Look into open primaries and ranked choice voting in combination. It's my favorite system proposed. Everyone votes in every primary and you get like 4 candidates from any party depending on who gets enough votes. You could have 2 dems, a rep, and an independent or any kind of combo. It's great because you generally end up with the craziest hardline people rallying their base and winning the primary, then they run against each other. The two party system is a bit of a myth. It is not written into the Constitution nor any way required by law, legislation, or mandate. There are other parties in the US; however, for many generations, the majority of voters only vote for one of those two parties with a vote otherwise considered "wasted". A viable 'third party' has been attempted from time to time but ends up just "diluting" the power of one of the two. The main reason the two parties are so ubiquitous is money.
