So I’m almost 30, and I have terrible anxiety when it comes to working. Long story short, I’ve had plenty of successful jobs that I overworked at and ended up wanting to off myself.
I’ve had major depressive disorder for about 10 years now and ive don’t so many therapies and medicines since then. Right now I’m in an outpatient program for mental health. I’m really trying.
I took some peoples advice and I’m starting small. Doing a little job to help prove that working doesn’t have to be big and scary. A dog walker! I finally got approved for my first walk after about a week and a half. I told my mom because I was so proud of myself for following through on something I found so scary. She giggled. Then laughed a little. And I’m a sarcastic voice she says to me ‘well congratulations. You can finally start making money.’
We’ve fought a lot over my mental health journey. How I’m a financial burden to my parents because of all the money they had to pour into my doctors. When I’ve had jobs, and at my worst, my mom didn’t care. She saw me as successful because I was making a lot of money. But now that I’m starting back up again, it’s like, not enough for her.
I think it hurts me a lot because this is the most mentally successful I’ve ever been. I’m in a much better spot than I ever have been before in my adult life. I guess I just want some credit from the woman who raised me.

We're proud of you! You gotta start somewhere, and every step counts. Post updates with dog photos please and thank you.

I’m currently recovering from panic disorder and I can say anxiety is no joke. Little steps are the way @op I’m proud of you bud ?
jimmyjabgames
I’m your mum now and I’m so proud of you! Well done op, I hope you have a fun walk with a cute dog :) update us

Exercise and a lot of face time with a dog. Sounds like a win to me. Every time you start to dwell on your worries you give that dog a pat.
TheYodajen
Don't EVER listen to that background noise. You are fabulous and accomplishing life. Enjoy your walk. I think it is really awesome

I have a similar story only I’m at a much lower point emotionally right now. Your success adds a tiny bit of hope to my heart. <3

I did dog sitting for 2 years and if you show you're reliable and take care of them you will have repeat customers. 1/2

"Dog hotels" are just glorified kennels that charge 3 times the price, when you could easily do the same and not traumatize the dog. 2/2

Mom sounds like a coont.
drduffer
As a fellow depressed person, it feels really good when you counter a fear or a disability with a successful strategy. Congrats! ⬆️
Smantha
I’m not your mom, but I’m a woman with a motherly streak. You’re doing amazingly well and I’m proud of you! Your value doesn’t depend on 1/

What you produce - you’re valuable because you’re a person, and surviving is enough of an accomplishment. 2/2
HeywouldJablowme
I work 8 hours a weekend keeping the garbage cans empty at a resort. It's all I have in me right now. But it does help to work
angelfixer
Similar mother. I wish you well on your journey to whatever you choose to do, mainly so you can live a life away from that influence.

JustplainGross
Walk that dog! Aside from $ you'll make another person happy, you'll make that dog happy, and in turn you'll glean a little happy for you.
JustplainGross
Then it'll 2 dogs and 2 people adding in to your part of the happy. 3..then 4, shits addictive. There will be days where you don't want to,
JustplainGross
but do it out of duty to the dogs and you'll end up happy anyway cause dogs do that to people. Go walk that dog and enjoy it
SterlingArcherSecretAgent
Some ppl will fight tooth & nail to keep you down just to make themselves feel superior. Don't let them. Congratulations on the achievement!
RG1980g1mp
One of my co-workers quit to do dog walking, he isn't charging as much as some of them and is still coming away with more money and time
apromixately
Look, she's your mom and she supports you. She shouldn't have laughed but it's not easy for your parents either. But they're there for you.
holtyun
I agree with you, it was hard reading through this comment thread… the privilege oozing off Imgur… good grief.
Vorphalack
It hurts, for sure. One lesson here is that you have to be the source of pride for yourself. Congratulate yourself, express pride within. +1
maelennfromterokkareu
It hurts most because it comes from your mom. I remember how my own mom used to yell at the teenage me “you’re stupid and ugly”. It scars.
alfmeister6227
It so wasn't true also, on both counts. You proved her wrong.

I fucking hate Capitalism - it's indoctrinated this person's own mother to tie the their child's value to their income.
BernieKl
I've seen this in socialist countries too. It's more of a misguided Puritan work ethic where you are measured by your "usefulness".
RatBits
Yup. My mom once said, in front of me, that she couldn't figure out why none of her kids were successful. Both my brothers and myself have+

+ our own homes and spouses, but none of us make good money. It's always been a struggle.
kojenk
She was sold a survivor-bias laden lie in her youth.
whatifgodwasoneofus
I have a feeling your mom is a big part of your mental health diagnoses. Mine is similar. Distancing may be your new bff for your own health

