We've had free bowel cancer screening in Australia for more than twenty years. When you hit 55, a shit kit arrives in the mail.

We have the same in Denmark. You get invited for free screenings for the various most common cancers once you hit a certain age-group OR if you are in a special risk group.
Of course you can go anytime to get a free screening whenever you want, but they also encourage it and invite you as soon as you hit 50 (or the appropriate age, depending on the type)

Australian here. Everyone who are aged 45 to 70 get a free bowel screening test kit in the mail every two years.
You either send in samples or not and that’s it.
Our government is concerned at the rates of bowel cancer not being found early enough.

How much is the NHS paying for each test? £5 to £15. Which is much much cheaper than any other method of testing, and much cheaper than the cost the NHS would have to pay for cancer treatments if the cancer were found later.

Yep, I had one. It turned out positive, which was a bit frightening. But then I had a colonoscopy and some benign polyps removed. Nothing of these is pleasant, but it's much nicer than letting them turn into cancer.

My brother did this test - immediately called in for tests and diagnosed with bowel cancer. Rapid surgery, short course of chemo and he’s now cancer free. Didn’t cost a penny and if not for these tests, it may have been too late once serious symptoms began showing

Poo is an amazing tool for research of large populations. You can see what people are eating, including what drugs they're taking. You can often see what diseases they have. During covid this was used to track how fast it spread, but testing poo works on a ton of stuff as well. You can see what DNA a person has.
So if the government were corrupt it could build a very extensive profile on you.
I highly highly doubt the UK government is doing that. They're really just testing for cancer.

FYI, you don't have to take the mail in colon cancer screening tests. You can just go get the full invasive one.
Now a days they prefer to put you 100% under, it just makes it easier for everyone. I mean, not you the night before when you have to take the super laxative, and technically full anesthetic means you do have an chance of death that shitting in a basket and wiping poo in a test tube really doesn't offer, but hey, knocked-out-anal-probe is a difficult fetish with many challenges.

In the US for endoscopy and colonoscopy they generally don't put you under general anesthesia. That requires intubation and as you said carries additional risks.
The standard of care in the US is Propofol sedation. Deeply asleep and can't remember anything about the procedure. That's how I got mine done, awesome nap.
In the UK the NHS uses even less sedation, often just nitrous oxide, but a memory blocking drug similar to propofol is also sometimes used.

I fully remember that I woke up screaming during one colonoscopy because my Crohn's-plagued ileum was so inflamed and stenotic that they couldn't squeeze the endoscope through, and their attempts caused me such extreme pain that the sedation wore off.

I honestly thought that being KO'd one way or another via drugs was considered general anaesthesia! Got zonked for mine (Germany) the same way, no intubation, and as you say an awesome nap. And when I came to, I was pretty much immediately fully alert, no side effects. Wild shit.

I strongly suspect I'm resistant to or my body processes Milk of Amnesia faster than the norm. I've been through three procedures involving sedation, and I have memories of partially waking up during two of them. The only one I don't is my colonoscopy, which was pretty short.

Be sure you tell your anesthesiologist this for any future procedures or surgeries. You should also tell your GP and see about getting it added to your general medical records so it's discoverable should there be any emergencies.

Thanks, I will, though I don't actually know for sure which, if any, of the sedations involved Propofol. (Maybe Propofol is just universally used if you're being sedated, IDK.) Also, from my perspective when I come out of sedation I go from napping peacefully to being conscious and broadly functional very quickly. It's possible that's just the Propofol being intermittently effective, though. I don't know what "normal" is.

In the US Propofol is used almost universally for medium to deep sedation for procedures as well as an induction agent for general anesthesia (it's the drug they are injecting when they have you count back from ten and then you pass out).
It's even used in most sedated oral surgeries (like wisdom tooth extraction).
With propofol you actually wake up before you can make memories again, so that may be why you feel you wake up fast.
