"For Trump to have his fate in the hands of this judge, whom he has vilified, is malpractice by his lawyers and very ominous for him," Litman wrote Twitter. "It's incredibly easy to ask for a jury trial. You just check a box on a form. Hard to believe that Trump understood that his lawyers hadn't done it when he's been savaging the judge who is now the factfinder in his huge fraud trial," he added. "I honestly can't believe that any lawyer hired on such an important case could make this mistake," wrote defense attorney Andrew Fleischman. "But I also can't think of any strategic reason you'd want a bench trial in front of a judge who just sanctioned your lawyers for making frivolous arguments."

AHAHAHAHAAHHHAAAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHHAHAHAHAH OMFG This is like when Whats-His-Name's lawyer sent the Sandyhook parents literally an entire clone of the phone without removing confidential or privileged infomration and it blew the case wide open
Justanotherimgurbrowser
He asked to not have a jury trial. From the very start. He felt a jury trial would be biased against him so he did not want one.
Now he is crying about not getting one. It's not even the lawyer who forgot to tick a box.
He asked for a no jury trial hoping it was a trump cock sucking judge who would happily bend over for him.
It wasn't and now he is crying like a bitch.
Sunflier
I can see this being done intentionally to give him an ineffective assistance of counsel appeal. Must have given the attorney a TON of money in advance.
oozabooza
Yes, this was yesterday Trump news. Today Trump news was the gag order. Tomorrow there will be tomorrow Trump news. Try and keep up!

Strategy: undermine your own lawyers (knowing you've lost) to claim unfair unair I'm victim again BS and request a whole new trial on appeal. bonus you get to litigate it in the court of cult opinion. always be the victim
cluelessatdis3
Until he is in jail, I will never trust these articles. Someone this “guilty” should not be out and about campaigning. Him, Clarence Thomas, and the like are still not being prosecuted. Dont get at me with “due process”. Epstein and Bill Cosby had less evidence than these politicians against them but they paid for their crimes quickly.

You get what you pay for.
rubypilgrim
I can think of one reason you'd savage a judge deciding your fraud trial. Because you're Trump, you can't keep your mouth shut, and savaging people is all you do.

yosoysoyboy
My fear is that he thinks his best chance is vilify the judge and his staff, and use his perceived grievance to rouse his followers to...act...in some yet to be determined manner.
eco79
Incorrect. They asked explicitly not to have a jury trial. There is a pic of the page on imgur somewhere
jimbox114
I swear this man can do whatever the hell he wants and not lose any of his braindead supporters or face any kind of punishment. I still fear we might end up with him as president again. I really hope I am wrong.
BishlamekGurpgork
He IS the guy who said, on national TV, during a campaign, that he could shoot someone in the middle of Times Square without losing support.
ThailandExpress
Vter1
His defense is, "my lies in the past aren't really lies if they came true later," and "some nebulous foreign national would totally pay that price?" Flimsy AF.
Eleshar24
It is no nebulous foreign national, it is likely the crown prince himself, who already backed his son-in-law by 2 billion for the stolen Israeli defense secrets, which are now being exploited by the Hamas terrorists.

LOL
wasitsomethingisaid
Could they be more afraid of a NY jury than a judge? NYC residents don’t seem to be trump fans and could punish him more than a judge.
BishlamekGurpgork
They're probably ALSO afraid of the jury, but remember that Trump vilified this judge on TV and this judge has sanctioned his lawyers, all before this happened.

"I swear trump is going to jail, he'll be in there by the end of the month!" day 1774 and counting

In the end the lawyer will make a biographical book saying how she knew what she was doing and was anti-trumpist.
SkinnerTBD
WTF is this? They specifically asked for a bench trial. Why are we playing along with this bullshit?

Propaganda.

suddenly fp five days after posting?

Imgur is a silly place.
MenloPart
I had many posts that hit 100 points and within hours had 1,000, so I thought it was a rule, but then one stopped at 105, so I thought that
MenloPart
a post needed, for example, 100 points in 4 hours. Maybe I never knew what was going on. Maybe Imgur keeps changing the rules.

well congrats anyway

you get what you pay for when hiring lawyers, and trump doesn't pay them
manystripes
That's the part that's the most wild to me. How do you get away with systematically stiffing lawyers of all people?
MileysVirus
He'd be better off with a public defender
bubbawasmybestgoodfriend
maybe she got her law degree at Trump University
ISayShenanigans
That's how she got that gaming laptop. They hooked her in with the "Enroll now and get a FREE LAPTOP" offer.

