my schizoaffective being not properly managed. Acceptance is not easy.
TheLycanthropist
At one time I thought your consciousness died in your sleep. When you wake up the next day you are the same person, it's just not you.
pairou
And now this will be me this week.
DoubleDoubleYeti
Thank you for sharing. I get this but have never shared for fear of ostracism.
SociallyAwkwardCanadianMoose
Done that
Marijuana. Babies don't sleep as good as I do. Mmmm.
Omg i know exactly what u mean!! This happens when i take unisom. Even tho ive taken it b4 w my meds i still think that this will be it
Doesn't help the meds have utterly usurped my sleep cycle and my symptoms are worse at night and I am not on the full dose of my meds
floweryfartbox
sorry for yelling but Y'ALL GO AND CHECK YOUR VITAMIN D LEVELS !!11 it's associated with stuff ....
vulturedoors
Especially if you're a woman or lactose intolerant.
YES. being deficient in b12 causes mood swings depression etc etc. I was almost.completely deficient and since ive started taking the shots
Although here, normal levels of b12 are between 200-900 pg/ml. For me it's kind of weird, it's very wide range
It helps my body to better absorb my meds. Dr said so
Tassyr
I just don't get it. "I've got depression and it makes me speshul lol!" I don't want to be special, I want a brain that's not fucking BROKEN
AlabasterCrashesDown
It's scary when you can't escape from your own brain.
Tell me about it. I know when something's going wrong. I can see it. I don't want it to. And I can't fucking STOP IT.
It would be amazing to just be normal...
GeneTheAwkward
Yeahno. Mine isn't even an acute case and I know many have it worse. And my episodes suck. The goal is not to let it make me special.
Ducky11
That's my goal too..
BubbleGumNoel
wait people actually do this ?! -o.o- glad I only go on imgur and my ps3/ps4. stupid ppl !!! >.<

theoriginaldickbutt
This, it'd be a fucking blessing to not constantly swing between wanting to die or almost psychotic mania. It's been a shitty year so far.
I hear that. I'd love to not be stuck on "wanting to die" with a side order of trust/relationship/social interaction and focus issues.

Honestly, I would consider killing for someone else's brain if it meant I never had to deal with compulsive lying or Adderall ever again.
Fuck I hate how adderall feels.
Its even worse for me, cause I dont even get a "high" or something off it. it just removes the headache when I think.
poilk91
well think about it this way. It could be taboo to talk about and a lot less people would get help. Or its not taboo ad people are annoying

Listen, I don't want to say you're not broken cause I get it, it feels like that. But I don't know it's helpful to think that way.
5am13
Look, I don't want to undermine what you're saying, but it isn't like flipping a switch to think positively, especially when
your brain feeling broken is most, if not all, of your life. Thinking positive is good, but it's not that easy.
Nah, I wouldn't say it's telling you to think positively since that doesn't help, I just don't think framing it as being broken 1/?
Isiel89
Agreed. I want to be able to hear what my family says and actually focus and process their words.
WaluigiInAWheelchair
ADD?
I don't recognize that one but it sounds horrible.
It's typical ADHD in women.
ClimbThemCrimps
Huh, what you described sounds like a big problem I have & I always just said "I have really bad auditory processing". Can you tell me>
Huh. I've got adhd as part of my mess but for me it's more like I just can't shut any input out and my brain tries to pay attention to all.
Freeflare
ADHD manifests differently in women than in men. Often later in life, which may cause some of the issues.
I don't even know what being "normal" feels like because I recently realized my normal is mental illness.
That was college for me. Not fun at all.
CaptainMewMews
Tru. I was the one that told my friend that she obviously had anxiety. It was just her normal. She got a shrink later and they confirmed.
Jeanettasaurus
"Look, a post about how mental health isn't a fashion trend! Let's make it one in the comment section" - Imgur
IlikehowScottishpeopletalk
I recently went to a doctor to discuss my feelings and daily life issues. I don't feel I was taken seriously....
I had a psychiatrist for awhile after I was diagnosed, basically just rated how anxious and depressed I was and altered my meds as needed..
Therapists and counsellors are usually much better at helping you work through issues. Takes time to find the best fit though.
Flyndaran
I've met so many incompetent borderline insane therapists that I stopped trying. Too poor to play the roulette wheel again too.
Shame. Hope you find your own way out.
judgemasterven
will baker act you in a heartbeat. You get locked up for a minimum of 3 days evaluation. It's... not good. 2/2
Yeah, if it was a regular MD, don't. Just ask them patiently for a referral to a psychiatrist. Say the wrong thing to an MD, and they 1/
dickbutt
....says the person who just used someone else's tweet to ride mental health to FP
Wow. You just showed me the grim irony of this post. Thank you @dickbutt, I was blind but now I see.
As a sufferer of severe bipolar disorder this kinda disgusts me
ICanHasJava
I'm so sick of this. No it's not a fashion trend, but some people are creating awareness of a touchy subject. It's not fucking easy.
UncivilizedEngie
Seriously. This post is basically saying, "your problems are fake and not worth anyone's time."
raidleadergutts
Lol no, but way to miss the point entirely.
PainGwen
Talking about it is important so that people don't suffer alone.
ButYouAintGotNoLegs
I'm glad people talk about it, because awareness is very important. However, the amount of people who self diagnose and then use their
experience to discredit others is too damn high.
Nuvenor
Uh I self diagnosed myself and you are totally wrong bruh.
rav3nE
I self diagnosed myself too and I can safely say that I have depression, autism, mutiple personality disorder, cancer, butt cancer, ocd.
fun fact, butt cancer is not actually a cancer. it's actually a respiratory disease.
thexian
But that's kinda the thing, right? How do we know if they self diagnose? OP kinda assume we all know which one's do it for attention.
SHwannabe
I think a bigger problem are those who decide casually that sick people are just "craving attention" or "going with a fashion trend".
I was an adult LONG before my mother even heard of mild autism or fully understood my crippling anxiety and social phobia.
My facebook feed and Imgur are soaked in attention whores competing for whom is more victimy.
SquatOnmylalala
I get your point but I cant imagine that being a huge problem for people fighting mental issues, they.. ehm have bigger problems to focus on
I agree to a certain extent. But I do feel sorry for my friend when people say that have OCD because I don't think they'll ever know what
real OCD is like. My friend was living a nightmare.
SwaglortSeal
It's different for everyone. I have chronic melancholic depression and a sleep disorder which essentially means I'm going to be sad and 1/2
tired my entire life. Even with medication. When someone else complains about being down or 'depressed' I comfort them. It's not their 2/3
fault that I'm broken in the way that I am. Their issues are just as valid as mine. Nobody can have a monopoly on sadness or any illness 3/3
gunnexx
As someone with an issue, it is a problem for me. They marginalize my issues into a 'quirk' thats funny on TBBT and because so many people 1
claim to 'suffer' from it, it waters down the perception people have of it
Like they dont realize how serious it is?
freenna
yeah
Oh.. well I didnt think that it affected people with mental issues..
Kizsurian
Bingo. It's a ploy for attention and sympathy for them, and makes it harder for actual sufferers to get taken seriously.
Couldnt it be used also as a way to teach how to behave around people with mental issues?
Ohhhlookaunicorneatingasamurai
But how else do I explain my crocs?

