CGI on the left and the real one on the right. Just thought I'd share this comparison that I found again in my phone.

What side is the cgi one

So what. The movie was ace. Best Star Wars made to date.

Leaked footage of upcoming Leia

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Let's be honest, traditional acting and effects and stuff are brilliant and clever and we all love them. But this shit is pretty ridiculous

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

True. Human-CGI characters just aren't there yet. Stills look great, but motion is off. Supernatural creatures are easier to sell at CGI.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's amazing. Maybe the most professional part of the whole film

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Even if it looked good, it still didn't fool me. I right away noticed it was an animation, and so the immersion broke. Shouldn't had been CGI

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

pretty damn neat

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I can't wait 'till Hollywood just starts exhuming all of my favourite actors/actresses! So cool!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He just went tanning and saw a stylist...smh

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Can someone please link the trailer or source of the pic? I can't find it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Source is on the pic.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought the eyes were too glossy, I found it distracting.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I could tell it was CGI, but only barely. I had to squint.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And now I'm sad, so thanks for that.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Rip.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That CGI was great. I saw him and took me a second to remember that he died.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Honestly, I don't know why people keep hating on the CGI for this guy, it was really well done.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

I mean, there are numerous comments right here in these threads that explain exactly why.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

More Cushing for the pushing.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

still frame doesn't show the main issue; Tarkin looked like he was having a grand mal seizure (couldn't help it)

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hard to take him seriously when he wore slippers in most scenes..

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Actually that would have been more terrifying to me…

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, they based it off of a head casting they had done for Real Genius, but the problem there is with the animation -- still a bit weird.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You mean "Top Secret" ...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes! Sorry about that!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The cgi side is pretty moff, but idk if it's GRAND moff

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I found it both impressive and creepy looking.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Id like to se a leia comparison cose that got so much shit

9 years ago | Likes 114 Dislikes 1

Tarkin was much better than Leia. But he got much more screen time too, makes sense they spent the money on him.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The model is extremely close, that's not the issue. Animating facial expressions and movements to look realistic is the hard part.

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

As preshr said, it's the movement that's the issue - for both Leia and Tarkin. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_valley

Damn You got me

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ok so now the CGI one for comparison.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I'm next to me sleeping fiance and i had to stifle some powerful laughter thanks to that link.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Looks real to me.

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

OMG THANK YOU!!!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I like your metal username.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Peter Cushing lives in Whitstable.

9 years ago | Likes 96 Dislikes 3

I don't think he's lived there since 1994 at least, on account of being dead

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

But I've seen him on his bicycle... I've seen him buying vegetables...

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Google says he died before I was born

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 4

Stop making me feel old!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah I'm from around Whitstable area, we have a pub here called the Peter Cushing, full of pictures and stuff from his movies.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I have seen him on his bicycle.

YUS

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Peter Cushing lives in Whitstable

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Loving that people don't get this.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

But even better that some do...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know, they're so missing out on... what was it again?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was a song by the Jellybottys which was famously referenced by Alan Davies on the show QI - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDNuW8g2LNM

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

CGI=less wrinkles.

9 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 8

CGI = Too much eye glint and no shadow on eye

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Fewer

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

He's younger in CGI

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Funny, I see more in the CGI actually. Weird.

9 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

It's because he aged.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It probably helps that the older stuff probably didn't capture as much detail, but to show the same now would look too smooth.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's awesome they can make it photorealistic like that. Only thing I noticed was that his skin was very shiny and darker than needed.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Photo realistic, yes. Video realistic, no.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They got overzealous with the glossy reflection off his eyes. You won't be able to ignore it next time you watch.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The face-muscle-motion didn't bother you? That looked way off.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why are people praising this CGI? It was uncanny valley in the first second of seeing him.

9 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 15

Do you know what uncanny valley means

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Yeah the mouth movements were weird I noticed right away

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Exactly

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I noticed, because I knew to look. No one else I saw the movie with realized. In the car my gf said "wow that actor hasn't changed a bit"

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Yeah lots of people have poor perceptive abilities. Kind of a shame.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 6

Thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought he looked wrong. It looked.. stuttery, for lack of a better description.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Depends on the person. My sister had no idea he wasn't real.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Yeah, it was unsettling and took me out of his scenes. Character wasn't really necessary either.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I mean it makes sense to me for him to be there. The *character's* presence didn't feel forced. I just wish they'd done it a different way.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They always add too many minor facial movements, it throws the whole image off

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I didn't even notice

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Anybody who pays attention to any kind of Animation would notice, I think. I know I did.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You gotta try in order to get better. I'm amazed we can even do this as well as we can. Imagine this when Ep I came out. I liked it.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

CGI for the sake of CGI is bad, like Ep I. There were so many other options available, but they decided to have a minute of pure CGI

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Good CGI, but still a shitty decision to do the character with CGI. It broke the immersion and reminded me that this is fake.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

That's a good way to put it

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cgi skin is too shiny, eyes were too shiny, too much detail definition, and lips weren't shiny enough. It looked bad.

9 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 16

It looked amazing for cgi and actually would've been passable if they didn't use it that much.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Agree. Overused.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

They could have artfully limited the amount of time we saw his face directly, maybe tossed in some reflections--we expect distortion in that

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The movement was the biggest giveaway, imo.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Just a little too smooth, yeah. Not enough momentum.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I felt the same but I read they painted this face over a real actor's face. My brain was screaming "corpse puppet" the whole time.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Too bad they botched the Carrie Fisher CGI...

9 years ago | Likes 150 Dislikes 21

They both sucked. I don't see why anyone thinks either is better than the other.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 17

Let's see you model, animate, texture and composite a human better than that.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Sad but true.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 4

Honestly, I thought the Leia CGI was great, but Tarkin looked cartoonish.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I still son't see what's wrong with it. The only difference is the lack of make-up which Leia had in ep4.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

booth stood out like dogs balls

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

That's interesting, b/c IMO they botched the Tarkin CGI (his animation kinda seemed.. stuttery? Hard to describe.) but Leia looked ok to me.

9 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 3

Same here. Tarkin looked obviously CGI to me while Carrie's looked largely ok.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Me too!

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Same here. Leia looked great. Tarkin looked like a cartoon

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It's the uncanny valley. In another ten years CGI will advance to the point where it won't seem weird at all

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Apparently Carrie thought it was good. So good she thought it was something she filmed and had just forgotten about.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but then again she was an alcoholic drug addict mental case, so she'd probably say that about anything. Or just to be nice.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 6

Betting that it wasn't any worse, people just have Carrie Fisher committed to memory better...

9 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 3

Leia looked like a live anime character. Way too big eyes.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

She looked exactly the same to me.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This. She had just passed away. Also, an older face is probably easier to accept because of all the detail.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

At least that cameo was quick. Tarkin's being bad would've ruined half the movie.

9 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 2

Point

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even if it was a HQ 3D model, it broke the immersion. Therefore is was bad for me. I was constantly thinking "I'm looking at an animation".

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 5

Yeah. Close, but not out of the valley yet.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What would you have preferred? Resurrection?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Lookalike actor.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Yes.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you cant tell visually if its fake, then any hangups you have about it is on you and not on the movie. Someone else or you could have 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah I wouldn't complain if I couldn't. Now it bothered every time I saw the actor.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

easily complained "i know its a lookalike" "why cant they show his face and only have the voice?" "i know its not really in space" 2/3

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Especially when the actor is dead, I don't think anyone would complain. GoT swapped actors all the time. Very little amount of complaints.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is as good as it gets.