Redbeard54
I don’t think you can distance yourself from the one who provides nearly all of your financial support
whatifgodwasoneofus
Of course, as soon as it is possible to do so.
holtyun
Jesus @op, don’t listen to Imgur. You are doing great, your mom’s feelings are valid in her frustration as well. Talk through it with her.
holtyun
make your relationship stronger. She may just not understand. Don’t listen to all these over privileged folks that just called her a cunt
holtyun
And don’t just cut her out. All relationships are work from both ends. Based on your story, sound like it’s a difficult situation for all

Redbeard54
This is a good, level-headed comment

Thank you

It has been recorded, and is in a podcast, that the worst people to assist in recovery are family members. This includes mental health /
FalafelisImportant
I can vouch for that. I get support from friends and people outside my mega toxic, abusive family
TeamSpicyTacos
Professionals, who can be the worst at assisting family members.
darkdragonempress
Ok that is a bit of a misnomer. Support structures are vital to recovery. Family/friends can be crucial for day to day moments. Malicious 1
darkdragonempress
Family or well intentioned ignorant family are a problem. The toxic ones need to be cut. Ignorance can be fixed. Though you are 100% right 2
darkdragonempress
That family in mental health professions are going to be terrible because they are too close to be objective. 3
Sumdumguy42
Sounds like your mom is a piece of work. And you need to take it easy with work, so…maybe distance yourself from this work until you /1
Kehy
Sounds like me a little, where mom was actually causing harm more than anything
Sumdumguy42
Have gotten more confidence around..well..toxic work environments? Congrats on your progress!
stupidbastardinutah
I have a friend in California that makes a damn good living walking people's dogs.
SchenectadySlumlord
Wife and I make a 6 figure living watching and walking dogs.
RatBits
I had considered becoming a dog walker myself, at age 40! It's a dream job: dogs + much needed exercise. Ended up at a doggy day care +
RatBits
+ , which was great but much less lucrative (hourly, not much in the way of tips). Also, hard work physically: I was in the big/rowdy group.

I'm a full time pet sitter. Been doing it for years! Worked up to helping with management too. Don't know why ppl make fun of it as a job>

have a friend that dog sits, also makes good money.
RedNightHawk
This. But even if it wasn't the case, shitty reaction on your mom's part. At any given moment doing the best you can is commendable.
ShanOfGreenGables
So commendable! Can you tell your mom what you’re feeling, @OP? May get defensive based on what you said, but at least she’d know?
robincaid
Seems like she could be a source of a lot of your issues. Find someone else more deserving to share your life with.
AlkeneThiol
I would honestly recommend against suggesting profound life changes based on the amount of info in the OP. Dont fill in a bunch of details.
WhoReadsPeoplesUsernamesAnyway
Distancing yourself from harmful influences is not a life changing thing. It's basic reasoning that can slowly bring healing over time.

We can only go by what she tells us. The fact is that her experience shared here is of being disappointed and we’re allowed to to share our

hmm seems like she tried to poison your cup as you held it out to her, full of hope and positivity, to share. would not give that opp again
TheAnswerWasAlwaysMoreLube
I think I see where some of the mental health issues stem from...
afterdarkart
They're right @OP. I'm an Army dude you don't know, and I fight Depression/Anxiety every day. I'm so proud of you. Keep being awesome.

a stranger on the internet thinks you deserve much better. Congrats on the joy, keep it up!

Ya'know, there's a name for people who kick others when they're down or trying to get up. Anyhow, dog walking is great exercise! Out & away.
augdah93
And walking also helps undermining the anxiety! :D @OP
BigFatBobbie
Walking is the easiest way back to mental and physical well being. Definitely helps battle that horrible anxiety. ??

Better than most are getting during this pandemic. Don't let some nothing tear you down- or they'll reduce you to nothing too.

Ask your dad if you can walk his bitch for him. Sign your mother up as a dog in the app. Just don't insult the real dogs with her inclusion.

Is it a name, or more of a four-letter word?

It can be both

Let's throw in a 5 letter word to diversify her portfolio of fuckery

I was thinking 5 letter and happens to be the same word used for the female dogs they might be walking

Multiple four letter words even.

Jfc you guys do so much filling in. You dont know OP. This could be their 12th time in 2 weeks telling their mom about some gig. That would>

make anyone exasperated. It was insinuated OP doesnt follow through on things. They havent done a job yet. Expecting praise for an app just

giving you a notification about an appointment given the history... if any one of you wouldnt be skeptical, I wouldnt trust your praise ever

It be like that. We will never get the full story. Book in reading says true success comes when you can embrace a win for yourself without

The need to tell others. In reality he should make the journey his own and not mention things like this to people

What you have here is someone struggling with mental health, feeling good about breaking out of their comfort zone. Positive response is..

dude, you are a poison, just like the real alkene thiol.

I know. I offer independent perspectives based on empiricism that consider multiple variables instead of platitudes. Unconscionable.

You didn't bother reading the post properly for a start.