It only matters when people won't provide care because they think you're faking it, which is their problem not yours.
It's frustrating with some conditions that are difficult to prove and sometimes thought of as fake (like DID)
Dude, I've been struggling with Dissociative Identity Disorder for years without a diagnosis. I can't even mention it 1/?
online without having random strangers doubt my sincerity. But anyone who knows me has noticed it even before I told them 2/?
about my "episodes". It terrifies me that I feel the need to justify my own illness to anyone who asks, whilst simultaneously despising 3/?
anyone who 'fakes' mental illness as an excuse for their shortcomings. I can never be quite sure who I would be without my illness 4/5
DID is hard to understand. My wife has it and before she had an episode, I didn't really know what to think about it. It's a coping 1/?
mechanism. Anytime her PTSD is triggered, an alt comes out. Just last night we had some hail and it triggered a flashback. An alt named 2/?
Yikes, I Hope you're both coping well, my friends child comes out at toys, Christmas lights, bright colorful stuff, play parks, sweets etc
Gayle came out, but she didn't tell me she switched, which annoyed me. My wife and her alters, by my request, agreed to inform me if 2/?
they switch. That's all I asked for and to tell me how bad Sara is doing. Apparently this alt doesn't pay much attention to the world. 4/5
cinemeasctha
Do I have to show my prescription to talk about it?
Wellbutrin, trileptal, klonopin, am I doing it right?
DanyVengeance
I'll show you mine if you show me yours
mechanicalchaos
You know what? I'm glad it's a trend. I'm glad it's in the open. Because prior to this in our society there was great shame and (1)
misunderstanding about these topics. I didn't create my disorder, I didn't choose it. It's a part of me but I don't own it. So go ahead (2)
and pretend to have it. Make it your fucking halloween costume. Give it attention, have people discuss it. It wasn't long ago that (3)
when I brought up my disorder, people would get quiet and act awkward. Now people don't give a shit because it's not unheard of. \o/
myronblayze
Wellbutrin and Prozac. Man I'm reading everyone's responses and thinking "I rememeber when I tried those drugs too!" And nothing worked.
CanadianCobraChicken
What happens if you don't have a prescription but are still diagnosed?
I was never medicated for my ADD, so I understand what you're saying.
I've got Generalized Anxiety Disorder. There are times meds would help, but I also dont have it as hard as others
Only on meds because of my PND. I did a lot CBT for my ADD, it helped me massively. My Ma a bit of a hippie didn't want to use drugs
PersephoneGoddessOfSpring
Stupid question, but how do you get properly diagnosed? I've been dealing with things I call anxiety, depression etc. but always feel 1/2
I went to a councilor and they gave me a quick Q&A test. That's the only way to really disgnose it, as far as I know
citoyenne
your school's psychiatric services office. They can provide talk therapy as well as a diagnosis/meds. It's awkward as fuck at first, (2)
GothKirby
Anyone who specialises in mental health, psychiatry or psychology is the best to talk to about it, but your doctor can help too. 1/?
I started out going to a doctor where I was diagnosed with depression and generalised anxiety, then was referred for CBT (therapy) 2/?
Where I was then diagnosed with a whole lot more by a psychologist/therapist; panic disorder, OCD, phobia on top of what the doc said. 3/3.
brassknucklenerd
(maybe the downvote was from someone who didn't understand your question?) I knew since 12, learned to hide it, started seeing a counsellor>
< in my 30s, she said you seem like you're suffering from depression, I said yeah probably and we didn't do much about it (she was a >>
<< University counsellor and I was there for something else), it got bad a few years later. Started seeing another psych, got medicated >>
Stigmatized to mention any of it because people will tell me I overreact and whatnot (especially those closest to me). Also important 2/?
to note that I don't simply worry or have an off day but the kind of stuff I've been dealing with has stunted by uni career badly3/?
(though I have no idea how I've made it through x.x) 4/4
Really depends on the diagnosis. It can be good to seek out a specialist in what you suspect you have.
and they can help you find alternative ways of dealing with what's bothering you. (4/4)
but talking to someone is worth it. If you have an illness, you can get treatment, and if you don't have one then at least you know (3)
If you have a family doctor, talk to them first. They can probably refer you to a specialist. If you're a student you can also go to (1)
As someone diagnosed (with a prescription) I think it's about how people find cool to say "omg I'm so OCD", "my anxiety has anxiety lol"
Although i agree about the OCD though. People claiming their tiny quirks are OCD is really annoying. At least look up case studies
And shit like that, because the moment u REALLY have these things, people do not understand
I make jokes about my anxiety. I have it diagnosed, used to take meds. How do you know those aren't properly diagnosed?
ApolloTheSpaceFox
Who?
I make jokes too but all people say these things, it's a trend now
Plus, I don't make that kind of joke, they're more subtle...I don't go telling everyone "hey hey I have an anxiety disorder",but I try to
Make awareness anyway
Corgibuttnubs
Lithium Carbonate. What do you have?
Sertraline myself.
demonictofu
Prozac - It helps me function almost normally. Yay...
NeighborlyAdvice
Prozac turned me into an emotionless robot, but I liked it. Plus, no withdrawal coming off of it or with a missed dose.
Oh me too. I take it for a couple weeks at a time when I'm in my worst stages of the cycle, then skip it for a week or two so I can 1/
Remember what it feels like to be a human with emotions
Wellbutrin, Trileptal, Klonopin, lovely Bipolar, PTSD, and anxiety. Wooo...
InfinityOnHigh0109
Lexapro!
Watch out if you ever try to come off Lexapro. The withdrawal is AWFUL
What was it like?
20mg 1/day. I went from 20 to 10 to 5 to 0. The vertigo, nausea, chills, memory lapses, increased insomnia (even with sleeping pills)... 1/?
Blehninja
Venlafaxine for my depression and anxiety, and truxal as a calming med if I know I'm going to be in a high anxiety situation or for after.
Bladeroller
Sertraline here as well. Low dose, drastic decrease in panic attacks. From once or twice a day to a couple a year. Wing Chun helps too!
TinaRuthBelcher
Lorazepam!!!
Lamictle wellbutrin klonopin pristiq (which btw is amazing for ppl who are prettt much treatment resistant. Helps me focus too)
The only brand name i take is pristiq bc samples. Sooo lamotrigine, buproprion, clonazepam
Busterchestnut
Tried pristiq from effexor and went back to effexor, even though they are the same chemical, pristiq's just the metabolite of effexor 1/2
New chemical=no generic for 7 years=pharma profit. Anyways, a pharmacy that had a non insured discount program yes me a 3 month supply 1/3

