#3 This shouldn't merit applause. It's what EVERY church is should to do with all their money. Instead most just buy stuff for themselves.

My parents and I were in Germany when my father got word that there was going to be a blockade. He got me and my mother on a plane out immediately. He was in charge of the ground radar during the airlift.

I am 900% positive I am bad at life though.

Need more candy bombers in the world today

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Many years ago I knew an old German woman who told me that her First Communion dress was made from handkerchiefs used as parachutes for candy dropped by Hal Halverson and his colleagues.

As many unfortunate youths were torn to shreds in hails of M&Ms and gumballs, the children learned to fear the Candy Bomber. Mothers would tell them “he will come for you next if you show a sweet tooth”. Those who survived his reign of terror grew to be the healthiest generation in German history, with record consumption of vegetables and the lowest cavity rate the country had ever seen.

#1 the berlin crisis was one of the rare cases the soviets were being difficult for a reason, they wanted to finally settle the border question and ocupation zones and such but the weasterners simply wouldnt negotiate at all.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Partly true, but misleading. The Allies weren’t interested in the borders the Soviets wanted to set up because the Allies wanted to return Germany to self-rule and the Russians wanted to carve it into pieces.

Berlin Airlift is probably the greatest logistics effort in aviation history.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Absolutely. Always a good laugh when documentations about it bring gems like: "What would you need to fly x tons of coal to Berlin?" "I' sorry, did you say 'coal'?"

I call bullshit over the targeted candy drop. An unguided parachute at even as low as 1000 ft will drift wildly.

Have you dropped a lot of small packages by parachute? Cause I did.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Safe rate of descent no more than 20 fps, but really 10 fps to be safe, at 1000 ft thats over a minute and a half of wind drift, even in a small wind that means hundreds if not thousands of feet of drift.

#2 takes a twist when you consider it's from 2019. Getting my life on track, doing group therapy, seeing the doctor face to face and starting a new in person job. I wonder if they still kept on track in to 2020

The Berlin Airlift is such a fascinating logistics operation.

Also arguably the greatest good the USAF ever did for the world.

Older couple that were very close friends of my family, the husband was a retired Air Force Colonel who had played a part in the Berlin Airlift. He was also credited with the part of the success of the real-life BAT 21 rescue mission, in terms of an effectively-managed no-fly zone that prevented any major friendly-fire incidents. He was an incredibly humble man and a gentle soul. Animals gravitated to him.

It’s so cool you knew someone involved with the BAT 21 mission. That story fascinated me when I was growing up.

#1 Pilots like him were called "Rosinenbomber" in Germany - literally "Raisin bombers", because raisins were part of the candy they dropped.

3 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 0

Imagine being traumatized as fuck from 5 years of allied air raids and then the bombers come back after the war to drop raisins on you.

3 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Better raisins than Hersheys

Technically they were cargo aircraft. C-47s, C-46s, and C-54s.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Aw, hush. I would be hauling them home and ask if it's going to be sweet bread or oatmeal cookies (:

The world's second worst Halloween bagstuffer rained misery upon the capitol of the vanquished Reich. "Haven't we suffered enough?!" some cried, as others wailed, "we deserve this! Our crimes are innumerable!" Only the threat of candy corn kept the stricken city from complete social collapse.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not being USian, I don't know if candy corn is less bad or worse than black licorice.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Worse. Licorice is a flavor that some people like, but most people dislike. Candy corn is garbage that no one actually likes and is only made and sold because of a tradition of hating children on Halloween.
