The greenhouse effect was first proposed in the 1820s, but Arrhenius published a model quantifying the relation between gas concentrations and temperature. Keep in mind that the greenhouse effect is _necessary_ to keep the planet warm; too little CO2 and it's a snowball again.
What was built up over time was experimental verification that the biosphere has been heating up fast since the start of the industrial age (the "hockey stick chart"). Ice core paleoclimatology started in the 1960s.