Woo, Wellbutrin and Klonopin for me
darthlordvadermort
Wellbutrinnnnn! (Though I know it as bupropion.)

Woah , it really helps my mood swings, i cant tell u how awful rapid cycling is
I know it's awful... Welbutrin did that to me, lol

Which one is amazing?
Pristiq
Thanks. I hate SSRI's and have a prescription for pristiq.... maybe I'll try it

I personally think its distasteful to be nonchalant about anxiety. I have GAD and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. It's a thief of joy
Dahliaisahedgehog
A nurse asked me what meds I'm on and why. I said for GAD and he was like "ha who doesn't have that?" o.o
johnjacobjingleheimer
Some think mental illness isn't real. my dads ex said that my brothers severe psychotic break when he was 18, was just "teenage rebellion"
jewelyaa
I think part of the problem of people not believing in mental illnesses is because so many people claim to have them. Even I have a hard
Time believing people when they tell me they're depressed, and I have anxiety and depression, so I know that they exist.
Siegmier1
Yeah I couldn't leave my house without throwing up, between meds and therapy I've mostly overcome it save for big moments
dekket
What's GAD?
Lilshadow48
Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
DisneyMoreDisney
I find Anxiety has replaced depression as the "hip" mental illness. The people i know who are diagnosed, on meds, and have there life (1/2)
Completely affected dont mention it constantly on social media. You get anxious sometimes you dont have anxiety (2/2)
QuillInk21
I try to make fun of my anxiety because I feel sometimes that lessens the control that it has over me. Which is a lot sometimes.
I feel the same, except with SAD. Fuckin great acronym too.
TalladegaNights2006
Borderline personality ruins friendships and can push to to destroy yourself. Emotions are out of l when relationships seem unstable 1/2
and I try to hurt myself to see if people care. It may sound like I'm an attention whore but it feels like I'm literally losing friends 2/2
ankhgabrielle
I have coworkers who joke about "having panic attacks." And I'm like...no. You didn't. You were nervous. Not the same thing.
waveofawe
I had GAD since I was a teen until I was 30yo. I overcame it with therapy, meditation, herbs and nutritional suplements (5htp, omega3...) It
can be done, but it takes effort. And you have to do all of the things, not just one or two. It took me like 4 years to say goodbye to anxie
ty once and for all. I believe that anxiety is what lies beneath many depressions and addictions.
superhans1988
Curious as to whether you're completely anxiety free, I'm not convinced I ever will be, tried Cbt and many pills and nothing helps
goodgodlemon30
I do as well. Stay strong!
Agreed
IamHalfrican
MDD, GAD, PTSD here
gry110tene
I have GAD.yes it fucking suck. I'm on meds. But I cant just change your life with meds. I'm so used to being alone because of it :(

I have a daily struggle with driving to work due to the idea of having to ask someone to let me in the garage? It's good stuff.
zeethenomad
I dated a girl with it too. God... she could find the dark, pessimistic side of anything, and would be CONVINCED of it. Very sad to watch.
How did you deal with it? My sister is the same way, and it's exhausting. She's on meds, and I know it's her brain chemistry! But I get so 1
Wow ive never heard it from the other side before.. yea we are convinced. It seems so true and real.
TeamRocketHR
I care very much for someone like this... I wish he'd see the positives in himself. Feels like he's running away from or scared of them.
instantbeetle
Had to leave a relationship like this, she just wasn't active enough in her own treatment.
Frustrated with her constantly being negative and making awful choices. I've been withdrawing from her a lot lately because of it :/ 2
RagtimeRaver
Does she see a therapist?
I tend to be light hearted about a lot of things, including my (doctor diagnosed) anxiety and depression. Though i guess my humour is very-
Despite being low risk I became diabetic. After my doctor prescribed a cheap med, I said I was glad it wouldn't cost an arm and a leg.
-noticeably sarcastic. But whatever works for people, i don't know them, i can't know if they're legit.
Dark humor can help a lot.
jimmyjamz11
Same. Tend to avoid discussing it because "i struggle w/ anxiety" either sounds like you're asking for attention or leads to "oh, me too!"
They usually give me a look realizing how full of shit they sounded.
