As a Canadian I'm not as happy with Carney as I thought I'd be. I think he gets what Trump is, but while that would cause me to want to oppose Trump because I am morally driven, I think he is trying to be practical and do what he thinks will put Canada in the best position, which might mean not pissing off or even working with the evil empire on occasion. He's a banker, someone who made money off the status quo, we need a revolutionary.

Eh. There are rules on how to figure it out, WTO has a bunch of them. There is some subjectivity, but it's really not just "well that seems unfair". You generally have to prove things like dumping schemes, or subsidies for industry offsetting prices to the point that it's getting sold under production cost, or something like that.

I understand the impulse to punish bad servers, and I don't mean to attack people who agree with that sentiment, but if we look at this behavior through a class lens it gets pretty uncomfortable for me. The person being served is often the wealthier and more powerful, and they deny the poorer servant money for "poor performance"? Like, if your server is having a bad day and can't fully bottle it up inside, they should be paid less?

1. The customer isn't responsible for paying the staff, the owner is.
2. There is no number 2, thats it, its the owners responsibility and burden to pay their staff members. Any other proffesion out there has this standard. Tiping culture is a combo of gaslighting and wage theft.
Gratuity is fine at face value, but when it becomes expected, its no longer gratuity, its effectively a social service tax. Ok I guess that counts as 2.

The end result of you denying tips to the workers is that someone further down the class strata than you gets less money because of your decisions. We can't wish ourselves into a world where that isn't the case. Maybe one day employers will be obligated to pay their workers appropriately, but in the mean time denying tips isn't going to help. Denying that worker tips will result in them being paid less, for now, for "poor performance" in their service to you.

If you want pay laws changed, by all means campaign for it. I don't disagree with any of that stuff, except for the implication that that means you're now - as of this moment - off the hook for tipping. As it currently stands, service workers live on tips. If they can't pay rent, that won't change the law nearly as fast as it will ruin their lives.

Please bear in mind two things. First, my grandpa was born in 1930. Second, this isn’t really about tipping at all, so much as it is a general lesson in non-verbal communication that can be abstracted to apply in a variety of situations. Like the handshake vs snub scenario.
