Looks like it's already been smoked.

Forbidden joint!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is just me, or this cutting was extremely risky?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Not at all, wet rock saws are quite safe. You may get a bit of a friction burn if you aren't careful, but they're basically smooth edged

It's bad to take coral from the ocean. Even when dead, the decomposition refertilizes the area and provides substrate for additional coral to adhere.

Paige, no!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's fossilised coral. Inside of corals is a kind of living mush*. The exterior is usually some calcified protection.

*technical term

Large polyp and small poly stony corals all have the calcium carbonate skeletons but a soft tissue layer (membrane?) on the outside along with the polyps that it uses to breathe/eat/poop in/out of. Soft coral does not have a skeleton and grows on top of rocks/dead corals/shells/whatever it can attach to.

DO NOT UNMUTE

Slice and dice: nature's rock 'n' roll, where coral meets saw and geology gets a makeover. Safety second, science first!

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was so afraid for his fingers.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Rock cutting saws like that are pretty safe. May get a bit of a friction burn if you were stupid but it won't cut you unless you lean on it

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Can that water cutter cut your finger off?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Awsome, my cats have left a ton of those around the yard!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How do they know it's pretty inside? Are they always pretty? Do they just guess?

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

You cut it open and look

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Fingers are overrated anyway.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

That’s not special. My coronary arteries look just like that.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So... not Rick Astley, then?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wanna to thank whoever added the music. I would honestly have zero idea when to react, let alone know how to feel if it wasn't for heroes like you finding just the most generic AF trash to put over these things.

I love the song (from well before seeing this post) , but have no clue how the fuck it could even relate to this display...

So... it's a geode.

can you...can you snort it?

Not to worry, that's a sintered edge diamond blade. It will cut hard things but not soft like fingers. Now, it'll blaze through your fingernail at light speed but you can literally push the soft pad of your finger against it with zero effect to your skin. I've been cutting cool rocks like this for over 25 years.

Were you a little rock stealing goblin like I was as a kid?

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Hey, thanks for the info. I've been super interested in this for a while, any ideas where would be a good place to start looking? Or what kind of saw would be a good starter? Cheers!

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Some people use tile saws but in my experience they are not good for this kind of work. There's a company, Hi-Tech that makes a six and an eight inch water cooled saw for small lapidary work. Highland Park makes saws for much larger stuff and the price reflects it. You can often find good deals on used equipment depending on your location.

Is that like cast cutting tech? Vibration cutting?

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

No this is a regular spinning saw blade.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Interesting!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This kills the coral.

2 years ago | Likes 620 Dislikes 15

No it's just sleeping

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I heard Negan did it.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nah... it's fine

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

It's a natural born killer according to the music so yeah

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The coral is already dead.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

From what I've heard, so do lots of things.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

The coral was already dead for millions of years.

2 years ago | Likes 77 Dislikes 8

Doesn't matter. Dead coral provides substrate for new coral. It should never be removed from the ocean.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 6

It wasn't removed from the ocean, it was removed from the ground.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dead inside, just like so many of us.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Dying is a behavior pattern the coral only shows when in distress

2 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

We have that in common.

I thought that was a bandsaw at first and was cringing at the liklihood of finger bite... def let out a sigh when I figured out it was a rock saw instead

2 years ago | Likes 342 Dislikes 1

I dunno it doesnt look like its rockin to me

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had the same reaction but I thought it was a water jet cutter at first

2 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

How's that make it any safer? Rocks are pretty resilient so I'd expect something that can cut through rock to be pretty damn good at cutting through flesh too.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Rock saws are essentially lubricated, focused, fine sandpaper. Yes, you can absolutely still hurt yourself with one if you had a mind to, but they are much more forgiving than a bandsaw.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The first thing that came to my mind was this ...

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I too thought it was a bansaw, i was cringin'

2 years ago | Likes 99 Dislikes 0

Is it just vibrating or why does it not tear his skin?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have no experience with rock cutting, so I don’t actually know. If k had to guess, I would assume that it’s similar to the saws used to cut open casts - it just oscillates back and forth, which is good for cutting rigid things, but not for soft flexible things like skin.

"I fucked that up in a different way" gets me every time lol