I just toss out real experiences. I lost 13 pounds in 9 days due to an attack. I've literally hid in my closet for near an hour. Etc.
Sneckz
I cant afford to go to a doctor for it but I feel like I have slight anxiety and am too scared to talk to anyone about it in case I am >>
Exaggerating. I can't sleep sometimes cause my heart is racing, I twitch and sweat around strangers, and I take no opportunities that >>
Involve me having attention put on me.
buckbuckbuckybuck
Anxiety since 7. Suicidal at 9 due to severe bullying. Mental health robbed me of my innocence and hope.
Wow I'm so sorry. Part of my ability to stay somewhat sane is because I had a normal childhood until 13 so I know "normal" is achievable.
I don't even remember most of my childhood thanks to anxiety.
ILikeCuteGifsAndICannotLie
I tried to kill myself at 9. I'm 42 now and life gets better if you let therapy work and the right drugs.
andychristman2000
Agreed, I remember being on the flight deck and a fellow patient told me, my best thinking got me here. So shut up and listen, and I did.
tinyfootprints
GAD? I don't know this abbreviation.
Prosecutrixxx
Generalized anxiety disorder. Persistent and overwhelming worry.
General anxiety disorder
GlennTheWisp
I have a friend with BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder), and she is very well ticked off when people call her "Bipolar", What sickens me/
is the fact that they say it jokingly, which sickens me
I'm surprised about the difference in diagnosis of disorders in Norway vs the US. Here, it's actually really difficult to get a diagnosis
shutupandgetoverit
Same, and I rarely talk about it either because no one takes me seriously anyways.
I'm getting some small VA benefits for anxiety and everyone who I mention it to looks at me like I'm milking the system or acts like it's
Not something I should be using the VA for.
Same here. My husband, best friend, and I all have GAD. But I also have bipolar, panic disorder, and agoraphobia. It sucks how often they
expect me to be able to handle things the way they do.
Ronin42
Amen I have bi polar and anxiety also When I can deal properly with something my wife tells she don't get why bc she got depression and does
I hate how self-centered many are only considering their problems to be real and all others weakness and choice.
LokiKingOfJotunheim
Yeah, it's rather annoying how people go, "I'm ADD lol." NO. You aren't. Not unless you've been diagnosed.
I joke about mine. I figure if it nearly screwed up college (that and depression) the least it can give is a laugh or two.
thewhifflingtit
So people who haven't yet seen someone who can diagnose them can't have ADHD? By golly, you've done it! You've found a way to eliminate ADHD
All we have to do is stop diagnosing people! They can't have a disorder if they haven't been diagnosed with it, after all.
Most people saying it probly don't have it though. I'm referring to the asshats who say it like it's a fad. Like when they say "I'm so OCD".
I have ADD and anxiety but I do joke about it. I'm 30, I've lived with it, I know what works for me. Sometimes it sucks but if you can't
I was diagnosed with ADHD and some form of social anxiety. I can laugh about it. I just get annoyed with people who treat it like a fad.
laugh about it, it's just that much harder.
SAD here, I hear you. I'm missing my bfs birthday because he's going bowling with his friends. Most of whom I've met but it's a new place ..
I'll have to get there by myself and I haven't met everyone that's going so I'll probably not be able to go.
Well hopefully he understands I hate going out for to long and drive my wife crazy bc I end up rushing her bc I start to get really anxious
And fell panic for no reason at all. Anxiety the worse and it just makes my bi polar harder to deal with just be strong
thatjamieguy94
I have GAD also and I tell people I wouldn't wish it on anyone also cause it can turn the most chilled thing into a living hell
DoctorSvenHoek
gross ass disorder?
Why is this down voted? Bumping you back to 0 bro x
Maybe that one girl faked it. But it's not really fair to say that because one makes a casual comment, they're not depressed or anxious
racecarbedx
This is what I was just diagnosed with. Just started seeing a counselor. Trying to conquer it with no meds.
MichaeIScott
Same minus the counselor
XplodingUnicornGlitter
Check out both CBT and DBT. I was able to harness mine for almost 10 years with out meds until it got to be entirely too much.
margaretolson
Look into the book "mind over mood". It is a CBT tool and helped me immensely, along with therapy
CurlingOneOut

