I read about the Scandinavian folks who do this as a hobby, the goal is to skate on the thinnest ice possible so all the cracking and crunching is just part of the experience.
Its NOT about thinnest ice possible.(or I guess it could be for some weirdos) But the thing is, you cant do that after there is snow. So it has to be between when lakes freeze and snow spoils it all. And that time is usually short, so ice is seldomly very thick at that point.
There was one winter ages ago (1988 I think)when it got cold in mid november and snows came near xmas, it was glorious. Even the usually hazardous straits had like 30 cm of clear ice.
I wish I could do that, but I've never been able to remain upright on skates, rollerblades, roller skates, or a skateboard. So many bruises and minor fractures attempting it.
There can be springs near shore. There's one near me where at least 2 snow mobiles have been stuck when they thought it was more safe to stay near shore when 30m father would have been safer.
Which the skater knows, and obviously has already checked out to be safe; but also knows the water isn't clear enough to see the bottom well further out, which would make skating the clear ice less of a visual experience for them, and for us. This is not her first rodeo.

#1 I thought they were a skyskater and those were chem-trails. (It was so clear I didn't know it was ice.)
senekis
That's gorgeous!

There is a lake in Colorado like this. crystal clear ice to skate on. Nive warming station with a wood stove right next to it.
Biker222
I hear she later shot a puck and it’s still skidding across the ice.

Tis but a scratch, but this is why we cant have ice things.

There are dead things, dead faces in the water!
ASERIOUSGOOSE
Nightmare fuel for me but I'm glad they're enjoying themselves.

#1 the sounds I'm hearing make this seem unsafe
NotAViking
I think that’s the sound of the camera gear, not from the ice (I hope)
SwedishGuyYesIDoHaveLongBlondHairWhy
They are ice sounds, but perfectly fine! The ice sings, and the sounds we hear are mainly from the skates going over it

Ice is often rather weak just by the shore.

Also.. camera filming from above so it makes sense to film it where the ice is clear and you can see the bottom.
