On the face of things: Beautiful post. But (the notorious but) I would argue that you could have tailored your presentation to include that, right? And him coming to you aid you? Any partner worth being with, would do that without thinking twice. Yet, here we are, celebrating mediocrity. We need to aim higher ladies and gentlemen. I'm happy for you, and good on him, but seriously - We can do more. Or at least make sure that these small good things, don't steal the limelight.
I try to ask questions that trip my boyfriend up. Not to be a dick but so that I'm the only one who sees him stumbling through answers instead of him tripping up on them mid-presentation.
Pro tip: If possible, schedule a thesis defense for early Friday afternoon. Profs don't want to be there any more than the students do. My PhD defense was from about 1:30-2:15, with 20 minutes of that being my summary presentation and a few questions.
What's it like being in a relationship with someone who appreciates your intelligence and believes the world deserves to know how awesome you are? Asking for a friend whose wife has never been more than moderately satisfied with anything they do and typically disappointed regardless of their effort. Seems like your experience is, uh, better.
The plant in the audience is a good tactic. Another one I've used is to intentionally leave out a tidbit that I know haters will latch onto and try to hit me with a "gotcha" in Q&A, but I already have an answer and a backup slide that crushes their objection. It's a good way to take the wind out of hater sails.
I went to my friend's thesis defense and the Q&A was a little dull / quiet, so I asked an intricate question about a specific piece I knew she had struggled with, giving her a chance to show off. Oh boy did it almost backfire, she was so nervous thinking about that part hahaha.
Funny addendum: my friend's boyfriend was there which was nice of him, but he was not supportive at all b/c he never cared about her field of research so he mainly played on his phone while she presented. He broke up with her like a week after her defense.
99% of all women: "Now THAT is a good man." Andrew Tate, Ben Shapiro, Steven Crowder, and incels everywhere wondering why they can't get women to like them: "ThAt'S bEtA cUcK bEhAvIoR! WhAt A lOsEr!"
If this was for a defense, it's so obvious when this happens. The real fun starts when the audience leaves and the committee examines the candidate. It's great when loved ones and relatives come though!
We do this in every client presentation if the client doesn't ask questions at the end - one of our own staff asks a "rigged" question that lets us highlight something, frequently also removes the stigma of going first and opens up more questions from the client
The branding of the word manipulate to be inherently negative is a travesty, not all manipulation is negative. And in fact, a lot of it isnt even conscious decision making.
As a Procurment Director, we encourage people to always let the supplier ask the first question so we can note it and make sure that topic is not to a deciding factor in the decision process, since it’s what they wanted us to focus on.
We did this at university, too. Your usage as a conversation starter is very good. Also, sometimes the presenter had some slides with extra in-depth data that they couldn't fit in their presentation, hoping they could show them off in response to questions. So if the audience didn't go there (maybe already longing for post-session cake and coffee), one of our people would!
