I voted early this weekend and only one person was wearing any merch. There were no signs that I saw saying you couldn’t, but it was like everyone treated voting as important, a duty they were fulfilling, not as an opportunity to show off their allegiances. One guess as to who the merch wearer was supporting. Hint: no one wanted to talk to them.

It's about preventing people from influencing voters within the polling area. People hawking a candidate have to stay not only outside but a certain distance from the designated space, and aren't permitted to bring their paraphernalia in. Had one years ago who kept a jacket handy and would put it over his candidate shirt to come in and see how many voters we'd had (which they are allowed to ask - anyone can! How many voted is fine, who they voted for is not).