juria
Yoga has helped me wean off 2/3 of my anxiety meds. I thought my therapist was crazy, but I committed to trying. She was right.
It was a 2 month process for both meds. Definitely not an overnight fix.
Tesdinic
Its funny because I am on the medication but scared to death to see a psychiatrist
I was at first also but it does help. Mine taught me techniques that help with everyday stuff that causes my anxiety to flair up.
Sounds like an anxiety problem.
sheshazelnuts
It's your choice, but there's no shame in meds. The right ones will just get the symptoms under control so you can deal with the causes
AlCoolAJ
It isn't always about shame. Sometimes you already have a salads worth of meds for other issues and stacking on more is undesirable for you
With all the addiction issues my family has I want to try all treatment without meds. It's scary how easy we get addicted to things.
That's understandable. My fam has a lot of the same issues. Your doc should be able to help you find one that's not addictive. I've been 1/
On meds for almost 20yrs. I'm not addicted, my brain just doesn't work properly without them. As always tho, entirely your choice. Be well!
I am heavily considering it. I am tired of being anxious about everything. I think of everything in extremes.
tiddersandbacon
And it sucks all the energy out of you. Oh! You need to go grocery shopping after work? TOO BAD. There will be lots of ppl there
mjso23
Fuck you said it
goldenatmosphere
And you're convinced everyone's staring! I'd rather starve than go grocery shopping

You want to get better get out there and do stuff. Gad sucks ive had it about 4 years now but the only thing that helps is literally facing

The bus solo but i am getting there

Let's to at 6 am when no one is there. What's that? Too tired? 3 months later still no groceries.
How have you not starved to death by now?

You are speaking to my soul. Now I just get everything delivered.
If you put your "gives-a-fuck-o-meter" Down to zero and basically be a bitch, it's kinda manageable, but you can never turn it back on
Hell yeah, Walmart.com free shipping over $35, now I can stay home even more! :D I fear going out and specifically seeing people I know.
I have anxiety and depression, on top of a rare disease on my face. The universe was like "buy 1 get 2 free!". Sometimes it is hellish
That sucks... I'm sorry. You're among friends, though. Depression, GAD, PCOS, and chronic pain. Gotta love the genetic lottery!
MyHouseOnMars
Mental disorders seem to like pairing up, it sucks.
TheFoxQueen
I know how you feel I have depression, anxiety, minor autism, and ADD. I'm just a cesspool of problems
Zyrixion
How about that, that's the exact set of neurological problems I have. I'm sorry.
Solidarity! ...from afar...cause it's hard to leave home when you have anxiety
worldsokayestspeler
I actually went to a therapist for what i thought was depression, turns out to be anxiety. I dont tell too many people because of @ops point
RickySpanish1
Same exact thing happened to me. The meds sure do help though
Ur not the only one

I am open with my friends because I don't want them hating me over a manic swing, and I unfriend them when they go "crazy buddies!" Lol no.