It is so disturbing how much she looks like his daughter.
TheVampireDante
Why'd you think he picked her as his rep?
darkchiron
You don't get the greatest lawyers when you don't pay your lawyers.
MenloPart
I don't understand how he continues to find attorneys. I expected the fool to represent himself months ago.
BishlamekGurpgork
He's having to pay a lot of them large sums up-front now, but money still talks.
Crosseyedcockatoo
If he’s picking his lawyers based on whether they buy into his nonsense, he’s not going to find one with enough grey matter left to be of any use to him.
shortlegcat
She'll never get paid
TiredSnowball
Most lawyers will steer clear anyway as he DOESN'T PAY HIS BILLS.
BishlamekGurpgork
Well, some have gotten paid large sums up front for this reason. The bigger problem is that S-tier (and A-tier and B-tier) lawyers don't like lying to judges.
rubypilgrim
he's picking lawyers now based on who is stupid enough to work for him at this point.
brokehackfourlane
clearly this is the reason. also, shes pretty.
Clockworkdancerobot
Maybe he's HOPING to appeal it saying the judge hated him. Nevermind he started the hate campaign.
mikeatike
They were gonna whine that it was rigged either way.
nemocares
On one hand it'd certainly fit his usual "delay obstruct delay obstruct delay" legal strategy. On the other hand his current lawyers simply being that bad would fit very well with his habit of not paying his lawyers.
zenmaster11
He can’t. He could move to amend the complaint to seek a jury trial. He could move to disqualify the judge. But he can’t appeal saying he was denied the jury trial because he invited any error by not seeking the jury trial in the first place. He waived his right to a jury trial by not asking for one.
Clockworkdancerobot
I meant As in after he gets found guilty. Laying the groundwork.
Madchant
You know that, we know that, but does Trump know that?
ijdod
And at least as important: will his supporters know that?
jayman0123
They don't know anything
Slashenaar
(Genuine question) No chance of filing for mistrial on grounds of extensively incompetent council and an allegedly biased judge? If it isn't a legal option I would still expect it to be the PR spin the give their supporters, more corrupt broken swamp system rather than a swampy trying to evict the swamp monster
Totallyscrewedinaustin
But can he get something by saying his lawyers were incompetant?
zenmaster11
He can sue for legal malpractice
acidburn1415
if this were criminal instead of a civil case he could ask for a mistrial due to incompetent council, but it's not. So he's screwed
DrBlackJack
He can sue them for damages. Basically make them responsible for a portion of the fine, but as it's highly doubtful they'll have enough to cover the fine, and since they left their firms to represent trump he cant even dig into those pockts, so he'll still be on the hook for a large portion. Basically, this might result in several bankruptcys.
paynoattentiontousernames
They left their forms to protect their firms is my take.
DrBlackJack
You are correct, and after a fuck up this big those firms are sighing in relief. But they'll also never take these lawyers back. In law, reputation is everything, and these lawyers just tanked theirs. They'll be lucky to get a job as a public defender now.
DrBlackJack
More or less all that money those lawyers got payed up front is going to disappear in a puff of smoke, along with their reputations. And after a fuck up this bad their firms won't take them back. This is what you call a career ending whoopsy.
Sierrahotel12
I think he opted for a bench trial because 1) he will appeal anyway 2) hoping the judge screws up and they’ll file for mistrial 3) because of how complex the finances are they don’t trust a jury to understand their defense. I doubt his lawyers “forgot” to ask for one, most likely some strategy thing on their part
BishlamekGurpgork
1) and 2) basically amount to "I don't really care because we're gonna force a do-over, not an actual choice. 3) is what expert witnesses are for. You get an expert up there to interpret your finances for the jury, on the strength of their expertise.
RPCharImages
Considering they keep trying to make the same motions over & over despite it being dismissed & denied, along with things trying to sue the judge as a form of a preemptive motion, to slow down & look at the evidence more closely before the judge has even looked at anything, I think this is literally a mistake on his lawyers part who simply lack the trial experience to be able to handle a case like this.
Alavar
You're still putting way to much intelligence in Trump lol
mrthewhitee
There's no world in which he gets a better judgment from a judge who has already ruled against him, and he's repeatedly attack. As a guilty defendant, you don't want the jury to understand the finances. It makes it easier for you to mislead them and muddy the waters.
MenloPart
How much strategy have you seen from him in the last 8 years?
BishlamekGurpgork
Point 3 is the only thing that suggests strategy here, and it's what expert witnesses are for. 1 and 2 boil down to "We can be careless, we'll probably have a do-over."
HatiValcoran
You say that, but he still managed to get himself elected.
MenloPart
He had a great deal of help--and millions of idiotic followers.
Lavvia
Which part has changed?
mikeatike
Millions of idiot followers won't help in a bench trial.
MenloPart
You hear about people who won't support him anymore, but I don't know that there is a significant quantity that now support Biden, so neither?
