However, it's not healthy for the animal and ethical trainers will tell you how to curb the behavior and avoid it in the future. That said, because we can't see their thoughts we don't actually know if those behaviors are sexual, as much as pure companionship. Because it only happens in social animals living in relative isolation.
I went to Thailand years ago and visited a *real* elephant sanctuary. We fed them a bit, give them a mud massage and then walked them down to a waterfall to wash off (the *only* time I felt remotely cold on that trip).

Elephants are very intelligent and engage in social play. So if socialized from a young age it isn't out of the question, but given how widespread the commodification and abuse of elephants is I would require more information to make a judgement call here.