I went to the ER for what I thought was a heart attack or collapsed lung. Anxiety. I also have kept it to myself for the most part.
ShaunDreclin
I went to the ER for what I thought was both my legs cut off by a train. Nope, Anxiety.
Mayonnaiseisainstrument
Humor so black, not even imgurians approve it, +1
ExaltedFlower
Thanks to an ER visit and a follow up with a doctor I was diagnosed with GAD while living abroad, in South Korea. (1)
I endured a lot of hell w/ docs in the US saying it was all in my head and convinced my mom I had bulemia. Everytime I had an attack I'd (2)
Get really worked up over irrational bs and it would make me sick to my stomach and afraid, just so damn afraid of everything. Meds help (3)
Iwillhaveoneofeverything
I have fainted at a hospital cause of anxiety attack. Blood pressure dropped 60/30. First time hospitalized. Laying in bed felt ridiculous.
I get chest pains so sharp and blindingly painful I stop breathing once every 3-6 months. Hearts been tested heavily and it's just fine.
Matrican
I went to ER for the same thing. Turns out I have a panic attack because of the amount of people and I have PTSD. Nice first day in college.
lildeidei
Panic attacks are the worst thing I've experienced yet in my life. I'm sorry :/
It gets better by each time, the first time is terrifying, not knowing wtf is going on, vision goes dark, breathing increase, sweathing...
I hope you got some help and are doing better.
Yeah I am, still hard, and are regurarly having backlashes where I am thinking about ending my life, the cause of my PTSD in some extent.
Essenemg
One of the worst thing is people making jokes about how they are "schizophrenic"...Do you even know what a Psychosis is you twat
HighlandPotatoe
I know someone like this... They've really no fucking clue about real mental health issues.
sofcknwrong
20 years ago people mostly suffered in silence - families too. Now they can vent on anonymous Internet platforms and get support and advice.
ImperialWatch
I'm of the thought that nothing really changes. I think some of these people do have depression but they use 'meme's' to be sardonic of it.
ImperialWatch
They normalize it, just like people did back in the day when all they did was drown it out with alcohol. We just have better methods for
ImperialWatch
feeling sorry for ourselves. 3/3
JhericFury
While i believe this happens, especially with OCD, don't mistake people who look fine and say they have mental issues as pretending.
lyricallove
Yeah. My doctor was surprised when I attempted suicide. She always thought of me as cheerful, which is why not even my spouse understood 1/2
lyricallove
just how much I was suffering until the suicide attempt. 2/2
Gatihaa
That's immediately how I took it and I'm a fucking disaster.
LacklusterUsername
I feel like that's a mental health issue in and of itself. If you need attention that badly there is an issue with you psychologically
RyanMcFlyin
True! Conversely, as a marketing manager for a place which helps the development mentally disabled, it's challenging to come up with 1/2

Unless you missed an 'of' in there, I believe you mean the 'developmentally' disabled.

Just because someone's OCD, autism, whatever does not seem like yours, does not mean their issues are just as real as anyone elses.

nw, just gives us an opportunity to upvote you twice.

Maybe people just want to talk about it because it's therapeutic.
xthetenth
Which is why I'm pretty open about problems I've had. If someone needs to talk through something, they might feel safe with me.
LearnSomething
I'm open with them if someone else brings it up. I get mixed reactions.
xthetenth
Yeah, that's not unreasonable. I figure that the possible value if somebody needs to talk is way worse than if someone doesn't like it.
LearnSomething
True.
fatexchangestudent
That's what I noticed too
imasnorlaxIRL
The fuck is there to brag about? It's one thing to share stories and empathize with each other but it's not a contest of whose more broken.
WaitingForTheDoctorAndTheTardis
As op wrote, some of these people can't make friends, and might not have anyone else to share with.
TheManFromNoland
Sharing and bragging are different though~
wellwellwelllookwhoscomecrawlingback
Yes. Also the irony of invalidating another person's mental health because they don't think it's "real", perpetuating their own stigma
zflazeda
We do have a tendency to exaggerate our feelings, but a mild form of something is still a form of. The issue seems complex
cleverbeans
I think it's more that they're critical of how it's being hijacked as a fashionable charity. Big phone company here has done that.
FlightRisk3154
I'm going to need to know exactly how much pizza you have so I can put you on my list of where I can get another pizza from.
wellwellwelllookwhoscomecrawlingback
It's an approximate amount as it keeps disappearing around lunch time :)
FlightRisk3154
I'll be there just before lunch to steal it...
FlightRisk3154
Is it really a fashion trend? it usually comes across as people trying to find an excuse to make their shitty behavior 'acceptable'
Cyaphas
Excuses are like mental disorders?
HarbingerOfDownvotes
No. @FlightRisk314 is disputing the idea that people fake mental illness to be 'trendy', instead proposing that people 1/?
HarbingerOfDownvotes
use fake mental illness as a way of denying responsibility for one's actions and behaviour: something distinctly not 'trendy'. 2/2
Think it through
reznorforeverandaday
My daughter has autism. If companies want to hire diff able people. I don't care if the are doing it for money. End results is acceptance.
OneUpperSteve
Are people wearing bipolar fleece? Maybe a phobia glove?
BunnyGoesHopHop
The bipolar fleece is very itchy.
denim2500
most of the time it's really itchy but sometimes its super comfortable

