You know, part of cost of building data center is a bribe to government, and to selected local representatives. That is how corruption works, especially in flawed democracy.
If your coworkers hate it as much as you do, get unionized and demand non-AI tools. The workers' power is expressed only when they are united and organized.
Unfortunately, they don't. One does but some are gung-ho while others don't care either way. And management is obviously gung-ho, so anyone who wants to be successful gets proficient with them. I'd like to be successful but not by using that crap.
Doesnt matter. A lot of execs only care about this quarter's profits, and if they fail to grow over last quarter, they get fired with a golden parachute.
Saw a guy with two PhDs (something like engineering & environmental reclamation) here in Reno testify, “you all keep saying ‘…if there’s water contamination, then…’ You don’t get it. If there’s contamination you’re DONE. We have no means of reclaiming the water, you’re done. Nothing you can do. You going to fine them? You can’t drink money.” Led to a moratorium on data centers.
Oh please, as if you'd have to PAY a Republican to do this. The soulless ghouls would happily do it for free just to pop a boner at all the poor people harmed
like I need you guys to understand that I want to vote for aoc for president but legitimately what is the evidence of this? when I search for it all I can find is articles about aoc holding a jar of dirty water. like I feel like i'd have to be an absolute fool to believe that every person in morgan county georgia who opens their faucet gets water like this. plz link me verifiable evidence that this is real and a result of ai data centers cuz I just don't see how thats possible even in georgia
They will absolutely force these people to pipe in city water at their own cost. This happened to my mom's house when a superhighway went through 6 miles away. They blasted a straight path through some ridges, broke through some hard rock units which supported the entire region's groundwater aquifers, and hundreds of thousands of wells coughed up rust-red water, then went bone dry. The home I grew up in was one of them. And the big corpo bosses really can't be bothered to give a single fuck.
Too easy to stunt that. Look into the guy who invented leaded gasoline and his “it’s safe” demos even after he was suffering the ill effects of lead poisoning.
I'm confused. Why must it be drinking water standard instead of treated effluent? Why is it not able to be recaptured and recycled after running through a chiller plant or a closed loop system like what's used in a nuclear reactor's cooling system? Why is the water discharged absolutely polluted? Is anything mixed in with the water such as antifreeze or any other proprietary chemicals that render it undrinkable?
Because it's cheaper to connect to existing water infrastructure than it is to put up effluent treatment systems. And privatized water companies make more money selling your drinking water to Meta, Microsoft, Google and the like. And yes, they typically use a water-glycol mixture for antifreeze.
Data centers do use closed loop cooling systems, that water is pumped to cooling towers, in these cooling towers water from the grid is used in evaporative coolers, and what evaporates needs to be replaced by the grid. The pollution seen here isn't coming from the use of the datacenter, but from the construction of it, they removed a lot of trees and used explosives as far as I could read.
I been stocking up on ammo for a while now, in anticipation of the wall of pedophiles storming North for “manifest destiny 2.0” I been looking forward to it since I first heard us mentioned as the 51st state. Fuck everything USA.
You're not wrong. It only gets this bad with ignorance, complicity or laziness. Other countries (even third world countries) absolutely sack the shit out of their fascist regimes and oust their dictators. Americans though? Shrug their shoulders and carry on.
AI is only a secondary problem here, the main problem are the missing regulations about usage of resources. but those regulations would 'hurt the shareholders'.
If I had a nickle for everyone time some idiot whined about how much regulations are bad I'd be a rich man. The propaganda engine has done a great job convincing people that corporations are good and only want good things for you despite all evidence to the contrary :/
God, like all you have to do is look at history for 2 damn seconds to see that the default state companies fall into without regulation treats human life as dispoable because capitalism only values things with a monetary value. To a business, a human life being priceless is the same as if it was worthless. There are so, so many examples of the horrors of unregulated profit seeking, but my go-to has always been the Radium Girls.
You’re right. All the regulations they’ve done away had stopped all recalls and everything. There hasn’t been probably millions of trucks etc recalled in like the last month. Tons of chicken and beef and dried milk products recalled for salmonella and listeria in last 2 weeks. Nope not at all
One of the towns near me decided to sign an NDA about a new "warehouse" development. The problem is that the filing documents for construction permits are indicative of a medium sized AI datacenter. The city council is attempting to approve it while ignoring all the negative feedback and providing no real details about the development.
I sent a message to the State AG about it asking them to investigate, because this is clearly improper.
The best part is that these NDAs are unenforceable, in the face of public disclosure laws. All it's going to take is a lawsuit. The problem is the time frame - if the lawsuit takes too long and the DC gets built in the meantime, the damage will have been done.
That's not fair. Lots of the recent presidents did a great job, they just didn't do the job we hired them to do. They did the job the lobbyists bribed them to do.
Honestly if the DNC doesn't nominate her then it's time to pack your bags and turn out the lights cause the US is fucking done.
Im a european and ordinarily your politicians range from disappointing to genocidal, so for me to say I would vote for her to be leader of my country, thats how you know you have to get her elected at all costs.
She’s a Representative. Basically, the US Congress is divided in to two houses. The House of Representatives, where she serves for New York, is apportioned roughly by population and has 435 members. The other part of Congress is the Senate, which’s apportions 2 senators per state, allowing much more focused power. They also have critical powers to confirm appointed officials.

well water makes more sense. i've read about the construction of these data centers disrupting well water by kicking up sediment and stuff.

Residents have reported sediment-clogged taps, ruined appliances, and dropping water pressure since heavy construction and explosive blasting began.

The solution here is for the data center owners to drink it and show us that it is safe.

From what she hasn't *quite* said outright, DNC backroom deals are really lopsided, and recently the DNC presidential side has been lacking.
