A mix of an incident when I was a kid where one ate my shoelace and we had to hit the emergency stop as it ate my shoe and my absolute lack of balance, I won't touch escalators. I'm disabled and I'd still rather fight with stairs than an escalator. Back before I was quite so disabled, but still quite fat, my aunt took me to Pride in SF and I walked up 4 flights of stairs to get off the RTD to the street cause fuck that lol

It very much depends on the person. If someone entirely avoids escalators, never even approaching near one, because of this concern, then it's probably a phobia. By definition, an irrational fear response that overrides reason. If a person uses escalators, but worries enough to be extra careful when approaching the terminus, that's more a healthy respect thing.