it probably qualifies.

eadanke
I stopped taking my meds cause I miss dreaming. Fell asleep making breakfast for the kids and almost set the house on fire. I'll be good.
ButchLobster
Or people who started doing (x) because their "hero" did it so why not? One year later they've sold everything they own for dope
ButchLobster
I know some people who were like: "I drink all day every day cause I'm an artistic rock star and I'm great!" And then BAM, they're fucked
Smilinnoir
I was like that. Deployment saved me from the BAM.
AOCsUnshavenChode
that's about how mine went - although it was just voluntarily conforming to a stereotype for me
v3rmilion
I drink because I used to be an artistic (wannabe) rock star but thanks to depression I haven't really written anything in three years :/
LacklusterUsername
Write about your depression. It helped me work through a lot of stuff!

It was bad writing, and I knew it, but I wrote it with the intention of not sharing it. I was a wannabe novelist

I know a crazy amount of morons that call themselves alcoholics because they party more often than most people.
gerontophilia
Drink and drugs tend to burden people with poor mental health.
Meqad
Nah, it's the other way around. Substanse abuse is not a problem but a symptom
AOCsUnshavenChode
exactly!
AOCsUnshavenChode
more likely, their mental health/neurochem makeup was shaky to begin with and alcohol/drugs flipped the switch
zamielvanweber
For the third time this week I was so terrified of sleeping I refused to take my meds. Isn't having mental health issues grand?
Astha
I'm afraid to sleep because of the night terrors I have 4+ times a week.
AOCsUnshavenChode
why nightmares or something?
zamielvanweber
I suddenly and firmly believe if I sleep I will die. My meds make me sleepy so no meds = no sleep = "success."
AOCsUnshavenChode
ahhhhh gotcha.
disidi
I've had that same issue for years now. You have to accept you'll die in your sleep and come to peace with it before konking out. Sucks
zamielvanweber
It is a not-rational reaction due to my schizoaffective being not properly managed. Acceptance is not easy.
TheLycanthropist
At one time I thought your consciousness died in your sleep. When you wake up the next day you are the same person, it's just not you.

And now this will be me this week.

Especially if you're a woman or lactose intolerant.
tonksl
YES. being deficient in b12 causes mood swings depression etc etc. I was almost.completely deficient and since ive started taking the shots
floweryfartbox
Although here, normal levels of b12 are between 200-900 pg/ml. For me it's kind of weird, it's very wide range
tonksl
It helps my body to better absorb my meds. Dr said so
Tassyr
I just don't get it. "I've got depression and it makes me speshul lol!" I don't want to be special, I want a brain that's not fucking BROKEN

Tell me about it. I know when something's going wrong. I can see it. I don't want it to. And I can't fucking STOP IT.
MissSiesta
It would be amazing to just be normal...
GeneTheAwkward
Yeahno. Mine isn't even an acute case and I know many have it worse. And my episodes suck. The goal is not to let it make me special.

your brain feeling broken is most, if not all, of your life. Thinking positive is good, but it's not that easy.
ImStillFlying
Nah, I wouldn't say it's telling you to think positively since that doesn't help, I just don't think framing it as being broken 1/?

I don't recognize that one but it sounds horrible.

It's typical ADHD in women.

ADHD manifests differently in women than in men. Often later in life, which may cause some of the issues.
Isiel89
I don't even know what being "normal" feels like because I recently realized my normal is mental illness.

I think a bigger problem are those who decide casually that sick people are just "craving attention" or "going with a fashion trend".
Flyndaran
I was an adult LONG before my mother even heard of mild autism or fully understood my crippling anxiety and social phobia.
Cyaphas
My facebook feed and Imgur are soaked in attention whores competing for whom is more victimy.
SquatOnmylalala
I get your point but I cant imagine that being a huge problem for people fighting mental issues, they.. ehm have bigger problems to focus on
ImperialWatch
I agree to a certain extent. But I do feel sorry for my friend when people say that have OCD because I don't think they'll ever know what
ImperialWatch
real OCD is like. My friend was living a nightmare.
SwaglortSeal
It's different for everyone. I have chronic melancholic depression and a sleep disorder which essentially means I'm going to be sad and 1/2
SwaglortSeal
tired my entire life.

