Finished

Finished view, everything installed and ready for testing.

I wanted to change my car into a camper van for summer. No definite changes, during the year I wanted to be able to use my car normally. I am not a woodworker, so many errors. But it's always nice to try something. In the end I was very happy with the result.

Complete step by step instruction together with all build plans: http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-VW-Caddy-Maxi-Camper/

Designing the plans

First step was measuring out the complete car and drawing everything in sketchup. Nice to play with different setups and seeing everything.
- Purple: Kitchen unit
- Orange: Storage
- Yellow: Table which can be closed
- Blue: Clothes

Getting the wood

We have a nice wood store not to far from us who cuts the board, down to the millimeter accuracy. Saves an incredible amount of time.

Building the units

Everything together, not yet in car

Attaching the modules together

I added some metal brackets, that way attaching them and detaching them will not destroy the wood.

It fits in the car!

Adding a drawer for the furnace

Safety in case of accident

Bingo, on the road, camping in the wild

Can I be homeless with you?

Your room window and heater look Swedish

So you take some wood and metal, make some compartments and put it in your van so that you could go into nature and camp? Neat!

You mean creeper van?

Really cool that you added the plans and process of building. Most just show the finished product.

Really nice job OP.

Vantastic. I'm doing the same thing in a truck box. Interesting how many people are outfitting their vehicles.

You must have had an awesome dad (or mom, or both)!

I saw a post similar to this almost a year ago ,but it was a man. Literally almost exactly the same setup

I wanna do this but be able to fit my motor cycle in there

Seeing the Takovo juice and the mountains makes me miss home. Good work on the van though, OP

So it's basically a bed with storage underneath?... Simple and effective. Very nice.

I want to do this some day.

Through word I support you, for through action I cannot. Live your dream.

i'm looking at doing something like this in my van for a road trip next summer. Lessons learned you want to pass on to save some headaches?

Good idea, give me a few days to structure my ideas. I'm already planning v2.0 :)

Fantastic, much appreciated! Looking at your design, i was thinking the table pulls out from bottom to stay under hatch incase of rain.

Nice. Now stay away from Floridaman and you’ll be good.

I'll take living in a van over rent any day.

I work with wood everyday, I'm also a carpenter.

There are dozens of us! Dozens!

T-shirt is a giveaway I guess? After elimination in Euro16 it was only suitable as work clothes :)

I was thinking UK for some reason. You look very...short, do they do an extra long wheelbase version? I'm too big for a bed

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is a caddy maxi, so we have 2m bed space. But I'm not that tall ... :)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You are a camper van Beethoven.

Very cool, but you'll have to replace the mattress in half a year. These thin ones are total crap.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I agree. We actually bought a second one in ikea while camping. The next one will be foldable in three parts

Rape vans are really stepping it up.Used to be old 80s econoline with no padding or candy. Would totally get kidnapped in this

10 years ago | Likes 272 Dislikes 16

My girlfriend constantly says if the van had said puppies in it I would totally get kidnapped.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

10/10 wouldnt be mad if i got molested in this.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Especially in Belgium, we get bonus points!

10 years ago | Likes 65 Dislikes 0

With the conversation I recently had with a Belgian, I am now in on this joke. Good guys Belgians, luring me into a false sense of security

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I would 100% volunteer to be kidnapped in this. Is volunteering to be kidnapped still kidnapping? Who cares. Totally would.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yeah its called hitch hiking

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think that's just called "bumming a ride."

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I like your attitude!

Why not just buy a little Motorhome? Or a small trailer? I don't get why people do this at all.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Because a motorhome is to expensive. Also remove the modules when I'm not camping

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Brilliant. I love this idea.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Curious what this set up cost? Is the van your only vehicle?/daily driver?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The wood and screws was around 250 euro, additional 150 for furnace, curtains, mattrass, etc.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is my only vehicle, but I remove the modules when not on vacation

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Gotcha. This set up makes way more sense to only use this way when camping. Well done