They marginalize my issues into a 'quirk' thats funny on TBBT and because so many people 1
gunnexx
claim to 'suffer' from it, it waters down the perception people have of it
SquatOnmylalala
Like they dont realize how serious it is?
freenna
yeah
SquatOnmylalala
Oh.. well I didnt think that it affected people with mental issues..
Kizsurian
Bingo. It's a ploy for attention and sympathy for them, and makes it harder for actual sufferers to get taken seriously.
SquatOnmylalala
Couldnt it be used also as a way to teach how to behave around people with mental issues?
Ohhhlookaunicorneatingasamurai
But how else do I explain my crocs?

It only matters when people won't provide care because they think you're faking it, which is their problem not yours.
HighlandPotatoe
It's frustrating with some conditions that are difficult to prove and sometimes thought of as fake (like DID)

Wellbutrin, trileptal, klonopin, am I doing it right?

I'll show you mine if you show me yours

You know what? I'm glad it's a trend. I'm glad it's in the open. Because prior to this in our society there was great shame and (1)

Wellbutrin and Prozac. Man I'm reading everyone's responses and thinking "I rememeber when I tried those drugs too!" And nothing worked.
CanadianCobraChicken
What happens if you don't have a prescription but are still diagnosed?
cinemeasctha
I was never medicated for my ADD, so I understand what you're saying.
CanadianCobraChicken
I've got Generalized Anxiety Disorder. There are times meds would help, but I also dont have it as hard as others

Only on meds because of my PND. I did a lot CBT for my ADD, it helped me massively. My Ma a bit of a hippie didn't want to use drugs
PersephoneGoddessOfSpring
Stupid question, but how do you get properly diagnosed? I've been dealing with things I call anxiety, depression etc. but always feel 1/2

I went to a councilor and they gave me a quick Q&A test. That's the only way to really disgnose it, as far as I know

Some think mental illness isn't real. my dads ex said that my brothers severe psychotic break when he was 18, was just "teenage rebellion"

dekket
What's GAD?
Lilshadow48
Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
DisneyMoreDisney
I find Anxiety has replaced depression as the "hip" mental illness. The people i know who are diagnosed, on meds, and have there life (1/2)
DisneyMoreDisney
Completely affected dont mention it constantly on social media. You get anxious sometimes you dont have anxiety (2/2)
QuillInk21
I try to make fun of my anxiety because I feel sometimes that lessens the control that it has over me. Which is a lot sometimes.
Lilshadow48
I feel the same, except with SAD. Fuckin great acronym too.

Flyndaran
Dark humor can help a lot.
jimmyjamz11
Same. Tend to avoid discussing it because "i struggle w/ anxiety" either sounds like you're asking for attention or leads to "oh, me too!"
Flyndaran
They usually give me a look realizing how full of shit they sounded.

I have a friend with BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder), and she is very well ticked off when people call her "Bipolar", What sickens me/
GlennTheWisp
is the fact that they say it jokingly, which sickens me

I'm surprised about the difference in diagnosis of disorders in Norway vs the US. Here, it's actually really difficult to get a diagnosis
shutupandgetoverit
Same, and I rarely talk about it either because no one takes me seriously anyways.

Yeah, it's rather annoying how people go, "I'm ADD lol." NO. You aren't. Not unless you've been diagnosed.
xthetenth
I joke about mine. I figure if it nearly screwed up college (that and depression) the least it can give is a laugh or two.
thewhifflingtit
So people who haven't yet seen someone who can diagnose them can't have ADHD? By golly, you've done it! You've found a way to eliminate ADHD
thewhifflingtit
All we have to do is stop diagnosing people! They can't have a disorder if they haven't been diagnosed with it, after all.
LokiKingOfJotunheim
Most people saying it probly don't have it though. I'm referring to the asshats who say it like it's a fad. Like when they say "I'm so OCD".
LearnSomething
I have ADD and anxiety but I do joke about it. I'm 30, I've lived with it, I know what works for me. Sometimes it sucks but if you can't
LokiKingOfJotunheim
I was diagnosed with ADHD and some form of social anxiety. I can laugh about it. I just get annoyed with people who treat it like a fad.
LearnSomething
laugh about it, it's just that much harder.

This is what I was just diagnosed with. Just started seeing a counselor. Trying to conquer it with no meds.

Same minus the counselor
XplodingUnicornGlitter
Check out both CBT and DBT. I was able to harness mine for almost 10 years with out meds until it got to be entirely too much.

Sometimes you already have a salads worth of meds for other issues and stacking on more is undesirable for you
racecarbedx
With all the addiction issues my family has I want to try all treatment without meds. It's scary how easy we get addicted to things.

That's understandable. My fam has a lot of the same issues. Your doc should be able to help you find one that's not addictive. I've been 1/
